A former friend, a Jersey City MC cop had one that was about 18" long and hit a big guy with it up side the head, the guy went down to his knees looked up and said "Why did you do that?"
Carrying and using that in any blue state will get you a lot of grief.
I got this when I went to NJ a few years ago. You fill it with coins non descript.

How are they used against the body ?

Any strike above the shoulders can be fatal. Body strikes: joints, kidneys, crotch. Both slappers , and ASP batons are extremely effective. Both are illegal in my state. I carry a 1 1/8” straight grain hickory cane which hits like a wooden ball bat.
