Just want to see a show of hands, if it were possible to step into a time machine and be with the first wave of troops landing at Omaha on D-Day, who today would without hesitation take part in the undertaking? Assuming you have an M1 Garand and no armor. No M4a1's etc.

Probably not without releasing all sorts of bodily fluids on myself during the moments leading up to the landing. But I like to think so.

Not knowing what was waiting for me, absolutely.

Knowing what I know now? That'd be hard. I like to think I'd man up, but the reality is that this is one of those things that can't be known until the actual moment of truth.

EDIT:
Assuming you have an M1 Garand and no armor. No M4a1's etc.

That doesn't even factor into my decision, either way.

yes, I would be scared beyond words, but I would go.

Even more amazing to me is for exzmple that men went over the top the second day of the Somme

Nope. I did my part today and now... After being in Iraq, and escaping death before. Although, at least in Germany they knew who they were fighting. I don't know. It would be hard knowing the casualty rates of the first wave. On the other hand, you might be able to change that if you went back in time with a little foreknowledge.

believe me....they knew,

Ike reviewed the 101st Airborne on June 5th and when he got into his car afterwards he was overcome......he'd just reviewed and exchanged pleasantries with the some of the finest men is an army of fine men, knowing the casualty estimates were for up to 80% to be lost.

I'd like to hope that I would have signed up and not been called up....
and I hope that I would have gone where I was told without whining...
and done my level best every day without quiting...

But why live in the land of "what if"

Why not instead, look at the countries needs today and step up to the plate.

No need to wonder about it...duty is still calling....our country still needs men of valor.

If you won't do it today (under arguably much better circumstances), I think you have your answer about June the 6th, 1944

For my part, I regret not stepping up in my younger years and doing my service.

That said, I am now on the cusp of too old. And my family could not even begin to support our current lifestyle on what soldiers are paid.

I don't remember where I heard it (Pvt. Pyle's blog I think), but I have heard it said... Why doesn't the military alter their standards of enlistment so as to allow for those who are older or disabled to step up and serve their country? Just because one cannot go into combat does not mean one cannot be a valuable asset. Fill non-combat slots with those wishing to serve, but unable to fight. Then those able to fight can do so. Yeah?

EDIT: Found it.

Why the military needs broken and injured troops.

In the modern age, with enlistment and retention problems being at an extreme high, the modern military can not afford to pass up on anyone interested in joining. There is a significant number of people who would like to join the military but for one reason or another there is a physical characteristic that bars them from enlistment. That is utterly ridiculous. If this were a private company or other government job, the AWD and ACLU would be screaming bloody murder. And rightfully so!

Schleppy the 350 pound computer geek does not need to pass the current PT test or fire a weapon to hack into the Chinese defense computers and find out what those sneaky [edited] are up to. Larry the flat footed accountant does not need to hump a 75lb ruck to work in the finance department. Like wise Mike the double amputee at the knees does not need to run the PT test in order to be in the administration section and process pegs into the right holes.

We need to find all the odd shaped pegs out there and match them up with the right shaped holes. We are wasting a lot of good talent in this country who would like to serve this great Nation. Serving with honor can be done from all positions, by people of all physical capabilities.

No, I would be signed on with the British forces, and luckily those landings went a lot smoother, so I be there with my Lee Enfield, drinking a cup of tea while the tanks took care of everything.

I'd like to think since I raised my hand to fight in the War on Terror that i'd be good enough to have raised my hand back then. So, that's a definate yes.

And if I could lead the men i'm leading now into combat back then, hell yes!

I will not risk my life for this government. In WWII, I would have but I don't believe the country is worth defending now.

I don't even know what to say about that.

I'm an active duty military officer. If I had the infantry training, I couldn't possibly refuse, or not volunteer if it presented itself.

Would like to think so.

However I'm creeping quickly up on 50 with a tricky right knee and at least a 30 pound spare tire....

I like the sniper rifle suggestion!
