Ruger Mini: Barrel Accuracy Device

I'd try cutting the barrel to 16", adding a muzzle brake, and bedding the action first. That will usually get you pretty good accuracy. If it's still not shooting to your satisfaction, then this gizmo might be the ticket.

I've been keeping up with thoes threads on Perfect Union. The maker of this product has done a TON of testing and has documented it in a thread on that board. I would purchase this product if I wasn't about to trade my mini off :(

Accurizing the mini is unlike any other gun out there. People have tried just about everything on it, and some of these wild ideas have worked. I wouldn't dismiss this product just yet.

Looks like a cheap clone of the Browning BOSS "Ballistic Optimizing Shooting System".

The Accustrut is the barrel stiffening device that is mounted under the barrel that runs from the gas block to just behind the front sight. The BOSS looking device is not part of the Accu-strut, it is just an add on muzzle brake. The inventor of the Accu-strut has posted some very impressive targets on the Perfect Union using his invention. The logic behind this device is to help reduce the flexing of the wimpy mini barrel.
The Perfect Union http://www.perfectunion.com/forums/index.php?showforum=8 Has some very good advice on how to improve the accuracy of the Ruger Mini14/30. Many are free and just a few minutes of your time and most are just a few bucks.
To accurize my Mini-30 I bedded the stock, had the trigger done, retorqued the gas block screws and slapped on a Biathlon Stabilizer. http://www.henrich3.com/biathalon_stabilizer.htm Bedding it took away the fliers, retorqueing the gas block screws tightened up my groups and installing the Biathlon Stabilizer put me a MOA. Of course, handloading was a big part accurizing my mini.
When the Accu-strut is ready for market I will purchase one and give it a try. For about $60 it is worth a shot.
Here is one of my Mini-30 targets at 100 yards using the Biathlon Stabilizer.

Waiting for the product launch so I can buy one. Everything I have read on the Perfect Union thread that kkina has posted, points towards a lot of thought and engineering into this product.

The Mini factory barrel is maximally pessimal?

It seems you can do almost anything to it and make it shoot better, if you believe Internet gun-fora.

It isn't just the barrels that are poor on Mini-14's. The trigger are poor and the bedding is poor, but you have to start fixing what should have been fixed in the factory with something. If the price is right put it on and tell us if it works.

And this is different from most factory rifles in what way? Every factory rifle I have purchased over the last 30 years has a piss poor trigger, most have no bedding and the ones that are bedded need help anyway. Granted, the mini out of the box is at best a poor shooter, but, why not give it the same attention we give our bolt guns? Work on the trigger, bed the stock, work up some handloads and make the darn thing shoot. If we must rely on the rifle manufactures to put on top notch triggers, correctly bed the stock, free float the barrel etc. then , then , I don't know what.

The dern things just dont give you much to start with due to the skinny tube. You may have better luck with some of the gimic weights vs the usual tricks like bedding and such. About all that really works well on the things is around 600 bucks of new barrel trigger and gas system then bedding has a effect.

eh... It can't hurt, and it does look reasonably cool. I will probably buy one for my Mini, just for the cool factor. If it happens to work as advertised, or even close to advertised, I will report on that. If not, I will report on that as well. That being said, I am pretty poor right now, so don't expect a report any time soon, lol.

Wow, this thread came back from the dead...

Since this thread originally get started a bunch of the guys at perfect union have been experimenting.

I myself have not messed with the struts. However I did learn cutting your barrel shorter (somewhere around 17" is ideal), and/or installing a simple muzzle brake will help your accuracy in a Mini-14 by quite a bit. This in addition to re-torquing your gas block is a big improvement. It's all about changing the barrel harmonics to make it group more consistently. In the case of this strutt they are reinforcing it to make it more rigid. Thus changing the harmonics of the barrel.

I ended up taking my Mini and installing a new muzzle brake, and simply re-torquing the gas block. This got it down to shooting a consistent 2-3MOA at 100yd. It also removed fliers. I also ended up installing an Ultimak rail and LER scope from Nikon on it. This helped even further in the accuracy dept.

Personally I don't care for the Mini, between the accuracy problems and the price I just don't find it versatile enough. I do like it, but a few hundred dollars more will get you a pretty decent AR (even though I hate cleaning them).

If you are looking for cheap accuracy solutions check out Perfect Union. They have a whole forum devoted to just that rifle. Also, you might PM another fellow here. His forum name is Mace Windu. He has put together some very nice Mini-14 rigs.

Sorry guys, I've owned Mini's and I've owned AR's. For the extra couple hundred bucks I'll take the AR: At least it'll shoot better than 2MOA outta the box.

Why don't they do this kind of thing out of the factory? I mean, come on Ruger. Seeing all the money people spend to accurize the damned things should tell you that one could make a killing off of a product that could shoot accurately from the factory.

And that's why I gave away my last ruger for a friend who lives out in the country. He and his kid will use it more than I ever will. It was a fun toy to tinker with, and I learned a lot about how barrel harmonics effect accuracy.

The AR15 and AK rigs are a far better replacement for the Mini-14.
