Concerning the Taurus Millenium Pro PT-145, how's the DAO trigger pull and recoil with standard 230-gr. loads?

Steve

Mine's trigger was long and gritty at first, but after alot of dry firing and shooting it's the smoothest DAO trigger I've ever had. But it's still a very long trigger, maybe the longest I've ever pulled.
I have a Pachmayr slip on grip on mine and the recoil from 230gr isn't bad at all, but I'm compairing it to my 357 snubby. YMMV.

Thanks:

What ammo do you use for self defense in your compact 45 auto?

Steve

P.S. With the short 3.2" barrel of the Millenium Pro in 45 auto, I'm concerned about velocity drop-off.

Am considering Ranger T 230-gr. +P that's rated at 990 fps in a 4" barrel or Double Tap's 230-gr. +P Gold Dot at 1,010 fps from 4" pipe.

Will these +P rounds be a lot harder to control than standard HP's going 100+ fps slower?

....And, what other ammo should I consider for self defense with the 45 auto in the Millenium Pro?

Thanks again in advance of your assistance! Any other suggestions for a compact 45 auto are needed as well.

Steve

I've settled on 185gr handloads for carry, but I'm not sure I've settled on the charge.
I was loading with Speer 200gr +P for abit, recoil was snappy but not uncontrolable.

Can the PT-145's handle the extra 100 fps of +P loads or does Taurus strongly recommend against them? :uhoh:

I love the trigger on mine it is smoother and lighter than my Kel Tec P-11. As far as ammo goes I haven't noticed much difference between them. I have shot Winchester 230g fmj white box. Winchester 230g hp. Wolf 230g fmj, MagTech 230g fmj. Some Hornaday 185g hollow points. Those were nice. I have been picking up a lot of Georgia Arms at the gun show and I shoot there reloaded 185g hollow points @ 1000fps for practice and am going to carry the 185g gold dots @ 1100fps after I finish up the 230g gold dots I accidently bought the first time. Doesn't seem to be much difference between them. I shot two magazines of the 230g gold dots last week and I liked them they are only rated at 850 fps though.
On the Georgia Arms website they list the 230g gold dots as a +p @ 850 fps with 369 ft lbs of energy. The 185g gold dots are a +p @1100 fps with 497 ft lbs of energy.

Mine had a VERY light and smooth trigger - but pretty long (and so of course still not nearly as shootable as a pre-sprung or SAO, but for a defensive gun, real useable). Recoil wasn't bad at all with any non +P ammo.

When I bought my PT-145, the store had two in stock. The display unit and one in the back. I wanted to buy the one in the back but its trigger was not near as nice as the display unit, so I bought tha display. Maybe all those tire kickers had dry-fired the trigger into smoothness? Or maybe there's just that much variation between individuals in the PT-145 family? I dunno, but mine's got a pretty good trigger. Much better than a Kel-Tec P-11. Not as good and my BIL's Glock, though.

Velocity drop in the short barrel is significant. I chrono-ed 3 different commercial loads and got 700fps-750fps from all of them. I assume they would go 850fps in a 5" 1911?

IIRC, Taurus' manual says the PT-145 is rated for loads up to 200? 220? grains at 900fps. I don't know why they wrote it that way. Bad translation from Portugese? Anyway, I interpret that to mean that maybe a 230 gr. load at 850 fps is OK, since that would be similar to 200 or 220 at 900 fps. I use a load with a 185 gr. bullet going about 900fps. But I don't think that rating would allow a steady diet of +P. Just my opinion.

Trigger good is as trigger does. I couldn't get groups near as good with my Glock 17 & 21 as I did with the PT-111 & PT-145 despite the longer sight radius of the Glock. Now that I've put the 3.5 lb trigger connector in both Glocks I can shoot them as good maybe a bit better, but IMHO they are now not a safe gun to carry, not a issue since they are range guns, but a large factor into why I've never bought a small version of a Glock. YMMV.

My trigger gets better each day, but I spend a lot of time dry-firing. I got to the range for the first time yesterday, and put 150 rounds of assorted stuff through it with no malfunctions of any kind. At ten yards it shot like this:

I tried 100 rounds of WWB, a mix of Mag Tech and Hydra-Shock, and 10 rounds of Gold Dot 200-gr +P (not a lot of fun, but manageable.)

I am very happy with my PT145 MP.

Tryed out the trigger of a new PT-145 Millennium Pro and it was the best one I've felt. Would never have guessed it was DAO.

Better trigger than all Glocks.
