This is just to learn how the process could work in a few years or so.

My son is very indifferent to guns for sports, but as for protection, with a one yr-old baby he seems to have postponed the idea of having a handgun.
His wife is from north. CA and one day they might try to live in s.e. OR or north. CA

Can a rifle--belonging to a TN resident-- be registered now to a family member who could legally take it years from now to the Left Coast, and Keep it, or do these states forbid this, or plan to do so?

This topic was begun as a result of the new CA laws as detachable mags are used by my Saigas and the AK derivatives...in case he were to inherit one of them in the next few years (or as a gift) and wanted to keep it.

Is your idea that you create a TN trust, make yourself, your son, and your daughter-in-law trustees, and transfer the firearm(s) to the trust in compliance with TN laws? Thereby allowing any of you to possess the firearm(s) without another transfer taking place?

I don't know the intricacies of that, but California requires some level of paperwork when a resident inports a firearm. That has changed from when I lived there so I won't try to address the details of current law, but even if the trust allowed the son/trustee to take possession of the gun(s) without creating an unlicensed inter-state transfer in violation of federal law, I think California would still require the gun(s) be registered upon importation, effectively doing the same as an FFL transfer whether or not it actually goes through an FFL in that case.

I don’t believe that they could be brought into CA by a current CA resident, even as a member of a trust. A person moving onto the state can bring their CA legal guns into the state and register them, but I don’t think a current resident can. The Calguns.net (The link in easy’s post) is a good place to get more accurate & current information.

We're still sorting out the details of the new law - no regulations out yet.

But the way to bet is that a rifle that does not meet the 'fixed magazine' definition, as is effective in 2017, may not be imported into CA after Dec 31, 2016.

The trust thing is outside my competence; the things I have read do not create optimism. But in general, a CA resident may not inherit a thing CA calls an 'assault weapon' and keep it in CA. That's Penal Code 30915.

Ed Ames:

I know nothing about any 'gun trust', what they consist of, and don't even know how to phrase the correct question, or which terminology to include etc.

Being totally ignorant of what they are, it's easy to forget that Wikipedia might have basic info about the concept-whether accurate or not.

Thanks for all of the replies.

You will be subject to state law at the time the gun is transferred to that state. No telling what those will be at some time in the future.

Presently Oregon does not have any magazine or assault weapon bans.

Thanks guys/gals. My son's new wife expressed an interest in S. E. Oregon (as a long-term desire), but all of her relatives are about an hour west of Yosemite CA.

When their baby is older my son could develop an interest, especially if he then lives in a state Next to CA, where ARs might still be legal. He seems to somewhat enjoy shooting, but never got much exposure- or 'the bug'.

I'm tempted to buy my First extra AR lower, as a later gift for him (while they are in TN), just in case.
