Thank you Norton, I'll send it tonight. I don't mean to harp on the stickers, just eager to show support. No rush, I know we've all got more irons in the fire than usual right now with all this.

From today's Annapolis Capital:

Gun laws
This country is simply amazing — let in the criminal element, encourage them in every way. Protect them from harassment, even to the point of sending Border Patrol agents to jail for having the nerve to shoot a run-a-way drug dealer transporting drugs into our country, caught in the act — and now they want to take away our ability to defend ourselves.

Now, due to the new Congress and their desire to end the war (contrary to every instinct for survival as well as all common sense), Americans have every right to expect terrorist activities to escalate in the United States.

What answers do our good friends in the General Assembly have for us? Let’s take away every weapon that will be effective in a possible fight to protect life, limb and family against terrorists.

Of course, we know that every self-respecting criminal will obey this new law if it is passed, just like they obey all the other laws in the state.

For God’s sake, how about a little common sense in Annapolis for a change?

EDIT: never mind, it was a letter to the editor, not an editorial. But yeah, the point stands--you want the homeland secure? Let us help.

I like the idea that they're tying homeland security to the ability of Joe American to defend themselves.

Just wish they could do it without continuing the fantasy that bit player tribal sectarians squabbling over control of the oil rich regions of what remains of Iraq are going to quit fighting over said oil rich regions to come get us here. The Sunnis and Shia are vying for control of their sandbox; our own intelligence indicates that only a very teeny portion of the people giving us trouble there are actually foreign fighters who want nothing more than the opportunity to fight The Great Satan.

The people we have to worry about attacking us here aren't the indigenous tribes bickering over Fallujah and Najaf. The people we need to worry about are the people hiding out in the highlands of Pakistan and Afghanistan building training camps, reempowering the Taliban, etc.--the people we should be concentrating on taking the fight to, something we're not doing while we're baby sitting a civil war in a totally different country.

Okay, I'm going to write a very carefully worded letter to that scumbag (Sorry, "gentleman") with facts, cites, demanding a response to his blatant errors.

Probably for naught, I know.

Still.

Question is, should I include a pic of my daughter with her "assault weapon," and ask him if he'll break the news to her about her hobby making her a terrorist?

Oh, and the Indiana National Guard Youth Program seems to disagree with him. Feel free to use this link, though don't hotlink. But you MUST see this:

madmike,

That picture is bad@##. I'd send it just to drive home the point that AR15s do have (as they would consider it) legitimate uses outside of gunning down infants in the streets

Well, I'm not sure where YOUR intelligence comes from. However, the briefs I get from the Army and Air Force say otherwise.;)

You can probably find some of the declassified portions on the news and the web.

Did any of you guys call into the Chip Franklin Show today on WBAL around noon?

If so, please PM me......

Great googly moogly, I just called two Senator's offices, and I'm shakin' like a leaf. It's hard to make sense when you're nervous as he!! and stutter like a madman!

Sent a PIA to Pinsky, as well as a personal reply to his reply to me. We'll see what happens!

Well, I'm not sure where YOUR intelligence comes from. However, the briefs I get from the Army and Air Force say otherwise.

Foreign fighters make up about 5% of the people we're fighting in Iraq from what I've read. If you've got something different, I'd love to see it. Seems your making an appeal to authority here, and not one that the brass and NIEs agree with.

At the SGS show this weekend I met a guy who was heading back for his second tour; I actually asked him about that, and he said initially you did see some foreign jihadis who wanted to die for the cause, but at this point the supply of people who want to go to Iraq to die for Allah is petering out. For the most part, they're waiting us out so that they can get down to business chopping up what's left of Iraq into tribal territories essentially.

He said basically the people he talked to were glad to SH go, he was a homicidal A-hole who got what he had coming to him, but now that he was gone they wanted to get on with the inevitable and go to town on divvying up the spoils. Our presence there was just keeping the inevitable ruckus just under the surface...these folks are going to go at it sooner or later, it's just a matter of how long we care to keep a lid on it.

In any event, the point stands--I haven't seen anything that indicates any recent upsurge in the number of foreign jihadists infiltrating Iraq.

In any event, to keep this thread-relevant, I agree that HS is a good reason to let us stay armed. Didn't the Japanese admit that they only hoped to keep island hopping and knew they'd never be able to attack the US, in no small part thanks to the fact that the American people themselves were armed?

The armed citizen remains the first and foremost defender of freedom--we not only protect freedom, we embody and represent it.

Helmetcase, please forgive my lack of manners but I'm not sure what your post has to do with the AWB?

