New Folks are not familiar with these true events, and by request of seasoned members I am about to share again.
I used Free Gun Locks and Fire Extinguishers to send messages.
As an older returning student taking a Eng. Lit class, with an Instructor originally from the UK, whom believed the US should adapt the "civilized" ways of the UK and until all guns are banned - all guns should be locked away.
This was something I was not receptive to, nor the few other Pro-Gun Folks in class, with CCW permits, and whom not only had guns, shot them and all...
This was going to be an interesting semester being in the minority with an Instructor cramming down throats all which I and my kind did not subscribe to.
Being the Southern Gentleman I am - I do what comes natural. I Rebel.
Know thy enemy, so I and my classmates attended a Anti-Gun function and got free gun locks. Okay maybe *got* got a little lost in translation. I asked for more and when I was pointed to a open box and "help yourself" - it just made more sense to me, to get the box full of gun locks that had not been opened.
Seems a full box of Literature *just happened* to follow us out as well.
This is not stealing - called *re-distribution* here in the South.
Fire Extinguishers.
I bought some extinguishers like folks keep in the home. Later some inexpensive ones were obtained by someone with resources to save money by being able to order and get a better price for "the cause".
Well it was raining like crazy one day and this UK instructor had a really nice umbrella. I just walked up and stuck a gun lock on it attached to some furniture.
"Now If I needed that umbrella in a hurry, I would have to stop, get a key, unlock it before I could use it" - Instructor.
"Yep" I said a I went back to my seat...with the key, which I piddled with while listening to lecture and taking notes.
She did not get "it", nor did the other folks not brought up right.
Later...
Poster Board made to replicate a "fire". I am armed with bull headedness and Fire Extinguisher with a Gun Lock.
Stick "fire" in College Class room trash can, hand Fire Extinguisher with Gun lock to one of the pet anti gun students and ...wait for it...
"How am I to use a tool in a hurry with a stupid lock on it?"
UK Eng Lit instructors have a very "huffy" arm folding , toe tapping bit they do...in case you ever wondered.
Not entirely satisfied my point was being taken...
I knew some campus security and told them what I wanted to do.
"You have brass gonads, brazen all get out, but heck yeah, we can do this so none of us get busted".
Yes boys and girls, outside, with a crowd, and all safety taken into account, a real fire set in a controlled setting and Fire Extinguishers with gun locks sent a real powerful message - to any and everyone, no matter what they believed about guns, legislations - anything.
"If one needs a tool, they need it."
Hey - I will take a PETA member yelling that out to a crowd, I ain't picky.
Whelp. I / we have gun locks, fire extinguishers and on a roll, and got wind of a Anti-Gun deal with - more gun locks and all be giving out.
Now we had folks being attracted to what we Responsible Gun Owners were doing. Folks finding out about State / Federal Laws. Reading the laws, going to shooting, getting interested in CCW, all sorts of stuff...
UK Eng Lit was busting my A papers to B and C grades, still...honest, it was the principle of what I and others believed in. I'll take a B if it means one single mom gets training and a CCW. Just the way I am.
College. One is supposed crash parties right? I mean that is part of the learning experience and college stuff- right?
I / we thought so too.
Anyone recall the movie Animal House?
What happened was better than the road trip, the food fight and the famous speech Belushi's character made about "When Germany invaded Pearl Harbor" .
Small road trip and We Arrived!
Lady is going on about how bad guns are, evil of guns, gun locks and ...
I hand her a Fire Extinguisher with a gun lock.
Sorta knocked the wind out of her sails. I can look and act as dumb as a brick.
Remember crowd gathered, this lady just carrying on and ...
"Stupid lock! How am I supposed to use a extinguisher in a hurry if a lock is on it?
"My kids know NOT to mess with an extinguisher, as I parented my kids such"
As soon as the words were spoken - they knew they had screwed up and played right into my/ our hands.
Folks put locks back down, put down literature, and wanted to hear what I and my kind had to say.
We crashed a Anti party. A Public one no less
This was better than Belushi smashing the Folks Singer's guitar on the stairwell.
So for a bit, fire extinguishers with gun locks were just left here and there. Visual Activism if you will. Nobody had to say a word, no sign needed, just folks got to thinking for themselves that what is touted and rallied behind is not always Common Sense.
Oleg still needs to a Poster of a everyday simple fire extinguisher with a free cable gun lock.
I bet leaving some out and about, like in a waiting room, front window display of a business, just most anyplace would get folks to stop, wonder and think a bit.
I know, oh how well I know how this has worked and gotten folks to think.
Cost me two slashed tires, busted off radio antenna, my wheel covers being stolen, and my A in Eng Lit busted down to a B.
The rewards of students and others getting "it" were worth it. Students got training CCW and got involved with Freedom.
Feel free to use the Gun Lock on Fire Extinguisher idea.
