What did you shoot today?

Shot my 2nd GSSF indoor match today, did worse. Was hoping to get a 500 but seems I shoot better without practicing. If those 2 hadn't been out I should have matched my last score. At least I'm qualified to win a free gun or get an award. I can do another match next month but I'd have to leave work early 20230527_203858.jpg

Range outing with my 7mm PRC build. Details here.

Was sick all last week with a little congestion; today, the Brazilian "Imbel" SAR-4800. Despite the heavy trigger (tight-yet smooth) -- fun !

My first FAL was acquired last winter at age 67o_O. Why couldn't I have been more curious about these in my early 50s, when the gun bug First bit ?

Had to first go thru Mosin, SKS, Mini 14, Lee-Enfield etc phases.......:(

Hi...
My son and I spent a couple hours at the gun club today.
Mostly shooting rifles at 100 and 200 yards wth a couple of big bore revolvers added in.
I shot a couple magazines full of .223 through my AR. Easy hits on steel at 100 yards, so I switched to the 200yd targets with zero misses on the steel plates.
Then I shot around 10 rounds each out of my 7x57 Mauser bolt action military rifle snd my SMLE .303British with decent results at 100yds...four hits out of five rounds. Results at 200yds were poor...one hit on steel with the .303. I am partly blaming my 68 year old eyes and hard to focus on iron sights...but mostly just poor marksmanship on my part.
I was able to consistently hit steel at 100yds with near book max Ruger only type loads using H110 and 250gr HP/XTPs with my .45Colt Ruger Super BlackHawk Hunter with a red dot scope. I did miss the steel plate with one shot out of five at 200yds, but 4 out of 5 isn't too bad for a old man.
Also shot my Dan Wesson .44Mag with near book max Ruger only type loads using H110 and 240 and 300gr HP/HTPs at 100 and 200yds with open sights. Couple of misses on steel at 100 yds with both loads but four hits with each load. Results were not so good at 200yds only one hit with the 240gr load. Really pushing an old guy's eyesight at that range with iron sights. More practice is obviously called for...this was the first revolver shooting at those ranges this shooting season.
I shot five rounds of the 240gr load at 100yds with my Marlin lever action rifle...hit steel all five shots and called it a day.

Memorial Day Surplus Shoot.
1942 Remington 1903.
1942 Remington 1903A3.
1943 Springfield Garand.
M1 Saginaw with a 1944 Underwood bbl.
Eddystone 1917.

The M1 Garand Op rod popped out on the 6th round of the second clip. 1st time that has happened. 1970's Greek HXP was the ammo. Other than that everything ran flawless as usual.

20230529_152347.jpg Took my new to me Argentine Mauser out to see if it functions, also did a little breaking in of the Zastava M70. My nephew came along to shoot his Glock 43x and let him try a few more of mine. Let him shoot the Mosin M44, Henry All Weather .357 and the Henry Golden Boy. 22. Going to have adjust the sights on the Zastava and they Henry. Henry was way left at 50 yards.

Brought an old Glenfield 60 back to life. A good scrub (huge carbon ring), bolt return spring, guide rod, trigger return spring, cartridge lifter, cartridge lifter roller, buffer. (1977 mfc) One FTF due to a distorted bullet out of a 325-count box of Fed Auto-Match. Barrel shot really well after getting everything scrubbed out. Years and years of someone else's neglect. Popped a used crummy SWAT (bug buster) on it. Dug into the spare parts bin and found an old Marlin 39a rear sight for it. So, the old girl is up in the saddle again after who knows how long. Took everyone out for ice cream to celebrate, yay!

Haven't been shooting in a while. Broke in my new PSA Rock 5.7 and an aluminum frame Hi-Power I just picked up. And a $249 Sigma that was at the dealer where I picked up the Hi-Power.

Memorial day wife and I went to the range. I shot my CZ75B for the second time after getting it milled and an SRO installed. It's an adjustment but went pretty well. Wife tried it too and liked it. She mostly shot her S&W M&P and her shield.
I just received and will be installing an SRO on my CZ Tac Sport 9mm. I'll be shooting it in USPSA Limited Optics (new division) when I'm more used to the dot.

