Just finished tryouts with an Iver Johnson .32 that hasn't spoken in probably 100 years... 50 for sure as I've owned it that long and shot with it for the first time just yesterday.

6.4 gr. FFFg in Starline brass with CCI small pistols... 30% ftf's that needed a 2nd strike to make noise.

A new hammer spring is not an option. Can you point me to a primer with a softer cup than the CCI's?

Are you bottoming your primers when seating , you should feel them bottom . ftf can happen if primers are flush with base . Something to check . I've been using both CCI and Federal , both fire 100% . Uniforming your primer pockets may be something to look into .

This is a very old gun, likely with original and very hard to find springs. Normally I would tend to agree that the ammo could be a problem, but I think in this case finding a different primer as the OP is asking might be a better solution.

I understand you are loading BP, but to help isolate the problem, would factory ammo be an option?

I have a walther model 8 that likes soft primers....25acp in my case....talk about itty bitty stuff to work with.

Try winchester they worked in mine.

OK thanks everyone. I could try a factory load and if someone made a cowboy or other reduced load I'd be all for that. But this is a BP top-break and I'd rather not risk overstressing the latch. CW, the primers were bottomed and it's brand new brass.

Go to remove link in Post #9 for black powder factory ammo.
