First, I would like to thank all the members of this board for their insightful sigma posts. I am confident I have made the right choice because of your information.

After months of debate I have settled on buying a Sigma SW40VE for my CCW. I absolutely love the ergonomics of this gun. The trigger is stout but with no safety and its purpose being CCW only, I believe this gun is perfect for its intended duty.

Now comes the part where I am just about to buy, and start thinking of accessories. I would appreciate any input on my accessory list, or alternative choices.

Grips - Hogue Hand-all 17000

Night Sights - Trijicon SA22

Sigma Rail Adapter - ADP-SIGM-140

Laster Sights - FSL-0650-140

Holster - I would like a variety of types, these two caught my eye.

I have a Hogue slip on grip for another firearm I own. my Sigma came with a very good grip built in :) I never considered adding one of the Hogues to it.

The holster I use was labeled as being for one of the smaller sized Glocks, not sure which model anymore, but I only paid 8 bucks for it at a surplus store. It fits perfectly. Nylon btw.

Don't know about laser lights or night sights.

The factory grip seems a tad small for my hands. I really like the fingered grips hogue offer as well.

Has anyone here has tried the bulk ammo offered at, http://www.cabelas.com ? Its hard to beat .40 cal for under 28 cents a shot. I am reserved about buying from them without knowing a thing about them. I would like to buy in lots of 1,000 or more rounds, so if you have a place your satisfied with let me know!

300 mile round trip to the nearest cabelas, a bit to far for cheap ammo lol. Just figured it up and remington .40 cal is only 30 cents a shot, guess that will be my target ammo. I think I will stay away from the cheapest of the cheap, aka PMC and Blazer.

As personal defense ammo goes I have looked into Hydra-Shok (Federal), PD Ammo (Hornady), and Golden Saber HPJ (Remington). To be honest they all look about the same to me ballistics wise. Each manufacturer has some special innovative design that "makes it better" too! HaHa!

I really like that holster, thanks for the link!

As far as the 15 round clip I doubt I will spend the extra cash for 1 more bullet. If I wasn't buying two of the Knife kits and two rebates for a total of 8 14+1 clips, I would consider it though!

If you replace the sights I would go with the MMC adj combat rear sight and the night sight front. You don't need a grip sleeve. The grip is perfect the way it is. Do a trigger job Like I did on mine and the that is all you will need. The trigger pull on my Sigma is about 5 lbs.

The Highnoon Mister Softy is the straight drop version. I am getting one of those for my 642. When I got my Sigma I also got additional 14 round magazines with a rebate form. So I have the 2 that came with the gun and the rebate 2 along with my 15 shot.

Not a MOB holster fan eh? What would your suggestion be then? I am wondering about leg holsters but haven't found one to fit the sigma yet. Wonder how they work with cowboy boots...

I will check out MMC rear sights, thanks. When I held the gun it seemed a little narrow in the grip. I will shoot it with and without the 10 dollar grip and see whats best for me. How did you mod your trigger? Did you replace the striker spring with a weaker one? If so, how many rounds have you put through it since and has it effected your sigma's reliability any? If I get 1,000 rounds through the gun and still don't like the pull, I will look into the trigger mod.

I've been looking around and have seen several statements about breaking in a gun. I'm assuming this means rattling out a ton of ammo in its maiden voyage, is this correct? How many rounds are we talking and does it matter if its rapid succession or not? This will be the first autoloader I have owned and would like to do it right. From past experience breaking things in sure does make a difference in its performance, so I am interested to hear everyone's thoughts.

i have the hogue grip on my 40 sigma. it was abear to get on, but i really like the finger grooves. i had to trim it some for proper fit.

SeekingSigma You could put 2000 rounds through your Sigma and it is not going to help the trigger pull. You need to replace the striker spring with a 3.5 lb spring and remove the large fat spring and keep the skinny one, out of the sear housing. The fat spring is only there to increase the trigger pull. Once you it is removed the trigger pull will be lighten almost in half. Then do a little polishing and you will have an excellent reliable trigger pull. If you get some light primer strikes you can always reinstall the factory striker spring and still have a nice trigger pull.

I would have to toss my 2 cents in about the trigger! When I first got my gun the trigger was a bit tough, but not unbearable. after about 350 rounds through it and it seems to keep improving i.e. easier pull, very clean and crisp. This could be just my finger stength improving or the gun smoothing out from the use.
I have the frame of mind that it is better to do a slow "trigger job" by using the gun and letting it naturally smooth out. I have read too many light primer strike stories to run out change anything right away.
This is just my opinion and nothing more.

I totally agree. I will not sacrifice reliability for comfort! I have seen a lot of post on various forums confirming that the trigger will smooth out over time. If after many dry fire's and 1,000 rounds are put through the gun I will consider the trigger mod but only if I can not shoot the gun accurately because of the trigger pull.

i too love my sigma 9ve the only mod ive made to mine was the hogue grip its alright but it bulks the grip up a little i have short fat fingers;) and some nitesites would definatly be a help , as for a holster i usually carry mine in a fanny pack .

I am a fan of the SOB (small of back) holster. However, that is the WRONG one. The pistol is oriented in the WRONG direction for safe draw.

Look at this pic:

20-mob-4-web.jpg 20-mob-5-web.jpg

The way that is oriented, when you draw your weapon, you have to bring the muzzle across your body to line up for a shot. This is one of the many reasons gangbangers are good at shooting holes in their gluteus maximus. In a stress situation, you might end up shooting yourself.

[soapbox]
And before anyone jumps all over my butt, yes, you shouldn't have your finger on the trigger when you're drawing your weapon. Life isn't perfect, bump in the night is nothing like IDPA, and people with TONS of training get complacent and do stupid things. Safety first. If there's a way to reduce risk, use it.
[/soapbox]

A CORRECT SOB draw holster looks like this:

policestuff_1989_50105472

This way, when you draw it, your weapon's muzzle is pointed away from you as you bring it to bear on your target.

Also, I have to be honest. I really don't like that under the shirt holster. How on earth are you going to get to your weapon if you need it? Are you going to modify all your dress shirts with velcro?

Thanks for the input! I didn't like the way that type required me to draw, good to know it was wrong on top of uncomfortable.

Some new questions...

I have noticed that the SW40VE "kit" models all say they have a thumb safety even though in photo's I can not see one, and the non kit models say no manual safety, does this mean that some models of SW40VE have safety's?

Also, I wanted to know what date the generation III sigmas began manufacturing, as well as how to determine the date of manufacture.

Are there any differences between the normal version and the allied forces version besides black melonite slide? Where the AF versions the most recent?

Also for the life of me I can't figure out why the kits are cheaper than the gun by itself? Were the kits just promotional items or what?

I went down to gander mountain to check out there sigma stock and the salesman told me sigma's had been discontinued and have not been manufactured since Aug. 2007. Is this true? Will this effect smith's lifetime warranty?

Also I got to hold and dry fire a SW40VE again and I found that the trigger pull was quite easy and smooth, as before. Is the trigger pull increased when the gun is loaded?

i wouldn't put much stock in anything you learn at gander mountain, usually. just call S&W customer service; they'd know the answer, if anyone does.
