kingpin,

Welcome, glad to have more folks from HoCo here.

In answer to your questions:

•The bill would take effect as of October of 2007.
•Right now they would permit you to keep your firearms....pretty swell of them, huh? If this passes, look for a future bill to confiscate them.

•PM me your address and I'll send you an envelope of goodies, including stickers. :D

@ Norton - Thanks for the info. I've loved guns all my life, but just recently been able to get into them. Still very intimidated by everything I've been learning. Such a huge topic, with so many issues to consider.

Thank you for the offer of goodies, they are much appreciated and will be prominently displayed. PM is forthcoming.

Kingpin.

Hey guys,

I just got a strange call from one of Senator Exums' aides! he called to LMK about the RTC bill and then asked if I was aware of it.

Before we got off the phone, I asked if Senator Exum had reconsidered his stance on SB43 at which he answered "I'm not sure" . On the RTC bill he thinks the Senator will be neutral on it.

Maybe they are paying attention to us!

I wish that there was something that i can do but as i am not a resident of maryland i highly doubt that my sending an email would do a bit of good. Best thing i can suggest is spread the word like wildfire and if there is someone you know who happens to be neutral (doesnt care whether or not the bill passes) explain to them that if they take this right its just a matter of time until they ban speaking......or free will or something. and get them to make a phone call as well. You know the nra is fighting for you but you also need to make your opinions of this violation of your rights known to the senators. MAKE THE SENATORS KNOW THAT IF THEY PASS THIS LAW YOU WILL NOT VOTE FOR THEM AND WILL ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO DO THE SAME. They will get scared and likely change their minds. There is no reason what so ever that they should not be scared to lose votes. Without the votes they are nothing more then some joe who usedtabe a senator.

Good luck guys

Pat

Hello all
Just joined this threat in hops to better fight bill 43. I live on the eastern shore and work for Atlantic Firearms.com, maybe you have herd of it. I have been sending letters and e-mails and phone calls ever since the news of this bill was announced. Myself and the owner plan to be in Annapolis on the 27th. How else can I fight this?!

This just hit Mike Lennett's Mailbox

Dear sir -

I write to respectfully ask you to reconsider your sponsorship of the Proposed SB 43 - The Maryland Assault Weapons Ban of 2007. I cannot in good conscience lend my vote to any representative of the people who chooses to enact such legislation, as it only serves to create more victims in our society.

I am a lawful citizen, and a gun owner. I have passed all state and federal requirements in order to own my firearms, and I use them in a responsible manner. I have never been charged or convicted with any crime, especially one which is violent in nature. I ask you, sir - who truly expects a criminal to obey the laws that society has set forth to follow? The people who would choose to use a weapon to commit violence upon another person already have little care for the rules of society and will be unaffected by such heavy-handed and unfair "bans".

I implore you sir, reconsider your position on this bill. Show your constituents that you are the responsible, upstanding Senator that they put their faith in. Do the right thing sir, and help stop those in our government who would demonize honest citizens, simply because they choose to embrace their Second Amendment right to bear arms.

I hope to hear back from you on this matter,
Thank you for your time.
Jay Brady Kristensen

I'm not much for writing letters, but I think this came out alright for my first time. Sorry if I mis-used the "Quote" function here, I'm also new to messageboards in general, heh.

Blaine,
Welcome to the Highroad. It's good to see you here, wish it could be under better circumstances. You probably don't remember me but I'm the guy from Birmingham, AL that bought a few JLD PTR rifles from you the other month. Anyways, I really don't have the answer to your question but I'm sure others will be able to easily answer your question. You definately are off to a good start

For any members in District 31 (Glen Burnie), I just received a letter from Senator Bryan Simonaire.

He thanked me for taking the time to contact him regarding my opposition to SB43 and then he went on to say that he's a member of the NRA and that he intends to vote against any "Assault Weapons Ban"!

The exact wording is(middle paragraph of letter):

"I wanted to let you know that I am a member of the National Rifle Association and I have no intention of supporting a ban on assault weapons. I will vote to defeat this legislation in Committee and, should it pass to the floor of the Senate, I will vote against it there."

Hi Atlanticfire,

Welcome to THR! There's alot of great guys 'n gals here not to mention a wealth of info to be had!

Regarding SB43, we can use all the help we can get. I echo ccarnels' sentiment about the circumstances upon which we meet, but WTH, you're here and thats what matters!

You already seem to be doin' it!

In between phone calls I've been working on gettin' the word out to people I personally know with mixed results but I'm not givin' up!

Sorry for the confusion

Sorry for the mix up but I’m not actually Blaine. I work for Blain doing FFL paperwork and packaging and shipping and running the show when Blaine is not there. I do seam to remember a shipment of PRTs going to your area but with the volume that we ship it’s hard to remember. Blaine and I do plan to both be in Annapolis on Feb27th. If you go to www.atlanticfirearms.com you will notice a yellow scrolling banner on the top of the main page if you click on that you get our page about the ban. I hope with the amount of people that go to our page that this will get around more.

atlanticfire,

I very much appreciate y'all putting up our flyer on your website. The more distribution we get, the better!

