In order to complete my utter and absolute hypocrisy, I am getting back into 6.8 SPC. In so far as building an upper goes.
If you are currently shooting 6.8 SPC which ammo or components are you liking?
What has been your experience lately with the cartridge?

Its been a few years since I looked into this.

I currently run 120 Hornady SST factory ammo in my 6.8 SPC. I’m about to start building an 11.5” upper to complete an SBR in 6.8 SPC. I see no reason to change ammo. Pigs, deer, coyotes, raccoons and beavers have all met swift ends from the barrel of my 6.8.

My experience is a little different. I bought a 6.8 SPC barrel for a TC Contender carbine rifle last year. I worked up some loads using the Hornady 120gr SST and H322 powder and accuracy was abysmal. I was so discouraged, I put it away last fall and never hunted with it and I still haven't messed with it. I'm not sure if it was the barrel, the bullet, the powder, or a combination of those factors. But so far I have not been impressed.

That’s crazy. My AR is putting five rounds into a one inch circle at a hundred yards. That’s running a Wilson Combat fluted Recon weight barrel and a 4X scope. What twist rate is that Contender barrel?

It's a 1:10 twist.

It's a 1:10 twist.
Doing some looking and it seems as though the Contenders have a really long throat on the 6.8 barrels and have caused issues for a lot of folks. Read about one guy whom loaded to 6.8 SPC II OAL to get his to shoot well.

115 & 120 grain I use A2200
110 grain I use H322
90 grain I use RE7
CFE BLK is another powder to try.
Factory ammo-- Fed 90 grain Gold dots are very accurate for me.
I've got 6 firearms chambered in 6.8 SPC II, from 4 different manufacturers, most self built. All are very accurate with these loads, some extremely accurate.

120 gr. bullets 18" barrel 1:11 twist, what are you looking at for reasonable MV's

Wilson Combat Recon (18” fluted) in 6.8 SPC ll; shoots Hornady 110 V-Max into an inch or less with boring consistency (the inch is me, the rifle is capable of sub MOA). It is a very good deer round with chest shots (turns the chest cavity into mush and they drop). Again, the limitation on this rifle is the shooter.

Bison Armory specs an 18" recon or fulcrum barrel both at 1:11 twist which should be gtg at these weights and velocities.

I had a PSA 6.8 SPC II with an 18" 11 twist a while ago that I was pretty happy with. I used 110gr Accubonds and SSA cases with a warm load of AA2200 for 2,660 fps and 1.25" - 1.5" 5 shot groups. Only shot two deer with that, but the ABs worked very well, like they usually do. Sold it to get an AR-10 before realizing that they are heavier, less manuverable and don't kill deer any deader.

I'm actually coming back to mid-caliber AR-15 cartridges and building a lightweight 6.5G for medium game hunting. Thought about just getting another 6.8, but decided to try something a bit different (but functionally very similar).

So I think we are going to try some PRI mags, internet searches tend to show these are the best. Would you concur?
Also we R thinking of going with the Hornady 120 SST and loading with AA220. Does that sound like a plan?

Just some other tertiary thoughts/information.

Sellier and Beloit cases have the most internal capacity as far as I know which helps in loads. I bought s&B ammo for its brass and am still shooting it up. Need to buy some more before there’s any supply issue (panic or whatever).

The newer style ASC mags allow to load long.

My PRI waffle mag worked quite well, I'm planning on seeing if it will feed Grendel reliably. I've also heard that the newer 6.8 asc mags are pretty good and allow you to load long. There's a thread on AR15.com about an unnamed company that is planning to start production of lowers that fit the Jordanian contract 6.8 Pmags, along with some new similarly sized metal mags that would allow COALs up to 2.38". An AR-12 sized platform like that could open up some interesting options for the larger AR-15 cartridges like the 6.8, 6.5, .22 Nos, 6mm Predator, etc.

can you link to the "newer" asc mags. I have no idea how to tell the old from the new. these are stainless steel?

I'd be cautious buying ASC mags.I returned 5 15 round that didn't work they sent back 5 replacements that didn't work any better. This was about 9 months ago.I have C Products and PRI that work fine.

I have a Ruger Mini 6.8. I use Remington Factory Ammo. A few years ago at the factory they had a employee sale on 6.8 ammo. A friend purchased a couple cases for me at blow out pricing. I reload in the caliber with AA2230, but with all the inexpensive ammo, it doesn't always make sense.
