In the past I have used Hornday One Shot for lubing cases. After I ran out, someone suggested making home made case lube using a mixture of lanolin and 99% isopropyl alcohol. I made some using a 10:1 ratio of alcohol to lanolin. I've noticed that after the alcohol dries, it leaves the cases a little sticky to the touch. I've noticed powder sticking to the cases as well as other particles of who knows what (dust, dirt maybe). My dies also got really gunked up and I had to clean them. I am thinking of switching back to One Shot or Dillon's case lube. I was looking at a picture of Dillon's and it looks just like my mixture of lanolin and alcohol. It's also twice as much as One Shot. Is Dillon's just lanolin and alcohol? Sure looks like it. People seem to like it though.

ANy thoughts or suggstions

I have used both and found similar results. The Dillon spray (not homemade) left a residue that I didn't care for and after wet cleaning, I just didn't care for the results as much as I did with the Hornady spray. YMMV

I got a bottle of the Dillon lube free in some horse trading. It sat on my bench for a long time before I ever tried it. But when I finally started, I couldn't stop. 2 or 3 spritz into a coffee can with pistol brass, let it sit for 24 hours, and you're good to go.

In higher doses it can leave a thick film, but I like that for preserving dies and other steel parts that are starting to rust. Very useful stuff to have around.

Just saying.

I currently use and like the Dillon lube. I use a gallon ZipLoc bag, shake the lube for 30 seconds or so, give is about 3 pumps, shake and roll the cases around, dump them out and go to sizing after the alcohol evaporates. I have had a few stuck cases with the Oneshot even though I followed the directions.

I use a ziplock bag, spray a little in and shake. A little goes a long way, and make sure to give the alcohol time to evaporate. I don't feel the need to clean it off after sizing as I do other lubes.

Side note: Frankford lube to me is exactly the same as the Dillon and usually less $.
I like it and the Dillon

Maybe thin down your homemade a bit, this is a rare case where more alcohol might be the correct answer:)

I have had far better results with Dillon’s use vs One Shot. Hornady’s unique case lube is a lot better than One Shot but it’s not a spray.

Mark Twain once observed, "Too much of anything is bad, but too much whiskey is just enough.":)

I've used all three, Hornady's aerosol One Shot, Dillon's alcohol/lanolin case lubricant, and home brew alcohol/lanolin mix. I have had similar good results with both the Dillon and my own lubricant mixes but could not get the Hornady lubricant to work with rifle cases.

I am not sure what my alcohol:lanolin ratio is as I mix a bit too much lanolin in the bottle of alcohol and vigorously shake. I let the excess lanolin that does not "dissolve" with the alcohol settle for a day or two and then decant the liquid on top.

The alcohol does have to have a chance to dry and I do tumble clean, usually dry tumbling, my cases lubed with the lanolin after sizing.

I have been using 90% isopropyl alcohol (90% alcohol, 10% water). I understand 70% can be problematic and 99% would be the best.

I've used these lubricants mostly on 223 Rem and 204 Ruger size cases and smaller and handgun cases. I have used them a little on larger cases but I do not specifically remember the results. I do not have any negative feelings on using the alcohol/lanolin lubricant on them though.

Outside of using it on pistol cases Ive never had much luck with One Shot. I'll take a pass on it for reloading rifle...
Thats all i got :)

I run 16-1 iso/lanolin mix. Have yet to stick a rifle case. And yes, you do have to tumble iso/lano case lube off.

For pistol I use OneShot as I dont have to tumble that off.

Or try to wash it off down a sink drain. It will reconstitute as a paste somewhere in the waste system. You can figure out how I know this.

Too many horror stories about One-Shot for me to trust it. I also dislike the mess lanolin leaves. I use Pam, it comes off easy and works well for me, plus it’s cheap and available everywhere. I usually just raid the kitchen for a partial can when my can runs out. Don’t tell my wife.

I've never had any issues with One Shot but I agree with you about lanolin being messy. It lubes the cases but it also causes stuff to stick to the cases.

I use OneShot. It works well. No need to clean it off...
...except that powder will stick to the mouth of the case, just inside the neck. More than likely it causes harm only to my brain.
I was enjoying not cleaning the cases again, but I may have to reinvestigate it.

I was thinking of trying my own lanolin spray. I have and extreme dislike of plumbing, though and would not like to experience any of that to try something new, just for fun.

Lotsa folks here don't like One-Shot.
Seems like lotsa stuck cases when using One-Shot.

I don't know what I'm doing right, but knock on wood -
I haven't stuck a case in more than 5 years.

I use either One-Shot or home-made.

Whatever you do, don't try to clean lanolin lubed cases by wet tumbling with pins

Without trying it to find out why I will just ask and take your word for it.
Bad, what happens?

I added dry tumble Flitz to a wet batch one time thinking it might help, cases came out covered with grey slime, pins covered with grey slime, grey slime on the inside of the drum very bad idea.
Lots of 409 to clean up the mess.

The lanolin doesn't break up with Dawn (most common) or most stuff normally used. The lanolin redistributes over the cases and pins (the worst) after having picked some nastiness from the rubber.

I didn't do it but saw the results of a couple of folks who did.

If all you have is a wet tumbler, you want to put the cases in with just water and Woolite

Thanks for the info,
I have a dry tumbler as well, was just curious after my grey slime Flitz result. (which took a couple hours to clean up).
That one wasn't a whole lot of fun so I would prefer not to recreate the same results a different way.:)
