What Type Firearm Do You Choose and Why?

A bit hamstrung here in my state as on New Year's Day, even more egregious, draconian gun laws took effect. And our legislature is now looking at foisting a permit to purchase requirement along with a one-gun a month restriction. All semi-auto centerfire rifles are now classed as "assault weapons" and therefore banned. For long guns and handguns, mag capacity restricted to 10 rounds. We got UBCs, we got ERPOs. Oh, and we have to take a class -- at our own expense --, certifying that we understand gun safety, how to secure firearms, keep them away from children, are educated on suicide prevention AND understand the state laws on deadly force AND can articulate how we would de-escalate a confrontation. This is every two years and we've gotta produce a certificate every time we purchase a firearm. Then there's that pesky 10 business day waiting period (so it's at least 14 days to pick up a firearm after purchase, usually 15 or more).

I'm pretty well set, so it looks as though my next purchases will be old Colt or S&W revolvers, filling in the niches in my lever action rifle collection, and maybe picking up another fine bolt-action hunting rifle...

I voted "revolver" as that's the most likely for what I'm seeking for my collection.

I'm not looking for anything. Indeed, I plan to do some downsizing this year.
Same here; but I just realized that once a couple guns get sold, I start finding desirable guns that I have never owned. Then begin thinking about how there is room in the safe for them. Despite my downsizing over the last few years, I still picked up two more long guns in 2023. This coming year will probably trigger another one for the "desire to acquire" list.

This MIGHT be a bucket list year. I was on my way towards a .475 Wildey Magnum a couple years ago when I totaled my car and had to reset my expectations.

I'm back on track for it, with the budget 2/3 of the way there. I COULD order it now, as the requirement is 50% down. But that's not how I roll. I have enough other financial obligations to worry about. My personal hobbies/interests are always budgeted in full before purchase so the family budget is not impacted by another bill.

Once I hit 100% on the budget funding, and I've met some other goals on the family budget, I'll order it.

Caliber: .475 Wildey Magnum
Action: SA/DA
Barrel Length: 10" (maybe 12"...I'll decide when I actually order it)
Finish: Brushed Stainless
Rib color: Gray
Front sight color: Orange
Grips: American Walnut
Logo: Wildey
Magazine: 2
Ammo: 2 boxes
Reloading: 4 pc Hornady Die Set

As ordered, this comes out to $3,325, before taxes. I didn't see anywhere on the site what the tax rate would be, but that's a simple phone call away. If I assume 6%, that's another $200.

I'll buy extra brass after I order it and reloading supplies to support.

And, of course...I'll need a holster for it. IWB, of course, just for the laugh factor.

NOW WE TALKING! what Death Wish was that on?

No plans.

I'll be honest, I'm in illinois guys. The laws they've made in the last few years, we can't buy or sell face to face anymore.

Used to be you could exchange foid info and do that.

Man , I sure miss that.

I miss the face to face meet ups and horse trading. And now, they've added an assault weapon ban and registration.

I mostly look at moving these days. Kentucky, Missouri, Indiana, who knows. It would be hard to do much worse as a gun guy.
Don’t take this personally, but and obviously already know this, you need to move to America.
I’m visiting family in Oregon for a few weeks. It’s sad to see what the Marxist have done here. I know there are other states that have similar BS going on so I’ll just be quiet.
I do feel your pain. In the early 70’s in Southern California we used to have a gun swap meet out back of one LGS. Driving up park, let the tailgate down or throw a blanket over the hood of your car. Good times.

Well my 2024 Grail gun is actually 2 guns, one I will get, and one that might take a few more years.
I do have an arrangement with a friend to buy at a reasonable price a Ruger Red Hawk 4 inch 45 LC and 45 ACP combo pistol. Don’t have a 45LC, I would pick up a Smith 25 if I could find one in 4”. But the RH looks and feels pretty sweet.
I’m a double action guy so no single actions need apply.
The second Grail gun is a 5” Smith 625 model of 1989 in 45 ACP. It would be a the top of the list except I picked up a 625 4 inch model 1989 a few years ago. Great pistol. I used to own a 5” in 91 or 92 and in a moment of stupidity it went down the road. But having the 4” puts the acquisition of the 5” a little lower on the list.

Rarely in the market for a new from under glass or off the rack gun.

Colts .22 King Cobra I handled a couple of weeks back was a rare exception where I almost dropped the cash. As I mentioned in my post then had it been a .22 mag it would have come home.

I’m always in the market locally for certain clean, well maintained older models which very infrequently pop up.

Here’s a few:

Winchester 1300 Upland with English stock.

CVA/Junkar full stocked Kentucky rifle in .45cal

CVA O/U in .50 cal

While not a gun: a Mossberg 500 .50 cal BP barrel.

Ruger 96 in .22mag or .44mag.

H&R Buffalo .38-55

AMT .22 Mag

Odd ball stuff like that.

Been there, done that. These were all made from scratch, built, not bought. Sorry about the upside down pic.

Puter is drunk again
I have a picture of yours saved of one of the rolling block pistols, and it serves as inspiration. A rolling block will be one of my first builds. Although, I may jazz it up a bit (or possibly bubba from the jump) and do some weirdness just because it’s the first.
