I just could not wait to hit the range, it was cold and a bit windy, but at least the precipitation stopped and some of the ice is starting to melt.

I just had to shoot this thing.

All shots from 50 yards. Using the Iron sights I think 19 out of 20 at least hitting the paper is not too bad considering its been quite a while for me to have fired a high power rifle of any kind. My poor friend's targets were kinda bare as I don't think he appreciated the recoil and noise these things spit out. I know hes definately not had much rifle experience, so I expected this. Wow, it's quite loud. More than I expected. Im glad I'll never have to go to war with one of these

Anyhow, my handywork was from 50 yards, half off the sandbags, half standing. I had to bump the front sight over a bit and finally near the end started to hit the orange. Im hoping next trip out its sunshine and not so cold and windy as this was not the optimum day to be out there, but the temptation was just too great to go out and check it out.

Don't laugh too hard now I'll be definately doing some more practicing once I can settle down and take my time, thats the problem with something new, your too excited first go around.

Enjoy your laughter now

Makes me sick, at 50 yards I want all my holes to be in the orange

Oh well, next time out Ill figure out the sights and take my time under more optimum conditions

Poor friend just crumpled his targets up and chunked in the trash Poor guy, felt bad for him.

yes sir it is

Yes sir it is, also, forgot to mentinon extending the bayo brought me alot closer to home. Its going to be trial and error, but I think next time out Ill be able to focus more and maybe bring the holes a bit closer together :D

being out there is half the fun, too bad the weather was poor. A couple of months ago I got an M38 and have only shot it once and I have to say, it was really fun to shoot. I was shooting a berm at about 120 yds, next time I'll setup some paper at 50 and see if I can hit some orange. FYI. heard czech ammo is good stuff for it and they have it right now at www.aimsurplus....

Some African teenage conscripts in Namibia were fighting for the Cubans back in the 70's. They all had their bayonets extended because the Cubans told them that "an extended bayonet would GUIDE the Bullet." :):)

Accuracy?

Actually, multiple sources have confirmed that an M44 will generally be more accurate with the bayonet extended.

I also have heard this, but have not been able to try it. Seems to be in the realm of Urban Legend but, I would like to make a scientific eval at a decent yardage with at least some kind of scope to help the accuracy. On the last one I shot the rear sight had some play side to side.

Would be fun to know if the claim is more mental or mechanical.

So basically I have no knowledge either way.

it just feels more well balanced with the bayo out in the open, I think it was supposed to be this way, the soviets had a bayo at the ready mentality, personally I think it looks way more intimidating this way, if memory serves me i think the russian military doctrine required the bayo to be attached at all times, but sometimes in cqb or while in a vehicle or the like its not always feasible, the attached bayo made for quick deployment and it helped to enable the russian solider from not losing it on the battlefield but be able to employ cqb or the like

Personally I see it as the wwii equivalent of tacticool if you want to view it that way :D

who can't say a pistol gripped shotty doesn't have that intimidation thing going for it :D the bayos fall into this category, or at least I think so

Mainly the reason I wanted the m44 was the bayo, worst case scenario if your outta rounds its better than nothing

And once again, I considered it kinda tacticool

I wouldn't say that the Russian guns are more accurate with the bayonettes extended, but they definately seem to be zeroed that way.

One thing I found with the Mosin carbines is it's very easy to develop a flinch after just a couple shots. They have a very healthy kick, a loud boom, and stiff, rough triggers. I shoot one much better with a slip on recoil bad, a padded jacket and douple ear protection. One day I need to try one of those aftermarket drop in triggers they brag about over at www.surplusrifle.com or even just the trigger tweak they describe.

Solution: 13.0-16.0gr of 2400. 170gr cast bullet. Gas check optional. You'll wonder if you're shooting a deep sounding .22LR after you shoot that. :D

This guy I know did some sear work on his, but he took a lot more off of his trigger than I'd want to do on mine.

Your Target shooting

Jeremy, I tell you what you probably shot better with the iron at 50yds than I would have. I have a Mosin M38 and I never fired the Iron on mine. As soon as I purchased it I bought an ATI scope mount kit with the bent bolt and a Leupold scope and took it to the gunsmith. I tell you what a scope on a Mosin makes it a very scary rifle (In an accurate sense). My M38 can compete with any of the new rifles on the market when it comes to accuracy and I am very pleased for a rifle that is over 60yrs old and is less than $110 dollars.

I might consider a scope but doubt it

I might consider a scope but doubt it, I honestly think it looks too nice the way it is.

If I come across another Mosin, probably a 1891/30 is what Im going to be after next that would be the one to entertain the idea of a scope, wether it be a original style PU and or trying out one of these scout weaver style mounts, a bent bolt might be nice too, depends on what style of scope if you opt for a scout type or not, if I find a good deal on one with a cracked stock or really rough stock then one of these synthetic stocks might be a good idea, taking a 1891/30 and turning it into a modernized scoped rifle would be fun indeed

But for now Ill keep this one as is and have some fun with it.

