For a few oddball reasons I'm looking to make up a few rear sights for some rifles I have on hand. I'm wondering if any of you have done something like this and might have a few hints on best methods. Fancy joints within reason are not out of the question since I've made my own cutters and I'm not above the idea of custom grinding files to trim things with files that have safe edges and such. I've also got a pretty good home shop of machine tools. So suggest away.
And before you suggest it, I've looked around and bought a couple of used sights for a couple of other rifles but still need to make a few oddball custom ones for some specific reasons. And around these parts they are still oddly expensive.
If you're wondering I'm a big vintage "boy's rifle" fan with around ten of them now. But my old guy eyes cannot deal with the often tiny "v" notches and fixed pistol style sights. But I do like shooting low power ammo through them. Also I'm looking to make some new sights for my cowboy action rifles instead of using the buckhorn sights... which I hate... even modified I still hate them....