Now...onto business....why don't you guys set up a store front!? :p

Here are the two flyers that we have been distributing previously as well as a new one that is information about the hearings on the 27th of February.

Please distribute freely, particularly if you are in the western or eastern part of the state or have access to a private club.

Here is an analysis of the comparisons between SB43 and the California version, SB23 that was passed:

Atlantic firearms is one of the companies that Blaine operates. I have another full time job besides Atlantic firearms. So I think its more of a time and man power thing.

All:

I'm trying to assemble my testimony for the hearings on the 27th and I need help.

Please forward to me any correspondence that you have received from sponsors of the bill. I seem to recall that Paul Pinsky in particular had a letter that I'd like to dissect.

Please send to: [email protected]

response to FOIA

Anyone else get a response? I sent a FOIA two weeks ago to my senator (Kramer) that was carefully drafted so as NOT to be a boilerplate request. I specifically asked her why she was supporting this bill now when she hadn't in the past.

In response, I got an AG's office form letter last week that said that "numerous FOIAs" were sent to the AWB legislators and that John Josselyn got whatever documents they found, and I should "ask" him if I could see them. There are supposed to be some copies for public inspection in Annapolis, too.

I have never heard of a FOIA response that refers people to another private FOIA submitter. What a crock!

Anyway, only a few senators had responsive documents. The AG's office claimed that legislators had absolute immunity from FOIA requests because of legislative privilege (to allow them to debate issues without fear of prying requests for facts - not even lawyers get that level of privilege during lawsuits  ). However, the generous legislators with documents (Frosh, Lennett, and a few others) graciously allowed whatever documents they had to be revealed, without waiving their privilege. The AG's office helpfully (sarcasm) opined that a lack of supporting documents did not matter regarding the validity of legislation. Nice editorializing . . .

To kill time in Annapolis on Feb. 27, I will go take a look and see what is there.

Got a Response from Pinsky

This little love-note just turned up in my inbox this afternoon. Feast your eyes on the ignorance.

Dear Mr. Kristensen,

Thank you for taking the time to write to me regarding your concern with the assault weapons ban in Maryland.

I sympathize with your position, on this issue as we agree. There are indications that such legislation has been, and will be, effective in reducing gun murders and other firearm related crimes. At least one in five police officers killed in the line of duty are slain with an assault weapons. Assault weapons are the tools of choice for both those involved in drug crimes and murders with multiple victims. Moreover, prohibiting the sale of assault weapons will also contribute to a reduction in the number of violent crimes and death that occur in our neighborhoods each day.

Many states with low crime are largely rural and lack the combination of an urban setting and high concentrations of poverty that plague cities such as Baltimore and much of the D.C. metropolitan area. Consequently, it is inaccurate to compare the effects of assault weapons on crime in other states with their effect on Maryland's crime.

I do not intend to infringe upon the legitimate interests of gun owners; indeed the vast majority of gun owners do not consider assault-style rifles to be legitimate sporting guns.

If you have any further questions or comments about this or any other issue, please call or e-mail me.

Sincerely,

Senator Paul G. Pinsky

District 22

**Can I just add, I have no idea where he comes up with the "we agree" statement. Last time I checked, the letter I sent him was strongly opposed to the proposed ban.**

Man, did you hear what he called your interests?

He called them "illegitimate"; that's harsh...

Kingpin,

Since he is quoting you hard statistics, "one in five" etc.....I think that you need to call him on it with a PIA request. I would also suggest that you specifically state that this is in response to a letter that you received from him and not at all associated with Josselyn's letter from AGC.

K-Romulus,

John Josslyn had sent out an update to AGC members on 18 Feb. The AG's response in a nutshell is that the Senators are exempt from compliance with certain aspects of the MPIA. (I'm at work and am doing this from memory.) I believe that request items 6 and 7 were specifically mentioned as exempt.

Since like the FOIA (applies to the Federal gov't), the MPIA (applies to MD gov't) places the cost of copying the responses to the requests on the requestor. The AG in the response suggested that individual users contact AGC Baltimore and obtain copies from them. (The AG that responded indicated that they had "graciously" sent at no cost to the AGC the consolidated responses.)

Also AGC indicated that they were working on scanning in the files and would post them on the AGC website soon for download.

More info to follow.

Paul

At least one in five police officers killed in the line of duty are slain with an assault weapons.

Umm...last I checked, it was VERY RARE for a police officer to die in the line of duty, and usually from being run over or such.

I think the last time I checked, NYC lost THREE that year, one to a hit and run, one to a beating and one to something else, but not shot.

Yea, I have to admit I don't expect much other than more of the same from Pinsky, or any of them at this point. It seems that they're playing pass-the-request with all our FOIA papers already and I know Pinsky isn't gonna go out of his way to do anything the legit way to get any info to me.

Sorry if I'm sounding like a defeatist, I don't mean to. I'm just new to all this and his piece-of-you-know-what response took a bit out of me.

I'll keep writing though, believe that.

Waiting eagerly for those MSI stickers from Norton, gonna slap 'em all over both mine and my girl's cars. Probably the best way for me to show support all the time.
