In regards to a shotgun threaded for chokes, is it ok to shoot anything without a choke?

I have no intentions of trying to shoot field loads or buckshot like that, my main concern is slugs.

When I first shot my recently aquired hunting 12g a couple of months ago, after playing around with the three chokes that came with it on field loads and buckshot I wanted to try a couple slugs. I was unsure whether to use a choke at all and ended up shooting a couple with nothing at all. Didn't seem to mess the threads up, which is what I was worried about.

Anyhow, I understand the different styles of chokes and what they do, my question is basically whether or not you can damage the threads by shooting anything really, through the barrel without a choke.

Don't fire your shotgun without a choke in place. You will mess up the threads something fierce. For slugs, try a Cylinder or rifled choke.

Second this, you may not damage the threads with a couple shots, but you will almost certainly damage them with more. Use an I/C or no more than a Mod choke for slugs, if shooting very many check for tightness as they can unscrew themselves. "Rifled" slugs don't really spin much going down the bore, but swage themselves down to choke diameter for a snug seal so they can be safely shot through full chokes but it puts undue stress on screw in chokes tighter than Mod, fixed chokes not so much. Sabot slugs would be best shot through a rifled barrel or at least an extended rifled choke tube and can be extremely accurate, my cantilever rifled slugs barrel will shoot 3" groups at 100 yards with Rem Copper Solids.