Whatever I do, I will not modify anything in any way permanent and that way it can be put back to original condition.

Im thinking something like this if I ever did consider a scope for this m44

That seems to be the ticket.

I won't laugh. If any of the 3 mosin carbines I own shot even that well, I'd be happy. I'm not one who has ever been impressed with Mosin carbines, even though I gave them 3 chances. :banghead:

As for the bayonet extended or not- an extended bayonet isn't going to make the difference between a minute of side of barn shooter and a respectable shooter.

M38

One thing I have found also is shooting the 184 gr yellow tip is more accurate than the 147 gr silver tip. Silver tip shoots about 3 inches high out of my M38 at 100 yards. But the 184 is dead on. Then out to 200 I can hit a 10 inch steel disk no problem at all. I think I got lucky on the quality on my M38 though. I have seen some shoot much worse.

The M44's are zeroed with the bayonet in the out position.

For MY M-44***, bayo folded vs. extended does make about a 4" shift at 100 Yards. Overall, accuracy is not changed,[same sized groups] but horizontal placement is moved.

*** Your mileage will vary.

Extending the bayonet helps with barrel harmonics; by having it extended, the bayonet keeps the barrel from vibrating excessively.. Assuming your barrel is in halfway decent shape, you should see 4" groups at 50 yds. The lowest rear sight setting ( 1 ) on the carbine versions of the 91/30 is (I believe) for 100 meters.

At the next range outing, use a rest so that the forend of the stock is firmly supported. Hold the rifle with the butt firmly pulled back in your shoulder and squeeze the trigger. The shorter rifles are known for their kick and noise as you have already found out!

Some of the old Mosins may have the rifling lands right at the muzzle worn off by years of cleaning with the steel rod. A lot of the rifles are counterbored by using a special bit that removes some of the lands and creates a new sharp edge to them. If your barrel has been counterbored, use a bore light to see of the last 3/4" to 1" of the barrel is smooth. If you do seel well-worn lands right to the edge of the muzzle, it might be worth having a gunsmith do a counter-bore for you. Recrowning the muzzle can help too.

As mentioned, different bullet weights will make a difference in where the groups are. Try some 147gr and 180gr to see what the difference is compared to the 203gr you have.

jeremy,

you haven't mentioned yet if you reload for this caliber...

the cast bullet suggestion is a sound one...and 2400 is a good choice as would be IMR-4227 or IMR-4198.

lastly, slug the bore to make sure you get the right diameter bullet.

This would be the best way to achieve better accuracy...tailor the load and reduce the flinch...and if all else fails, you can always set a sandbag between your shoulder and the stock. :D

me reload ha :)

This is my first what I consider real rifle, Im not a seasoned shooter, just a every now and then kinda guy, accuracy really aint all that important to me

I just like to go out and make noise, safely of course :)

No seriously, Ill be sticking to factory loads, FWIW I like this thing, its a piece of history to me, I have always wanted some sort of old historical rifle. Of all the different ones, these are priced right, and if needbe, could be utilized for SD and or maybe Deer Hunting provided I ever get invited. I figured for one 100 dollar bill it was worth the investment, it definately looks cool to me and thats all that matters, I just want to be able to go and shoot it every now and then because thats what its meant to do.

Also did not help this was my favorite rifle in the game Call of Duty and why I had such interest in finding for real. Im glad I finally did.

Anyhow, thanks for the tips and suggestions, it is really appreciated.

With time, paitence and a bit of practice Ill be able to get the hang of the sights, figure out what ammo works best for me to handle, and if the ???? hits the fan or I get the oppurtunity to go hunting, I have something that I can actually utilize if needbe. My 9mm and .22 will still be getting most of my attention.

Thanks again folks, this place has been a great resource since I found it.

Ill do you one better I removed my bayo's completly on both of my M44's and like them so much more for misery I went through getting the damn things off. Would someone happen to know the best way to post pics. Ill show you my handy work if I can figure it out.:)

@ overload

I use photobucket.com

free, easy to upload your photo's to

check it out

I wont be removing the bayonet ever :D I wanted the fixed bayo because if I should run out of ammo or it jams or breaks or whatever the reason it just goes click, you have that extra insurance policy where you can stick the sob, that and the fact I love swords and knives as well so anything pointy and sharpish is right up my alley too :D

more the reasons for wanting an m44 specifically were the looks, I just loved the friggin thing, but it being a gun its meant to be shot and so it shall, even if I suck at it LOL :D and its a piece of history, and Im very happy to have it, very fortunate the gunsmith that sold it only buys good ones, so the rifle is in great shape with a good bore and the accuracy is more the shooter than the gun me thinks :D

Ill get better, promise ;)