On the other hand if you had stuck in a line that stated that you had called all of the Judicial Senators today to voice your opposition to SB 43 and THEN gone off thread I don't think anyone would take issue....

Hey, just responding to what was posted. It is topical though. The antis will use that sort of thing to portray us as loonies divorced from reality who want to keep our ARs for fighting imaginary jihadis in the streets of Baltimore. We have to watch what we say and how we say it. Antis love portraying us as a bunch of paranoid looney tunes tromping around the woods with our evil black rifles, not quite attached to reality, worrying about some international boogieman.

The reality is that Katrina and other similar events demonstrate the need loud and clear for the armed citizen, and that often the only person who can defend you and your community is YOU. I believe that 110%; I just think we have to be careful and articulate about how we phrase that argument so as to avoid providing those who would disarm us with rhetorical ammo.

And please don't get me wrong, I live in a major American city. I know damn well that terrorism is a real threat. It's a good reason to allow armed citizens (imagine if CCW permit holders had been on board the 9/11 planes, we'd be living in a different world and 3000 people would still be alive), for goodness sake.

But if you're gonna use terrorism as a justification for keeping your AR around (something I agree with), you have to understand it's a landmine-filled issue. You gotta be careful where you step, or you're hurting, not helping us. I could write a LTE to the Capital arguing that the antis are really the black helicopter crowd who want to subjugate us to George Soros and force our children to frogmarch to the UN beat...and while there might be a grain of truth to that, it'll only hurt us as gun owners.

+1 on that.

Did anyone else make their phone calls to Md Senators on the Judicial Committee today?

If you did lets see the +1. If you didn't please consider doing it now and leaving them a nice polite but firm message that you urge them NOT to support SB 43.

The numbers are all posted above and it will take 10 mins tops to hit them all.

Here's a script for anyone that has trouble freebirding the call.

My name is <state your name> from <state your town> Md and I am calling you to urge you as strongly as I can to reject SB 43 the proposed Assault Weapon Ban of 2007. This is a bad bill that will not improve the quality of life for the citizens of Maryland and only serve to Criminalize Law Abiding Citizens/Voters. Again, I urge you to reject SB 43 and you can count on me being at the hearing to show my opposition to the bill on 2/27

I've sent Verna Jones (my state senator) an email. I need to go visit her damn office. I've been an atrocious non-factor this year re: actually going to Annapolis and lobbying, but I might be between jobs in the next couple weeks.

I really do need to get the suit and tie on and get my arse down there and make a stink. Last year, I actually got one of my delegates (McHale), listed as pretty much against us btw, to agree to vote for a CCW bill if it included a modest training req.

They do pay attention to people who call. They really pay attention to those who show up in Annapolis and make their voices heard. They REALLY pay attention to people who work on campaigns. We've got a friend in Dwyer for life.

You got that right on every account.

I agree that domestic disasters are a far more likely and sellable reason for KBA.

OTOH, so far, the antis have claimed that that's the WRONG response. Of course, you're MUCH better off being helpless. That way, you can't "escalate the violence.":banghead:

Kingpin,

Send this to Pinsky so he can get his facts together! Maybe he can figure out the highlighted part and "do the math"!

FBI: 122 police officers killed in 2005
May 15, 2006

WASHINGTON --Fifty police officers were shot to death in the United States last year, among 122 who were killed in the line of duty.

In all, 55 officers were killed intentionally, two fewer than in 2004, according to preliminary FBI statistics released Monday. Vehicles were used in five deaths, the bureau said.

At the time they were killed, 34 officers were wearing body armor. But the FBI did not say whether bullets penetrated the armor in any of those deaths. Handguns were used to kill 42 officers, while five were shot with shotguns and three with a rifle. Six officers were killed with their own weapons, the FBI said.

The bureau said that authorities solved all the killings.

Twenty eight officers were killed in the South, 10 in the Midwest, 10 in the West, and five in the Northeast, the FBI said. Two officers were killed in Puerto Rico.

There were 67 accidential deaths of officers in 2005, 15 fewer than a year earlier, the FBI said. There was no description of how those deaths occurred.

The preliminary numbers come from information submitted by more than 10,000 state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies. The FBI publishes final numbers in the fall.

more news on preemption attack

Sorry to keep harping on this, but Manno's threat to preemption is a big deal for me and other MoCo residents. Now it's a big deal for everyone else . . .

The Cease-ownership crowd is definitely smelling blood in the water after 2006 and wanted Manno to push for a statewide repeal instead of just MoCo; he already has the statewide bill drafted!!!

