jmilliron,

Good lighting is more important than a good lens (although I used the sharpest Canon macro). This picture was made with a cheap 500w reflector (directed to the ceiling) and a few light bouncer cards. Post porcessing is mandatory with digital pictures.

Yeah, I'm shooting a Canon 20D w/ 17-85mm IS & a heavy tripod with mirror lockup. Believe me when I say the lens is ???? for macros. In fact, that lens was just a big waste of $500. I use my 50mm f/1.8 far more. Guess I should get an extension tube for it.

Need to try again either without the blade or with multiple exposures.

Maybe leave the knife but close the blade? Lighting is always tricky in the high-contrast shots. I'm not really even a hobbiest but I've been playing with shining a spot on the dark parts of the subject to help with balence.

Digital is nice because I don't have to worry about using up film, paying for development or keeping track of the exact technique I used to get the effect so I can consistantly reproduce it. I can just keep moving and changing lights and keep snapping picks then compare them on the PC and pick the one I like.

It's pretty much cheating compared to the good ol' film days when my photos usually weren't even worth developing. Most of my new ones aren't either ;)

Taken any great pictures lately? Let's see your recent digital camera work.
Recent? Dont have any. My most recent, below, is pretty old. It was taken before I got a G17 about a year ago.

Well, I can't hold a candle to Ichiro
And as you can see, neither can I...

Oleg's B/W pic made me think re one of Mec's, which seemed to suit a monochrome version ... to get some ''old time'' atmosphere/traditional feel.
