I have several Vepr 5.45. I want to buy an AK74 clone, a plinker if you will. Something I can shoot while saving my Veprs 5.45. I was very much surprised when I found that there seem to be no AK-74 outside of Arsenal. few years back everyone and their grandma were making AK-74: IO Inc, WaffenWerks, Century... Romanian (AIMS74), Bulgarian, Polish... Now they are all MIA. ANyone has any idea: a) What happened b) Where can I get AK74?
Thanks

...Or, shoot those Veprs...that's what they're made for.
I really like the 5.45. I have a converted Saiga I bought when they were cheap. I still have three sealed cans of 7n6, and another can about half gone.
Great cartridge.

They never were anywhere as common as the 7.62x39 rifles. Keep in mind just about all the guns were made from parts kits from de-milled military guns. A lot of 7.62 AKMs were made and used in client states. As those places updated, the old guns became fodder for our market. Government bans on parts importation and lack of supply as the guns were redistributed for local conflicts has pretty much ruined our domestic rebuilding market. So we are now left with a few US made guns of questionable quality and small supplies of relatively expensive imports. Even when we had plentiful cheap surplus 5.45 there wasn't a lot of variety or volume of rifles available.

Glade I bought the Veprs I did in .223 . There weren't many of them, Getting decent mags was a bit of a hassle but once you did you were golden. Those Veprs are in Washington State now and were never "converted" to the military style. They were best little 5.56 Carbines IMHO much faster handling than a pistol grip in many situations, so for burning alot of the crappiest steel ammo available in .223/5.56 they are "rent a gun" proof ! Seriously for taking people out and letting them enjoy a semi AK experience . I have a .22LR rifle that "looks like an AK47 " if you can't live without the AK image . Love those VEPRs:)

Russia is the only country making em and that’s banned. With little to no chance of that ban being lifted; Bulgaria stopped making them because no one bought them.

I sold the ones I had after the cheap ammo went the way of the dodo.

The non-corosive Wolf 5.45x39 is still cost competitive with the cheapest 5.56, nowhere near as cheap as the corrosive surplus 5.45 used to be but then its not corrosive. Both the corrosive surplus and Wolf 5.45 is solid 2 moa ammo in my S&W 5.45 AR upper. The AK wins on cleaning ease after shooting corrosive ammo. I also have a 5.45 converted Saiga, we had lots of fun burning up the cheap corrosive surplus ammo before bump stocks were banned. Say what you will, but nobody who used it left without an ear to ear grin, no water filled plastic bottle was safe. :)
