I'd have to say the SR 71 is up there for me. It's around 40 years old (who know how old it really is) and still can't be beat in terms of speed. The F-18s, 15s, and 14s are awesome fighters. And then there's the B-52. This is too hard...

Lockheed P-38 Lightning

It was the only plane the US had at the start of WW2 that was a match for the Japanese Type 0 and no other plane looks quite like it.

I've aways liked the P-40 Warhawk specificly the E and N variants.

My Dad loved the P-51 Mustang which is a prettier airplane and superior in most respects, but I love an underdog.

The old F-4 Phantom the workhorse of the 60s 70s and 80s. Dog fighter, bomber, recon you name it it could do it.

In 1986 or 87 I was at an airframe repair facility in central TX and two A-10's came in for refueling. I had never seen one before then and asked one of the pilots if I could take a picture. Not since high school had I heard someone say NO that fast. Very awesome aircraft.

SR-71 and F-4.

My dad was an electrician on F-4's for many years, and I heard lots of stories about them. He was authorized to chain the planes down and run the engines to test the angle-of-attack/autothrottle system and such, and he said the power was unbelievable. The nose gear would compress quite a bit when the engines were run up to full power...

I love the F-4's look, and am still amazed at how long it was a front-line aircraft. It is said that if the Sopwith Camel had served that long, they'd have still been flying them in the Korean War against MiG's.

Hmmm, for 'modern' it would have to be B-1. This is the best thing (for a bomber) that we've got going today. Bar nothing, screw the 2 Billion/ copy stealth, this is where the show's at.

'Course I could be partial. McConnell had them from '94 to '03. Dad was a crew chief and I got to see a lot and learned a lot... :D
P.S.- Seeing what's in that picture, at about 300ft AGL over your head is a truly awesome experience. When the planes left Wichita the last 3 did a final fly off show for the men that worked on 'em and their families. Shock and awe indeed...

Favorite warplane ever? That's easy, Lockheed's P-38.

It would've been interesting to see this monster in it's natural role. It was designed to be a high-altitude interceptor protecting our coast. It might not have been doing what it was intended for in Europe and the Pacific, but it did a good job none the less. A real shame there's only like 7 of 'em still flying... :(

F/A 22 Raptor. Supersonic cruise, vectored thrust that allows some...interesting performance, awesome detection/engagement systems, beautiful lines. What's not to love?

There has never been a jet that can compare to the "class" of a P-38. Several months ago the military was camped at our airport. An F-18 radioed that he was going to make a "flyby". I had my Hassleblad with me and got all ready to take a picture. I got him dead center of the frame I was very pleased with myself, and hurried to get the film processed. When the film came back, all I had on the film was a brown blur. That puppy is FAST.

You didn't specify any classes of aircraft so you get more than 1.
For straight out and out usefulness you get the C130.
For nostalgia factor the P/F51

For something that looks like it'll get er done fast and mean you cant beat the F104, just too much cool factor.

Nothing compares to a Huey... UH-1B

Saved my behind many times. God bless their pilots too.

A10 and F22. I know, choose one, but they're like guns. The F-22 is the glass bedded inlaid and engraved rifle. The A10 is the shottie ;).

I'll second the F4U Corsair. Beautiful plane with a round engine, lots of power and speed.

The one and only jet that is near and dear to my heart. I have worked her for 20 years and will miss her when I retire.

The A-10.
