Hi there all,

Since I am new to this forum and this is my first posting, I wanted to share with you all the latest aquistion to my collection.

Last week, I picked this well used Browning High Power up in a local pawn shop for $252.00/out the door. To my suprise, it was a 76C forged frame Browning High Power made in Belgium.

I am very impressed with it so far and took it shooting after a rigorous inspection and cleaning. It is a very capable shooter with the "smallish" sights that are rudimentary in nature.

I have tossed the idea back and forth of attempting to restore it myself, but every time I get ready to I start like the "character" it already has with honest wear.

Nice pistol, great price. If it's only going to be for fun and range use, I wouldn't modify, or restore, anything. Fix, maintain, and enjoy.

For that price you can refinish it and replace that gritty safety. That wasn't a bargain it was a steal.

Very nice carolinaman! I think if it was mine, I'd leave it "as is" and enjoy the heck out of it. BTW, was that Mike's Pawn Shop out on Rt. 7 (or is that 17?)?

Hi there Catbird,

It was Dick's Pawn Shop on Route 17 in North Myrtle Beach.

The sales person alway's calls me and gives me a "heads up" if he has something about ready to hit the display case that he thinks that I may be interested in.

Nice. I wouldn't do anything but remove the useless mag safety. Drops the trigger pull significantly. To remove the mag safety, field strip, then poke the wee pin in the trigger, just under the frame, out and pull the plunger out of the back of the trigger. No need to remove the trigger to do it either. Nor does it affect the safe operation of the pistol. You just have to remember that the hammer will drop with the mag out.
"...sales person alway's calls me..." You'd best remember him at Christmas time.

Hi there Sunray,

I've pulled the mag safety out of two of my other HP's because of the trigger pull and will probably leave it in this one. Why? The trigger pull is about 5 lbs the way it is now.

Right now, I have a Wolff Service Pack II on the way to replace all of the springs and I will wind up detail stripping it all of the way. It will be interesting to compare the parts to my other HP's.

The salesguy makes a modest commission off everything he sells to me and I hope he remembers me at Christmas! He has made a lot of commission off of me!

One thing I will say is that this HP "feels" more solid with its forged frame as compared to my Mark III.

Hey Carolina,
I think you've got the right line on this pistol. Older pistols with history or personality shouldn't be modified, unless you really need them as a working piece. Have fun with it. Scream if your guy calls about a $252 Sistema!

To all,

Thank you for the warm welcome and I appreciate reading your comments about my newly aquired 76C.

I am resisting the temptation to do any restoration/refinishing right now. I like it in its current "character". I am afraid that applying any of the more modern finishes, i.e. spray on, will just make it look like a cheaply refinished handgun.

Today, I will replace all of the springs in it and take it to the range tomorrow to give it a good work out.

Again, thank you,

Chris
