I was originally looking to get the Smith & Wesson 460 xvr but now I'm also very interested in the bfr 460

but if it does not shoot 454 Casull or 45 Colt like the other one then I will not since I already own to 454 Casull s.

Also any other comparisons are experienced with the bfr 460 and comparisons between it and the Smith & Wesson 460 xvr?

I'd expect accuracy to suffer when the bullets clear the case mouth before they enter the throat.

Loading reduced power loads in full-length brass is probably a better option.

I too, have my reservations about accuracy if shooting 45C and 454 in the 460. After much reading and from advice from various forum members from various forums, I've decided against it.

This is what I do:

That's a long way for that bullet to go for a 45 colt to get tot he forcing cone...and still a bit of a ways for a 454.

A 460 BFR is on my "to-do" list and I'll be honest when I say I have no plans on running any 45 colt or 454 through it.

I'd rather have a designated 45 colt revolver and with 460 as an option, I really wouldn't have a need to dive into 454.

The cylinder on a 460 is long, and the jump that a 45 Colt or 454 needs to make in the cylinder causes accuracy to suffer.

The other thing about shooting .45 colt and .454 outta a .460, is that they print(POI) so differently from POA than legitimate .460 ammo. Especially once you get to shooting at legitimate .460 distance. So you either sight in and adjust your sights every time you change ammo, or you learn to use Kentucky windage. Either way, you waste ammo and forfeit what the .460 is known for....consistent accuracy. You say you already have .454 platforms you can shoot .45 Colt outta. Why worry about what you can shoot from a .460. You either want a .460 platform to shoot .460 ammo, or you don't. If you want to shoot the lesser calibers, stick with what you already have.

Thanks guys
I know 454 and 45 are certainly not ideal to shoot in the 460 I just wanted to make sure that I would have that option in the bfr just like I would in the 460xvr since I already own 3 454 Casulls

So what I understand is you can shoot it safely and certainly kill something 30 yards in front of you with 454 or 45 in the 460 but just not to expect great accuracy is that correct?
Also Max and anyone else with experience what would you get between the bfr or the xvr and why)I changed the preferred double action but I can live without it if I'm going to get more accuracy and overall reliability and durability out of a single action bfr for example I own both a Super Redhawk and a Freedom Arms model 83 in 454
Plus shooting single action with the bfr may slow me down just enough to save me a bunch of money on ammo LOL

Exactamundo.

I don’t anyone shooting their .460 XVRs double-action, so I don’t think it’s a necessary feature for a revolver if this caliber.
You know I once decided to see if I could actually use my 460 magnum to stop a bear, or a moose, or a Buick, and I loaded up a cylinder full of 325 gr hard cast HSM ammo to put myself to the test.

I unloaded all 5 rounds in DA at a target as quickly as I could with reasonable accuracy, and when I had finished the range was completely silent. The other three shooters there were all staring at me.

"Sorry!"

I actually surprised myself at how well I'd done, but my hand was sore and I felt like I'd been hit in the face repeatedly with a wet towel. Stupid muzzle break...……...

LOL...that got an actual laugh out of me.

There's a vid of Jerry Mic rapid firing a short barrel 500 S&W...it looks flipping miserable.
I've seen that video. Did you notice how he held the gun? Go back and look at his right thumb if you didn't notice.

I did. He took that first 3 shot cluster then stopped for a second and mentioned he had to make an adjustment. Rolled that R-hand thumb-meat out of the way on that 5-shot. Interesting move...I know those S&W revolvers are some hand smackers. I had a 4" 629 that with wood grips, literally bruised my R hand on the back thumb joint...really sucks.

I have a reduced load for the 460 S&W Mag that shoots a 250 SWC cast bullet in a 460 Mag case at about 1000-1100 fps. It's a great plinking load and a reasonable cost round to get familiar with the weight and characteristics of my 460 XVR revolver.

If I plan to go hunting with the gun, I'll shoot some full power ammunition to adjust the sights and get familiar with the recoil.

This is how I see it...it's like shooting 44Spcl out of my 629. It shoots ~3" high vs. 44Mags. Yes, it's accurate, but I must compensate by adjusting my POA. It's a minor inconvenience, but I do it. I would expect the same result when shooting 454 out of the 460. Shooting 45C out of the 460...well that's a horse of a different color.

BTW, the 460V comes with a complete second rear sight that can be swapped out to compensate for the bullet rise/drop of lighter or heavier loads. Have any of you ever swapped out the rear sight on a modern Smith? Yeah right, like I'd be doing that at the range...NOT!

This is a great approach, cfullgraf. I use my 460 downloads for warmups before I shoot the heavies.

I have pretty much decided to get the bfr 460 I like that barrel length a lot and yes a single action does seem reasonable in this caliber.
Plus even a brand new one is cheaper than a used 460 v and is $100 cheaper then a newu 460xvr
The hundred dollar difference between the bfr 460 and the 460 xvr it's not enough to decide the difference between those two so I'm still a little on the fence.
The best price I found so far on a bfr new is about $975
I cannot seem to find any used ones anywhere. Why?

They probably don't sell quite as many, and the people that do buy them, tend to keep them.

^^^I agree. It seems the infatuation with the really big bores like the .460 and .500 mags has dropped off a bit from those that just want to impress their friends at the range. The demand has changed to those that are looking for a good deer hunting revolver platform. Many folks have come to realize also that the only way most folks can afford to feed them regularly and/or find the ammo they need, is to reload. This is similar to the infatuation on Model 29s, because of the Dirty Harry movies. same thing. Many folks didn't realize how much recoil and noise were produced, nor did they expect ammo to be as expensive as it was, even back then. For those without a real need or desire, the new wore off quickly.

Again, whether the X-Frame or the BFR, the .460 is not for everyone. While the bigger X-Frames can make it more pleasant to shoot at the range, the concussion and muzzle blast will still make your ears bleed if you do not wear appropriate protection. Factory ammo, even the cheapest is over a buck and a half a pop and most legitimate hunting ammo is about 2-3 times that. Even reloading it is expensive. While there are a lot of haters out there, IMHO, there are few handgun calibers that are more perfect than a .460 for a primary weapon for hunting deer. That, even tho I still hunt deer with .357s and .44 too. The accuracy they produce out to 100 yards and beyond and the terminal performance with appropriate bullets is just amazing for a straight-walled handgun caliber.

Exactly. I'm an odd duck as I don't hunt but I'm a reloading fanatic and love bench shooting handguns.

If you don't reload and if you're looking for a range blaster, I've told many people to stop with 44 magnum. I've shot a S&W 500 once and it was a miserable experience that I'd rather not repeat. It was a S&W X-Frame and I'll honestly say that I'm not a fan of the way S&W geometry handles hard recoil. I have a 44 Super Redhawk for that reason, it just handles the hot stuff so much better (in my opinion). The only reason why I'm now considering such a thing as a 460 is because I reload and can custom make loads to suit my taste and Magnum Research fixed some geometry issues with the new Bisley grip BFR.

Thanks guys
