Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

I’ll be 2 hours behind you headed to the Midwest Finale in Ottawa, KS in the morning - have to leave at 5a Central to hit the range on time... unfortunately charging cases right now, fate forbid I ever let my match ammo get more than 12 hours old before the first round of the day...

fate forbid I ever let my match ammo get more than 12 hours old before the first round of the day...

Same issue here. Seems like an easy thing to fix, just load my match ammo earlier, but there must be something more fundamentally wrong with me because I just can’t do it.

Good shooting!

We set up a course at our property, 50ft between spots, a wire spool to shoot sitting, a level spot for prone and a 6x6 post with dowels for standing, is there anything else "simple" we can do for a fun day shoot/BBQ.

All kinds of fun options for stuff to shoot off of. Rocks, posts, fences, steps, tires, tank traps, search PRS on utube and you'll see lots of cool stuff.

Our thoughts were shoot at each station at 100, 200 and 300yrds then change stations and repeat, time will be kept to try and improve. Usually 4 or 5 families with about a dozen shooters. We are thinking about adding 6" steel to our 4" steel targets just to help new shooters and us old farts that are out of shape

This was the season finale for one day matches, was set up to be tough, and it was, a lot of moving, a lot, small targets, back and forth between yardages, multiple yardages. Top shooter was 90, second was in our squad at 85. I had a tough day, too slow, tough time with switchy lying :D winds..... but seriously, it would switch directios on you midway through a stage, or hold left to right for four shooters and then switch on someone walking up expecting the same, or just die out sometimes. I blanked one stage because my buddy Jeff put me on the wrong torso target, RO waslike "check your dope!" I'm like, I have! I stopped after the first spot on the barracade with two misses and checked it, yep, 3.2 Mils, move, two more misses, move, two more...... So, I get done and Jeff comes to me all apologetic about it's his fault, I'm like, how is it your fault? *Sigh* He lucked out I went before him, or he would have done it. It should have been an easy stage (PS skills tiebreaker stage), and that would have had me in the mid/high 40s, bad, but not as bad as being in the high 30s. Like I said, a tough day for me. A great day where my arch nemesis did not visit though, I'll take it, a really great time. :)

This young man took 2nd place.

Oh yea, for a positive. The last stage for our squad was high prone, small plate at 865, LARGE plate at 1162, smaller plate at 865, LARGE plate at 1162, even smaller plate at 865, back to 1162, small plate at 865.........I went 8 for 10, never missed at 1162, so that felt good. A couple of guys had a two on that stage, maybe I got lucky with the wind. :)

I like the covered area, how far are your targets? What % of hits? Do you get extra points for smaller targets? We've been looking at the Savage, Bergera and Howa actions but they are not chambered in something we want. I like my Howa 1500s over my 700s and Savage 110 but those are not target rifles

Ok @Varminterror and @GoldieMI how about some pics. :)

I set out today intent on taking a ton of pics.... I took ONE shot of the first prop, and one shot of the range banner beside it... which is dumb, because I run my calculator on my phone, so it’s IN MY HAND every stage, not to mention my wife and I have a photography business...

I had a frustrating day - we also had super gross winds, not high wind, just switchy-twitchy tailwinds and terrain whips... maybe in the worst way, I was relatively consistent today... consistently mediocre... only one bad stage where I only made 4 impacts, but which also troubled EVERYONE except the first squad (which included the top shooters by design), who fired it as their first stage in the morning, before the wind picked up.

I did get ONE mildly intriguing shot, confirming speed before the match brief, I got a shot of my MagnetoSpeed computer displaying my 12ES and 3.8SD. Hard to mess up a Dasher shooting 105 Hybrids over Varget.

I suck with Photos..more fun to shoot than to take pics
Qualifier today 200 Prone (2 shots in 22 seconds after a 50 yard jog), 150 yards from bench (2 shots in 12 seconds), 100 yard prone (3 headshots in 20 seconds), 75 seated (3 shots in 25 seconds with a dummy round loaded to make a clear jam error), 50 kneeling (3 shots in 12 seconds includes mag change), 25 offhand (3 headshots in 12 seconds) and 7 yards (2 headshots from rifle, than transition to pistol for 2 body shots in 8 seconds)
patrol rifles with LVPO (1-4x or 1-6x) - basically AR15s with lights and 1x4x24mm optics only...no bipods no bags

Man that's a nice set up.
index.php

300 yards - with 8 electronic shot markers available on the target frames that hang over the beams. It’s a nice setup to be honest. It’s my tuning club (1 hour away) instead of my home club (10 minutes away) that only has 100 yard setup

looks like my load at 29.8 grains of Varget with BR7.5s in Alpha Brass/105 Hybrds
based on velocity numbers and SD

Lapua brass, 105 Hybrids, 30.0grn Varget, and BR4’s. Slower than I could be, but it shoots great - when I want speed, I grab my 6 Creed instead.

Admittedly, after reading the course of fire, I kinda wish I would have taken my 6 creed. The match was relatively short, and had low mph targets, but we had a switchy twitchy tail wind for many of the stages... 3163fps makes targets a lot bigger than 2776fps.

Got my rifle screwed together last week, scope mounted and out to the range on Sunday.

Started the initial load work, and I'm getting a bit more velocity than I was expecting.

23" barrel, 112gr MatchBurners, 0.070 off jammed, StaBall, Hornady cases,CCI 450s, 80 deg.
38.2 - 2,847 fps
38.5 - 2,845 fps
38.8 - 2,841 fps
39.1 - 2,879 fps
39.4 - 2,947 fps
39.7 - 2,948 fps
40.0 - 2,992 fps
40.3 - 3,011 fps

The significant velocity shift between 38.8 and 39.4 was attended by a noticeable POI shift up at 200 yds. Not my best day of shooting, but I'm going to load up 5 each 30, 60 and 90 thou off the lands for 38.6gr and 39.5gr and see how it does at 300 yds.

got my winter projects starting to get ready to go...Dasher needs a new barrel and a backup...6.5x284 needs a barrel or converted to another 6.5 offering...

I got out to the range and tried 38.6gr and 39.5gr of StaBall with 112gr Match Burners seated 30, 60 and 90 thou off the lands. I guess I'll take 38.6 at 30 and 90 thou off, and 39.5 at 60 thou off out further to see how the hold up. I usually find winners and losers with seating depth tests, but I was surprised at how far out some of the flyers were in the loser groups.

I checked to make sure that my scope and action screws were tight. I guess the problem could well be me or my bipod technique, although I didn't feel any real bad shots (except for the one I marked, I was pretty sure I shanked that one right away) and I've never had an issue pulling my other rifles off nearly 2 moa.

I'd certainly be interested in hearing any interpretations of those targets or tips for figuring out the strange behavior.

Why such a large difference in charge weights? Why not work up a ladder (?) of all the same jump and see where the small numbers are, then play with seating depth. For what it is worth, I'm not playing with seating depth, and am not adjusting it as the barrel wears, still shooting under =<.5 if me or the wind doesn't mess it up, but I am looking for flat first, small groups second.
