just reading on the NRA site, it says a permit is required to ccw and to purchase a handgun In Nebraska. I may be moving there in a few months for work, is there any problem bringing the handguns I already own with me? Do I need to get some sort of permit for the handguns I already own? Any other gun related laws I should be aware of? Any info or clarification from those who live there is appreciated.

Based on my understanding, just need a permit if i buy a new handgun once i get there. Ill need to apply for a new ccw permit to carry, but it sounds like nebraska is gun friendly. I read no MGs, but i cant afford NFA stuff anyways.

Nebraska requires a CCW permit to carry within the state. Some states have reciprocity and information about what states have reciprocity are on the Nebraska State Patrol's webpage as they manage the CCW stuff.

Purchasing handguns (or blank AR15 lowers) requires a Handgun Purchasers Permit. I believe this is statute limited to $5, might not be, I can't remember. I know where I'm at, it's $5. Can be obtained at the local Sheriff's department or police department wherever you are going. Usually takes 1-3 days to get but is just a background check. Long arms don't require a Handgun Purchasers Permit, but it goes a lot quicker if you have one. Last time I purchased a long gun before becoming a LEO, the guy behind the counter at Cabela's groaned that I didn't have one, but the sale went fine without it.

Only other firearm restrictions in the state that I'm aware of pertaining to purchase/ownership, etc, is that Omaha has a registration for handguns. Lincoln shouldn't, and the rest of the state doesn't.

There are some laws surrounding carrying of firearms in the vehicle if they are loaded but a CCW permit pretty much eliminates all but the carrying of loaded shotguns in the cab of a vehicle.

Welcome to the Good Life State... I hope that wherever you are going in state, you are aware that come college football season, Lincoln's downtown area and most of the interstate headed to Lincoln (or out of after the game) are going to be PACKED. This state is CRAZY about the Cornhuskers, doubly so now that Scott Frost has come home. The vast majority of LEO's are pretty open minded about firearms as the state is very pro 2A... the State Patrol, Omaha PD and Lincoln PD are probably going to be the three LEO organizations to care most about the minutia about the firearms laws in vehicles, etc... the rest of us are pretty laid back about it! :)

Kansas does not have any of those silly gun laws.

Open carry, conceal carry without a permit, no waiting period, no government permission from the State. very few restrictions on carrying in government buildings and most business allow conceal and open carry. The State does issue conceal carry permits which gives you the advantage to c.c. out-of-state (we travel to Oklahoma and Texas) although I think the fees are to high. The C.C. License is convenient when buying a gun. I just put it down on the counter with my plastic credit card which makes the seller happy because they don't have to call it in for the FBI "Instant Check".

Just saying that you might find Kansas more agreeable that Nebraska when it comes to guns.

Thanks for the info guys. I can read the info on websites, but it is always good to hear the perspective of someone living there. The job is in the Omaha, NE area, so that pretty much limits me to Nebraska or Iowa. Not looking to buy any new guns at the moment, just taking what I have with me.

No issues bringing your existing collection of handguns. As was stated, a handgun purchase permit can be had from the Sheriff for 5 bucks. Basically, that permit allows the FFL to skip the NICS. If you are coming to work in the Omaha area, recommend living in Sarpy county instead of Douglas County (Omaha) as you don't need to register your handguns.

Douglas County is ok. It's the City of Omaha that requires registration of every handgun brought within city limits no matter how briefly. The city attorney says he won't prosecute someone traveling through with a handgun in the trunk. However, that's not how the ordinance reads.

I strongly recommend getting a state concealed handgun permit (CHP). It greatly simplifies acquisition, possession and transportation of handguns. Holders are exempt from Omaha's registration ordinance. (The state had to amend the CHP law to make it clear that no subordinate government had authority over CHP holders.) According to a state supreme court decision last year, to transport a handgun in a vehicle, you need to put it in the trunk or, if you have a van, SUV or hatchback, inside a locked container. Once you have a CHP, it doesn't matter where you carry the gun. Chris Zeeb ([email protected]) was my CHP instructor. I chose him on the basis of strong recommendations on the state firearms organization (www.nebraskafirearms.org).

If I end up taking the job in Omaha, getting a chp will be one of the first things I do once officially becoming a resident.

Any good ranges or clubs in the Omaha area that take new members?

I go to Inner10. They don't have the attitude that some ranges/stores can get. Clean and we'll lit as well.

One thing to be aware of is that the whole state is open carry except for Douglas county/Omaha city limits and the township of Blair. The city takes up almost the whole county so I play by Omaha rules in the county just to be sure.

If you can live in Sarpy county it will make things much simpler. Council Bluffs is an option and lately Iowa has been getting better in regards to 2A, not sure about the city itself though.

As a whole the attitude around here is friendly towards firearms considering the size of population. Know plenty of people that aren't happy about handguns/"assault weapons" but have yet to meet someone that takes issue to hunting so there is hope. Also know just as many who wouldn't surprise me if they had "shall not be infringed" tattooed somewhere.

Plus 1 on Inner 10. I go there, too. The place is new, clean and well ventilated. Their target transport system is sophisticated.

Other indoor ranges in the urban area are 88 Tactical (heavy on tactical training), Omaha Gun Club (a "guntry" club), Take Aim and The Bullet Hole.

Clubs with outdoor ranges between 20 and 35 miles from central Omaha are Eastern Nebraska Gun Club (biggest facility), Weeping Water Gun Club and Council Bluffs Rifle & Pistol Club. I belong to the CBR&PC. They have a match almost every weekend, from cowboy action to bench rest rifle, on their 200 yard range.

Only thing about Council Bluffs are the stoplight cameras. Not exactly a 2A related thing, but I refuse to drive through CB anymore. They don't even assess points against your license with them, just a civil fine which tells me everything I need to know about how that community is run.

There is a range in Bellevue now isn't there? It's been about 5 years since I lived in Omaha (job drug me out west of Lincoln) but I thought I heard something about a range opening up in Bellevue as well.

Another option for gun clubs is the Southwest Iowa Gun Club. Outdoor ranges (only 200 yards on the rifle side, up to 50 at the pistol side), dirt cheap to join, lots of clay shooting (where the bulk of their membership is at) if you like shooting trap and very friendly group when it comes to outsiders. Only thing I didn't care for was they wanted folks to be at meetings, join a group and take turns manning the range (upside, you get sent to NRA RSO school) on the sundays they are open. They do a decent number of competition shoots too but I never had the time to get involved out there beyond just showing up and shooting my targets. The RSO's generally frowned when I wanted to do rifle in the winter time since they have a manned rifle/handgun range, but once they saw me shoot a couple of times and knew I wasn't going to do anything stupid, they sat in their trucks and let me freeze! :D Not quite "close" to Omaha, but it's not that far of a drive to get there.

There is Take Aim, Bullet Hole, 88 Tactical, Omaha Gun Club, Inner10, and one out by Waterloo. Not sure which one was open first but half of those ranges are only a few years old. Those are all the indoor ranges. If and when I shoot outdoors it is on public land or a friend's property so I'm not well versed in the outdoor ranges.

I think the traffic cams got ruled unconstitutional by the courts but I wouldn't count on me. Never had a problem with them so I don't keep up on the news regarding the cams. Wrote a letter to express my displeasure either way when I moved to the area.

Forgot to say earlier Scrap, if you do move here be sure to let me know and we will go out for a shoot and a bite to eat.
