New Folks are not familiar with these true events, and by request of seasoned members I am about to share again.

I used Free Gun Locks and Fire Extinguishers to send messages. :)

As an older returning student taking a Eng. Lit class, with an Instructor originally from the UK, whom believed the US should adapt the "civilized" ways of the UK and until all guns are banned - all guns should be locked away.

This was something I was not receptive to, nor the few other Pro-Gun Folks in class, with CCW permits, and whom not only had guns, shot them and all...

This was going to be an interesting semester being in the minority with an Instructor cramming down throats all which I and my kind did not subscribe to.

Being the Southern Gentleman I am - I do what comes natural. I Rebel.

Know thy enemy, so I and my classmates attended a Anti-Gun function and got free gun locks. Okay maybe *got* got a little lost in translation. I asked for more and when I was pointed to a open box and "help yourself" - it just made more sense to me, to get the box full of gun locks that had not been opened.
Seems a full box of Literature *just happened* to follow us out as well.
This is not stealing - called *re-distribution* here in the South.

Fire Extinguishers.

I bought some extinguishers like folks keep in the home. Later some inexpensive ones were obtained by someone with resources to save money by being able to order and get a better price for "the cause".

Well it was raining like crazy one day and this UK instructor had a really nice umbrella. I just walked up and stuck a gun lock on it attached to some furniture.

"Now If I needed that umbrella in a hurry, I would have to stop, get a key, unlock it before I could use it" - Instructor.
"Yep" I said a I went back to my seat...with the key, which I piddled with while listening to lecture and taking notes.

She did not get "it", nor did the other folks not brought up right.

Later...

Poster Board made to replicate a "fire". I am armed with bull headedness and Fire Extinguisher with a Gun Lock.

Stick "fire" in College Class room trash can, hand Fire Extinguisher with Gun lock to one of the pet anti gun students and ...wait for it...

"How am I to use a tool in a hurry with a stupid lock on it?"

UK Eng Lit instructors have a very "huffy" arm folding , toe tapping bit they do...in case you ever wondered.

Not entirely satisfied my point was being taken...
I knew some campus security and told them what I wanted to do.
"You have brass gonads, brazen all get out, but heck yeah, we can do this so none of us get busted".

Yes boys and girls, outside, with a crowd, and all safety taken into account, a real fire set in a controlled setting and Fire Extinguishers with gun locks sent a real powerful message - to any and everyone, no matter what they believed about guns, legislations - anything.

"If one needs a tool, they need it."

Hey - I will take a PETA member yelling that out to a crowd, I ain't picky.

Whelp. I / we have gun locks, fire extinguishers and on a roll, and got wind of a Anti-Gun deal with - more gun locks and all be giving out.

Now we had folks being attracted to what we Responsible Gun Owners were doing. Folks finding out about State / Federal Laws. Reading the laws, going to shooting, getting interested in CCW, all sorts of stuff...
UK Eng Lit was busting my A papers to B and C grades, still...honest, it was the principle of what I and others believed in. I'll take a B if it means one single mom gets training and a CCW. Just the way I am.

College. One is supposed crash parties right? I mean that is part of the learning experience and college stuff- right?

I / we thought so too.
Anyone recall the movie Animal House?
What happened was better than the road trip, the food fight and the famous speech Belushi's character made about "When Germany invaded Pearl Harbor" .

Small road trip and We Arrived!
Lady is going on about how bad guns are, evil of guns, gun locks and ...
I hand her a Fire Extinguisher with a gun lock.

Sorta knocked the wind out of her sails. I can look and act as dumb as a brick.
Remember crowd gathered, this lady just carrying on and ...

"Stupid lock! How am I supposed to use a extinguisher in a hurry if a lock is on it?
"My kids know NOT to mess with an extinguisher, as I parented my kids such"

As soon as the words were spoken - they knew they had screwed up and played right into my/ our hands.

Folks put locks back down, put down literature, and wanted to hear what I and my kind had to say.

We crashed a Anti party. A Public one no less:evil:

This was better than Belushi smashing the Folks Singer's guitar on the stairwell.

So for a bit, fire extinguishers with gun locks were just left here and there. Visual Activism if you will. Nobody had to say a word, no sign needed, just folks got to thinking for themselves that what is touted and rallied behind is not always Common Sense.

Oleg still needs to a Poster of a everyday simple fire extinguisher with a free cable gun lock.

I bet leaving some out and about, like in a waiting room, front window display of a business, just most anyplace would get folks to stop, wonder and think a bit.

I know, oh how well I know how this has worked and gotten folks to think.

Cost me two slashed tires, busted off radio antenna, my wheel covers being stolen, and my A in Eng Lit busted down to a B.

