Scope a Garand?

There are ways to scope it without drilling the receiver (like mounting on the stock), but they are all equally sacrilege.

:uhoh:

After posting I found some more info under SEARCH. (I did look first)
SO, if I want a historic semi-auto battle rifle "like the Garand" but I also want a scope on it...I'm SOL? What other options are out there? (that are under $1000)

Sportsman's Guide was selling authentic Garand barrels with the integrated scope mount. Buy the barrel and have your Garand re-barreled, however the scope required is NOT your typical 1" scope.

Drill and tap a Garand?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

But, I guess if you wanted to make an M1C/M1D clone, go for it. It's your rifle.

There is a mount that fits onto the rear sight base with no mods. I'm not sure how solid it is, but it would put your head fairly high up. I think Fulton carries it.

The problem with mounting a scope on an M1 is how do you feed it and still have a scope close to the axis of the barrel? With having to feed the clips from the top the scope has to be far forward or off to the side like the C and D models.

Then there's the question of why would you ever want to scope a Garand in the first place.

Buy a Springfield Armory Garand. It's newly made with no history. I've heard that some parts are USGI original, but I believe the reciever is newly made. If you tap that you aren't committing sacrelidge.

B-Square and S&K both make off-set mounts that replace the rear sight. The S&K has a built-in peep and the B-Sqaure doesn't. S&K is about $40 more. Both are solid, but you do have the off-set to deal with.

In the late 80's a company that advertised in Guns and Ammo (can't remember the name) made a center line mount. They also supplied clips with a tab welded to the side to prevent ejection. Field strip the rifle, install the clip from the bottom, and re-install the trigger assembly. The rifle functioned semi-auto, but was then fed like a bolt action, one round at a time from the top. The top round could be pushed down far enough to close the bolt without chambering a round. Bolt locked open on the last round, but no clip ejection.

I had one on my rifle for a while and it worked very well. It went from 1 1/2" groups to 3/4" and sometime less after adding a good scope, as long as I held up my end of the deal.

I emailed Ultimak last year about the possibility of a Scout-style mount for the Garand. I was told they had a sample rilfe and were working on a prototype.

Guys,

AmegaRanges makes a scout mount for the Garand.

Got one. Very nice, though I can't comment on efficacy as yet since I have not mounted it.

Fulton sells this
Handguard, Rear, Rail, for "Scout Mounting," Aluminum, Fulton Armory Super Scout Mount
Now you can get the fastest target acquisition possible on this proven battle rifle by using a modern sight system. Use the iron sights or mount an Aimpoint®, pistol or scout scope, ACOG, Holo-sight, red dot, etc. This rugged aluminum and stainless steel unit bolts on in minutes with NO modifications required. Will fit all standard weight US made mil-spec barrels. The optional Fulton Armory Super Scout Accessory Rail allows quick and secure mounting of lighting devices or laser sights.

edit- looks like its the same unit as the AmegaRanges mount.

Hurry and get it mounted and give us a range report.:) :) My eyes are way past seeing Garand sights :( and this would be a great way to add a scope it would seem.

Looking at the Amega, looks like the rail clamps to the barrel using 8(?) screws. It would probably also go under the lip on the front of the receiver that the lower hand guard usually slips into. Is the front end held under the barrel band, too? What are the set screws and what looks like a woodruff key for?

One of the steps in accurizing the M1 is to be sure the lower hand guard has just a bit of play, endwise, so as not to change the pressure on the barrel as the barrel heats up. If the amega is tight between receiver and barrel band, I am wondering if this may have an effect on accuracy. If it does not, it will be a great way to mount a scope on the Garand.

hps,

Don't hold your breath....

I've been sitting on this since last December and have not had the time to try it on anything.

I used to think I wanted a scoped Garand.....until I shot one.

I found it a very weird, awkward thing to sight through a scope that was so far left of the bore.

I know it's not really that far, but it felt like my head was hanging out in space hundreds of yards from the stock.....even with the lace-on leather cheekpad that was wrapped around the stock for the very purpose of building up the stock for the offset scope.

If you can, find somebody who's got one and shoot it first, and see what you're getting into.

I did get my Garand later. Only I know I'm not scoping it.
