Several week back I grabbed up a 1916 Spanish Mauser from "thereisnospoon". It was already in the Ramline stock (the original was broken according to thereisnospoon). It was perfect for my project. I bought a M96 Mauser mount from B-Square to adapt as it is designed for small ring mausers. Looking back I could have used the Mosin Nagant scout mount from CDNN and made less modifications. I ended up drilling the rear sight leaf and using it as a platform for the mount. I also had to file the mount down approximately 1/4 inch as it was 1. too tall and 2. stepped down in width and filing down to the wider part gives it more stability. The Mosin mount would have replaced the rear sight leaf and probably wouldn't have needed any permanent modifications to the rifle. In using the rear sight leaf for a platform, I also drilled the rear of the sight and used a longer screw to secure the sight leaf instead of letting in ride the spring. The whole thing can still be reversed but I would have to buy a new rear sight leaf.

I cheated a little on the scout concept with a 2-7 power pistol scope. I like being able to "get closer" to my target at greater than 100yds. I'll be getting to the range Tuesday (I hope) to dial it in. I like this rifle and think it may be a good deer rifle for this season.

1916 .308 Mauser?

I have one of those...... was it originally a Samco Guardia Mauser? If it was, that is one heckuva transformation :what: ! Keep us posted as to how everything goes, it looks good!

Eightball,
Yes it was originally a Samco Guardia Mauser. It's an interesting rifle. Still got a couple of bugs to work out but I'm at least ready for a test run.

Marvelous!

When I first found out about the 1916 Spanish Mausers I dreamed of turning'em into a nice little scout rifle. Especially given that their reported weight with the wood stock was rather light. The piece looks nice, I admire what you've done with it. Any idea what it weighs in current trim with scope/no ammo?

1916 Samco in .308...

With the original wood stock...Kicks like a 12GA with slugs. I restored mine and parkerized it. Has the bolt characteristics of the US 1917 EddyStone, and the looks of the US 1903 (kinda). Very Accurate and very pretty when broght back to life.
