Has anyone tried such a thing from a pistol? I have wondered how useful a smoothbore Plains Pistol (28 ga) would be for small game (using a screw-in full choke), and then wondered how well a buck n ball load might work on hogs if I ever had to track one.

I’m thinking over powder card followed by lubed was, a few buck, and a patched .535” ball. From a cylinder bore I’m wondering if the spread would even be much at say 10 yds. No doubt the velocity would likely be low that the pellets didn’t deform much giving good penetration (how much for puny .30 to .32 cal ball in a pig?).

Well first, you don't want to be shooting a solid round ball, close to bore size, from a choked bore. I know you're only talking about shot vs. small game, but I'm making it clear to anybody else who views the thread. ;)
Sure, a choked barrel would put more pellets into your pattern father out.:D
IF you jug choked the barrel, then you could put a ball into the same barrel and not worry if you used a smooth bore pistol.

I think you'd do better by using more than one ball if you encounter a wounded hog, so I'd suggest you place a second, patched round ball on top of the first. Make sure they are seated against each other and against the powder. Buckshot would give too much chance to spread and miss and if you got into a European boar instead of an American feral hog, you're going to need the mass of both projectiles, I betcha.

I’d much prefer to have the jug choke, but I haven’t seen anyone do it to a barrel under 20 ga.