The rewards of students and others getting "it" were worth it. Students got training CCW and got involved with Freedom.

Feel free to use the Gun Lock on Fire Extinguisher idea.

your ob't rebel

Steve

I'm not Oleg, but I couldn't exactly issue him a challenge and rest on my laurels. This was done with Google Image search and some (very) crude photoshop work.

Excellent, but should the word "your" be in the second paragraph?

Referring to the first "your"

Good one!

You need to pull the first "your" out of "your the safety" but otherwise, outstanding!

Applause, indeed!

Great story. Love the analogy and the imagery.

Karz

Maybe they should keep the fire retardent and the extinguisher in separate locked cabinets too, and mix them together before they extinguish the fire.

I keep adding to this... Maybe they should limit the amount of fire retardent in each extinguisher, limit the number of extinguishers in each home, and also regulate the speed at which the fire retardent is expelled from said extinguisher, in the interest of safety, of course.

Oh, and don't forget the permits, paperwork etc., especially if you want to carry or keep one in your car, or cross state lines.

i keep envisioning a video of a guy running into a gas station with his car on fire out in the background and the gas station clerk asks him to fill out paperwork and wait ten days before he can use the fire extinguisher.

You mentioned PETA member. Reminds me of a footnote in a Pratchett book...

"Did you ever notice that PETA members don't throw red paint on leather wearing Hell's Angels?"

We're campaigning against laws that make their use mandatory. No one is saying that it's not sometimes a good idea to lock your firearms up.

Common Sense.
Parenting Kids.
Mentor to others.

Thinking.

These were the points of my Analogy using the Gun Lock on the Fire Extinguisher.
There was a push of gun locks at the time, then again all sorts of "legislative" band-aids were being touted by Politicians, Anti Gun Folks and "supported" by all sorts of sensationalism and pulling of heart strings from all sorts of "organizations" and all.

Folks "get caught up" in the brainwashing of TV, Movies and other Mediums. I get fed up with stupid folks breathing my air to repeat stupid stuff they have no personal ideas on, have not researched for themselves.

One lady kept saying she was Doctor - Sure a PhD in Math. Still folks heard the word "Doctor" and if she said "guns were bad from her perspective being a Doctor..."
Goofballs never thought to check out any thing she said, any cites - nothing.

Related.

MADD. Oh yeah they ticked me off with "Booze and Cars don't mix".

I "debated" it is not a "thing" that does anything. It is the user of said "thing".
Now I do not drink.
I took a "tall boy" of Beer and set onto a lady classmates car.

"Okay, I am going to stand right here and watch that can of beer set onto that car, wreck havoc, death and destruction all by themselves. I want to see for my own eyes how Booze and Cars do not mix. Is this like oil and water? I gotta see this"

Well I was cussed, told I was going to go to hell and all sorts of things by MADD folks. Not very nice at all.

I was and my kind being Civil Disobedient, still civil. No cursing, not raising my voice, smiling, yes ma'am , no ma'ams the whole bit.

MADD finally said something to the effect of it would indeed take a Human being, drinking a beer, to impairment, and getting behind the wheel of a car.
That beer and cars mixed without a human being were not going to cause drunken driving and accidents.

Damn, like pulling teeth from a hen to get them to think for themselves this simple fact.
"Home office says" - MADD folks
"Did it ever occur to you to actually check anything for yourselves? - I asked
"No, just wanted to be a part of something". MADD folks replied

Heck - I got the can of beer, popped the top, watered some plant with the contents and handed this can to a MADD person and "okay, how about agreeing with me, this can is not going to jump into that trash can all by itself, agree with me, it will take a "user" to get it into the can".

Heavens to Betsy, you would have thought I handed them a box full of Cooties. I put the darn can in the trash myself. LEO was laughing himself silly.

Did someone start doing lobotomies on folks at birth or what?!

MADD just had to open mouths one more time. "Coke is safe" - one piped up.
I aced impromtu speech.
"Darlin' did you know State Trooper use Coke to get blood off concrete after an accident? - I asked
"No. You are making that up" she said

LEO quit laughing, big old boy, got that head set like LEOs do.
"Ma'am that is the truth about Cola removing blood from concrete".

MADD lady looked at her Diet Coke, sorta lost a taste for it, and tossed into the trash can.

Me and mine left. Hoping some common sense was passed onto some folks that day.
I think so, I later saw folks looking up Coke products and uses. One was cleaning engines of vehicles.
I was pointed out in the Library and whispers of "that guy".

If I were rich, I would give everyone a .22 rifle a brick of ammo, and arrange for firearm training for each TV turned in.
That would do more for common sense and Freedom training right off the bat right there.

if I get some free time over spring break, I'll take a photo of an extinguisher with a lock on and a fire in the background.

