Saiga, VEPR...where to buy?

I just found this thread, it's a bit dated.

Any current recommendations on where to get NJ acceptable AK clones?

Thanks

Just a thought...if it were me, I'd get the AR simply because you might not be able to get one later in NJ. Nobody is currently trying to ban .44 lever actions...

My FFL is in Freehold. Order any NJ legal AK and he will do the transfer for $25.00 + $15.00 for the NICS check. Buy it out of state and no NJ sales tax. Email me and I'll be happy to give you his information.

Yes.

Get them from an FFL in PA.

Why an FFL? Because he'll keep you square with NJ law, and won't sell you anything on the banned list. Also, because, you know, the Feds require an FFL to be involved in interstate commerce.

Why PA?

Because it's nearby, and because although you have to fill out the Jersey paperwork and show your FID, (The FFL must obey 3 lawsets: Fed, PA & NJ), the paperwork doesn't actually go to jersey, it stays on file in PA, in full accordance with all lawsets. NJ has no jurisdiction to review paperwork in PA.

Short of inheriting or moving in with, it's as close to lawfully getting a longarm and staying off the NJ radar as you're going to get.

good guns good price

can anyone tell me some good semi-auto's easily avalible for say 500 or less.
Oh an i already have an ak so just anything different. If u know of any GERMAN guns that be cool.

thanks people oh and im not in nj im wv i dont know of any gun bans here

Saiga's, Hakim, SKS. My Buddy bought a Century R1A1 ( FAL ) type for $549.00 at a show in PA.

Sarco has been selling blocked mags in NJ for years. If they were not legal, the AG would have shut them down long ago, since the AG is up Sarco's butt all the time for the smallest infractions ....

Well this Jersey guy likes his 44mag Lever and will always keep it handy.

But G w/45, I’m gonna keep that in mind about buying in PA. I can hop the creek (D.R.) And be in Bucks in 10 min. :)

Any hope of getting a specific makes and models that are NJ-friendly to compare? I know our choices are limited but shouldn't stop us from shopping between what few choices we have.

SAR, WASR, Vepr, Arsenal USA, anything that is post-ban compliant and 922r Federal compliant are legal in NJ.

But...

You gotta love the ambiguity of NJ law on this subject.

What happened to the "substantially similar" clause and the long list of no-nos? Did they just give up on that and go with the old federal standard for
post ban?

My understanding was that someone got "pinched" with a MAK90. To make a long story short his lawyer argued that the MAK90 was not "substantially similiar" and the Judge agreed.

Afraid of opening up a "can of worms" so to speak, and possibly "blowing" the entire NJAWB, they turned a blind eye to rifles as long as they complied with the Federal AWB and were 922r compliant. Stores like SARCO were selling SAR 1, 2 & 3's like candy!!!!

IIRC, it was Nappen who made the argument, noting that the definition of the phrase meant "same function", and then further noting that absent a 1:1 copy of every feature, the function was no longer the same.

Ex: Lack of bayo lug meant that a bayo could not be mounted, therefore did not perform the same function, therefore was NOT substantially similiar.

There's a letter from the AG's office that basically says that one can be certain one has an unlawful assault weapon if it's on the named list, or has > 2 evil features.

Interesting

I will definitely have to find a WASR or SAR or whatever to keep the SKS company and share ammo...

I still think its hillarious that the 59/66 is ok because it lacks a pistol grip or detachable magazine. Gotta love C&R...

While we’re on the subject of the Lever guns (I think we were at one time), what are the NJ laws about keeping one in your vehicle ?

The only way you can legally transport a firearm in NJ is to and from a range. Ammo must be in a seperate locked container. Nice Huh???

Yup.

Note that it must be DIRECTLY to or from an approved place (range/gunshop/gunsmith/hunting/etc), with only stops that are BOTH reasonable AND necessary.

Is that fresh cup of wawa coffee on the dashboard NECESSARY?

you can have greater than 15 round capacity mags. However, they have to be blocked.

Actually, NJ JUST changed their laws AGAIN!!! and now it is illegal to have a blocked mag, as of June [I believe] 2005.

how enforcable???????? depends on who is watching you at your range:scrutiny: At Cherry Ridge, in the highlands, I still see AR and M1A shooters using 20's for the league NM they run in the summer.

Proof please??? As far as I know the AG's office did no such thing and stands by the original ruling that "temporary blocked" mags. are OK.

this is cut and pasted right from the Brady web page

"ASSAULT WEAPONS
Are there limitations on assault weapons and magazines? Yes

State law restricts the sale of a list of semiautomatic assault weapons and their copies. People who own such assault weapons are required to obtain a special license and are restricted from selling or giving the weapons to anyone else in the state. State law restricts the sale of rapid-fire ammunition magazines that hold more than 15 rounds. "

I'll find the NJSP link too.