Gun bill backed by House delegation
Sen. Patrick J. Hogan is withholding his support, saying any change should be statewide
by Sean R. Sedam | Staff Writer

ANNAPOLIS — A bill that would allow Montgomery County to enact gun control laws that are stricter than the state’s received support from the county’s House delegation on Friday, but its future in the Senate is murky.

Sen. Patrick J. Hogan, who chairs the Montgomery County Senate delegation, does not support the legislation.

‘‘If we’re going to do something on gun control legislation, personally I think we need to do it statewide, not county by county,” said Hogan (D-Dist. 39) of Montgomery Village. ‘‘Next thing you know, we’re going to be doing it municipality by municipality.”

Hogan said he does not know where colleagues stand on the bill. A hearing before the county’s Senate delegation has yet to be scheduled.

The county’s House delegation on Friday voted in favor of the bill without amendments. A hearing is scheduled for March 9 at 1 p.m. in the House Judiciary Committee.

Del. Roger P. Manno introduced the bill on Feb. 8 as a county bill, despite hearing from gun control advocates who would like to see a statewide bill, he said.

Manno (D-Dist. 19), a freshman lawmaker from Silver Spring, said he drafted two versions of the bill — one version for Montgomery County only, another for statewide — but prefers to keep the focus on Montgomery County.

‘‘My feeling is Montgomery County has a very local problem that requires a local solution,” he said.

Manno has said he is not ‘‘an anti-gun nut” and would not want to draft legislation that would apply to other counties, such as ‘‘Charles County sportsmen who are more concerned about Second Amendment rights,” he said on Friday.

Manno said he has also been asked to sponsor a House version of the bill to ban military-style assault weapons introduced by Sen. Mike G. Lenett (D-Dist. 19) of Silver Spring. He declined.

‘‘I think [sponsoring the ban] is inappropriate if we’re saying we’re not telling other counties what to do,” Manno said.

Hogan's office number is (301) 858-3686. I just called and expressed my thanks for his common sense stand against HB 617. If you live in MoCo it would behoove you to do the same. Two minutes was all it took.

When people come out to Annapolis to lobby for CCW, please be sure to lobby against this preemption attack.

And can't forget: score one for the good guys!

Open forum: Gun bill a wasted effort

I am constantly amazed at the number of ways legislators can dream up to waste taxpayer dollars, destroy our freedom and accomplish nothing.

The latest is Del. Roger Manno’s bill to enact stricter gun laws in Montgomery County (‘‘County delegates mull gun control law,” Jan. 24 article). He doesn’t propose anything specific, just that the county should be able to enact some unknown restrictions in the future.

A task force of 14 experts from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) spent three years reviewing 51 different studies to conclude there was no evidence any gun control laws were effective. They did conclude they needed more money to study it further. Source: http:⁄⁄www.cdc.gov⁄od⁄oc⁄media⁄transcripts⁄t031002.htm

No matter how many laws are passed, criminals will not obey them, as evidenced by the examples cited in the article. Violence is certainly a problem, but expensive, ineffective gun laws are not the solution.

Perhaps if Maryland joined the 40 states that allow their citizens to carry concealed weapons violent crime would be reduced. That is the goal of Del. Manno and the other legislators isn’t it?

A reply from the enemy, and something I can't make heads or tails of.

First off, let me say that it will be a great pleasure to respond to this mistaken missive from Senator Jim Robey -

Dear Jay, thank you for your email regarding SB43. I must be honest with you that I am adamant in my support for this legislation. I can assure you I am not anti-gun; however, I am opposed to making automatic weapons available that have no sporting or hunting use. In my opinion and based upon my experience, assault weapons serve no useful purpose in hunting or shooting sports. They are weapons designed to inflict death, often on a massive scale.

While we may not agree on this issue, I appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts with me on matters that are important to you.

Now, that's one thing. Easy enough to respond to with actual facts, whether or not he wants to accept them is another.

Now, I wrote a PIA to Senator Pinsky, to make him reveal the sources of his "info". I admit I used the stock form Norton posted, but I made positive to change the dates of requested information from the ones on the stock form to 1990-2006. However, this showed up in my inbox today. Is it me, or did they blatantly change the dates back to the ones on the original document so they could hand me a copy of the "blanket" response they're dishing out? And if so, what do I do about it?

Here's the response, hosted by my girl on her website. Please ignore the "batwing.org" part. Thanks.

Robey needs help

Supposedly he faced an "automatic weapon" back in the day when he was a police officer and lived to tell the tale. Unfortunately, he now thinks some firearms are automatic when they are not.

He should see that photo with the young girls at the range. :banghead:

BTW, that was the same letter I got.