I own gun locks, I use gun locks, I like gun locks.

I would not like mandatory use under the threat of criminal penalty.

At present, every longarm in the house has a gun lock on it: long barreled clay blasting shotguns are not ideal defensive tools in a cramped house... we're out of ammo anyway.

The handgun rests safely in my bedroom, unlocked and fully loaded. If I need it in a hurry, I just need to flip the safety not fumble for keys.

I went with "Gun Locks Kill" for impact. "Mandatory Use of Gun Locks Under Threat Prosecution" didn't look quite as good.

(The "your" thing was a typo, FYI.)

I...we did not put any text, any messages, on the extinguishers with the locks per se'.

Do you really need the Gov't to do your Thinking?
Or
Parenting is done by Parents - Not the Gov't.

See the deal being, Seeing a gun lock on an extinguisher just looks "wrong".
I did this on a big box of Baking Soda as Well.
Baking Soda is what I grew up keeping handy in the kitchen in case of a grease fire on the Stove. I still do as a matter of fact.
Folks did not understand seeing a gun lock on a box of baking soda. Not the usual younger student, for the most part...now some of the older folks did, still it had to be explained.

Fire Extinguishers are an acceptable "thing" one sees from little kid to older adult. From early childhood Extinguishers are associated with being a tool, to put out a fire.
These are everywhere one goes, mounted in Plain Site, and all one has to do is reach up and grab one, or open an Unlocked glass cabinet and use it. Anyone can access these, anytime.

Nobody messes with these, nobody steals these, there these Extinguishers are, everywhere. Fire Dept checks the date codes, These are inspected and maintained like any other "tool".

Gov't brainwashing folks, folks NOT taking Personal Responsibility and wanting Gov't to "fix it" and Folks teaching, training Gov't - that Society "wants to be controlled".

Common Sense and just basic Thinking went out the window somewhere.

Using the Logic of Gun Control and Gov't Control - your kitchen stove would have bars and locks so one would not touch a hot stove top, or reach into a oven without oven mitts.

Locks.
I do not have a problem with locks. It is called being a responsible adult, responsible parent.
Babies, are OUR responsibility to not only keep safe, also to teach, train, educate. As babies get bigger, kids continue to be trained, and taught. This continues until developmental stages are reached and a human being can do those things they can.

Kids get into kitchen cabinets. Kids are curious, which is great and the way it should be. Parents/ adults remove furniture polish and other poisons. Parents let the kids see what is in there - kid just wants to know. Let them see under supervision, just like you would a Firearm.
Show them the pipes and garbage disposal, let them hear the water run...

Now Parent, be the Adult and "now we do not play in the cabinet under the sink. If this takes putting a child lock to reinforce this idea - by all means do so!
Safety caps for wall outlets...Called Parenting, being a Responsible Adult.

If you have one cabinet that you can put a plastic bowl set in, and with parenting and adult supervision, allow that child to SAFELY get into that cabinet...
Let the little brat have that cabinet they can get into and drag them bowls out to play with.
This reinforces some trust and again some responsible parenting and being an adult.
If the kids drags them bowls out, kid learns responsibility to put them back.
Kid is going to need some help on how to get bowls back inside one another, once they see this, do this...well that was another skill passed to a kid.

Kids are NOT dumb. Like we all had to , we had to start learning early and will keep on learning.

Bathrooms.
Dear me, most accidents in the home happen in the Bathroom.
Most lessons in regard to kids have to do with a bathroom.
From getting into the Toilet Paper and itty bitty pieces all over the house, to stuffing the commode full of toilet paper , finding all sorts of stuff to flush down the toilet, dogs drinking out of the toilet, letting the sink run over playing with water...

Parents "parent" and responsible folks are "responsible".

If the gov't gets asked to "do something about bathrooms" - darn bathrooms would have toilets with locks, bath tubs would be regulated umpteen bazillon ways, and the bathroom door would be galvanized steel, with a submarine door, and huge chain with padlock on it.

"All hands to the hall, daddy needs to go pee".
It would take the whole darn family to get the bathroom "un-secure" so one could pee, brush teeth, take a shower, put make-up on, wash hands...

WE preach to the Pro Gun Folks.
Ya know, sometimes I feel we need to Educate Folks about other matters, and perhaps this would attract some to Responsible Firearm Ownership.
Get involved with Elected officials, Voting, Politics, the whole nine yards.

Then again as Ayn Rand shared " Make everything illegal and we all become criminals".

What are you in for kid?

I left the bathroom door open and my dog tore up the toilet paper
I only got 5 years, mommie and daddy got 20 years...
