It's been a long haul, but we finally got Castle Doctrine plus a whole wrath of good concealed carry legislation passed today by the Senate. Senate passed it 25-7. House of Representatives passed it yesterday 73-23. Off to our pro gun Governors desk for his signature.:D

Here's the current article on our (Buckeye Firearms) website:
http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/node/5725

HUGE thank yous go out to Buckeye Firearms Legislative chair, Ken Hanson for all of his pro bono work on this, and to NRA-ILA liaison John Howenwarter. Without these two great guys, we would have never gotten this passed.

That's great news. Thanks for posting.
I cringe at the thought of Gov. Strickland possibly lowering himself to be Obama's running mate.

Awesome! The more I learn about Ken the more impressed and thankful I am regarding his dedication and willingness to work (often for free, I might add) for the cause of RKBA. His lecture/info session at my CHL class answered every question I had about the confusing laws we had until today (most likely), and his tireless efforts are making real progress that benefits ALL Ohioans.

*raises glass*

Here's to Ken Hanson, Buckeye Firearms, and all who fought for our rights on this issue!

When will it be signed into law, and when will it take effect??

Or will all that be disclosed on a later date??

Now, let's get Ken Hanson some paying legal jobs. He deserves to have two paid legal hours of work to every one that he does pro bono.

And you're welcome. It is our pleasure!:D

This will become law 90 days after Gov. Strickland signs it. We don't have a date for when he signs, but it would be within 10 days of hitting his desk. I don't see him taking that long. He's pretty excited about this legislation as well.

Great to have a real patriotic pro-gun Democrat like him in office.
A very rare species these days.
Congrats in advance on getting this bill into law,Linda.

congrats. Theres another state that has realized that you should be able to defend yourself in your own home and no be forced to run like a coward.

Congratulations!!! Now if y'all can just get them to grant reciprocity on CHL's from other states (like Texas.....)

I would have been nice if y'all could have eliminated the rest stop restrictions. Speaking of which, can I have a gun in the console in a rest stop?

We got both of those fixed with this bill. Yes, in 90 some days, after holding it for 4+ years, you will finally be allowed to relieve yourself at a roadside rest stop.:D You will be able to use a government owned shelter house, and get to park in a government owned parking garage.

You will also be able to put your firearm in an UNLOCKED glove box or console.

I'm telling you, this was a great bill we got passed!!

Amen! Thank you to all the BFA volunteers!

If you are an Ohioan, please drop at least an email to your representatives either expressing your appreciation for their support or (respectful) disappointment if they didn't. Same for the Governor, give him a pat on the back. I'm sure some in his party aren't happy about his pro-gun positions. He's come through for us, let him know you appreciate it. So much better than that worm of an ex-governor.

That does sound like a GREAT bill! congrats for Ohio :)

Lucky. We've had good legislation pass Senate/House only to be veto'ed by Gov Kaine.

Will 'Castle Doctrine' help out the open carry issues in OH as well?

Being that half of my family if from Ohio, I am deeply moved by this effort and its results. Congratulations and good job.
Now just get your butts down to Maryland!

RancidSumo,

Wow, I'm surprised to hear that. Always thought WY was one of the most gun-friendly states out there. Would like to live there one day.

There are a few "gotchas". Read the law, before you exercise your carry in Ohio. It would seem the Turnpike may still be a "dry-run", due to employees on site. We will have to wait and see. I was never keen on paying tolls anyway, but,,,,.

The Castle Doctrine part is not restricted to CHLs. It applies to all.

This improvement offers more clarity with fewer "gotchas". I'd say it was worth it. There is always next time around for the remaining issues.