Nothing yet today but was at the range testing handloads yesterday. Took the Weatherby Vanguard in 257 Weatherby,

,checked stuff at 100 & 200 yards; and a few different varieties of 22LR in the CZ-455 at 50 yards.

Got too busy cleaning guns and resizing some 257 Weatherby brass last night to post this. Nothing like a good range trip on a summer day.

Finally! The range I belong to posted that the creek was low enough to get across with a 4x4, so the rifle range was open. The far edge of the water was flowing about 10” deep straight down the road, while the main channel flow went straight across from right to left. It was about 20” deep at the main channel part, so any vehicle that was shorter than my F350, like a Subaru or smaller AWD SUV, would have had running water above the lower door sill.

So, it was pretty much empty. Maybe 10 shooters using 75 bays. I was solo on bay 25, no one else from about bench 15 to 50 :).

IMG_1523.jpeg

Range is 109 yards. I am so rusty at rifle craft that I wasn’t expecting much, especially with a few guns/scopes that did not yet get zeroed.

I did not disappoint myself :(.

I zeroed my new-to-me Ruger No. 1 .223 with Win 55 gr and 64 gr soft points. It took several shots to get POI close to POA, but it’s pretty good. This is the best I could do with the 64 gr load, 3 shots touching and a fourth just low. Impact on these was about 1.25” right from POA. I adjusted by moving left but none of my later shots touched like these did.

IMG_1532.jpeg

With the CZ 550 in 6.5x55 shooting S&B 140 gr SP, I kept shots close, but not very great. The top shot ruined what could have been an ok set.

IMG_1534.jpeg

The Ruger 77 RSI .243 did not shoot well for me today. This constellation was shot with Federal 100 gr SP.

IMG_1536.jpeg

And this is a hand load with the Ca friendly 85 gr Barnes XBT over 37.2 gr IMR 4895. Two were ok, my third made it…meh.

IMG_1535.jpeg

I shot three types of .22 WMR through my Ruger American. It took me a bunch of shots to get this on paper, the first shots were almost 12” high/right. :what:

IMG_1530.jpeg

The Armscor load shot a bit low, but it did a little bit better than the other two.

Then I get a total fluke. I loaded four rounds into my Marlin 1895CB; a 405 gr RNFP over 30.4 gr IMR 4198 and a 450 gr coated RNFP over 40 gr IMR 3031.

With a peep sight, somehow both of the 405 gr shots went right where I wanted them . The two from the 450 gr load hit 8” lower and a bit to the right.

A couple of observations that most of you more experienced riflemen already know:

My cheekweld is not consistent. I saw movement in POI when my position wasn’t the same for every shot. I need to get scopes all set properly and I need to set up the same way every time. This is issue #1 I need to work on so I can improve.

I hate shooting rifles with prescription glasses. My glasses were driving me nuts, pressing the stock, cutting vision off and just plain getting in the way. But I am not shooting without something between my eyes and a firearm, so that is something I just have to deal with.

Recoil from shooting on the bench is not fun after a bunch of shots are fired. The 50-odd .223 were easy. The 20 or so .243 and 20 6.5x55 weren’t awful, but the kick was getting noticeable. The 1895CB from the bench was… stout. By the end, 4 shots was enough.

My lead .45/70 load was just a bit too long. It cycles in my 1895G, but not in this gun. Too bad, this load has always been accurate but I will need to alter the length to keep the 1895CB running.

I had one FTF from the Win 40 gr fmj. Two hits didn’t set it off, so it was dumped in the dud bin.

Stay safe.

Internals are totally different than an AKM (find a graphic AKM video). Enjoyed my Czech-assembled rifle today.

The VZ-58 is striker-fired, among other stark differences.

No parts interchange with any AKM - not even the mags. Should your Sig mags be expected to fit/work in a Glock?

In my Czechpoint Sporter with the reddish furniture I've kept & counted the used ammo boxes: 3,600 rds. since "nib". Zero hiccup; still waiting.:scrutiny:
