I love my P6, but as the "Sig Snobs" will always point out, it's not quite a P225.

Mine's got a good amount of holster wear, but only on the slide. I'm curious as to what y'all would recommend as the best course of action regarding refinishing--should I send it off to Sig to get it re-Nitroned, or should I try to Duracoat it myself?

Also, I've had experience with smoothening up actions before using Tuner's Magic Slurry and other... interesting substances. :) I've never done any work on a Sig, though, and was also wondering if I should send it to the factory for their Service Plan and Action Enhancement Package. The cheap option for this means I could always go the route of the tinkerer, and order the springs from Brownells and install them myself (all the while "guessing" how it completely disassembles and re-assembles).

So, what say ye, THR? :)

P.S. If P6's were manufactured for the German Police, and only die Deutsche Polizei, then why does the slide say "Made in W. Germany" and not "Hergestellt in Bundesrepublik Deutschland?"

I wasn't sure if SIG would work on them. However, their refurb deal used to be really good and I think I would go that way if they'll do it to the P6's.

Please confirm if they work on them or not. I have thought about sending mine to them once I shoot it enough to be sure it's a keeper.

If you want a Sig single stack 9mm just get yourself a P239.

The P6/P225 may be a nice gun, but by the time you have finished renovating it, your $300 gun will have turned into a (heavily used) $700 gun.

but as the "Sig Snobs" will always point out, it's not quite a P225.
Screw them! The P6 is a fine pistol, they're just mad they paid more. :)

Unless the finish is really bad, I'd leave it alone. I have two, one well worn, the other about new. I actually like the worn one a little better, its got that lived in feel to it. :)

Go over to Top Gun Supply. www.topgunsupply.com They have all the parts you need, and they also have an armorers CD thats worth a lot more than the $23 you pay for it. It will walk you through a total tear down and reassembly of most all the P series SIG's. It also has a section specifically on replacing the mainspring, which will take care of the heavy DA trigger.

Mainspring is $4, a complete spring/parts kit (which doesnt have the mainspring for some reason) is $25.

For a $115 extra, on my older gun, I got Meprolight night sights, a nice DA trigger and all the old springs replaced. On the new gun, I just did the sights and trigger.

(heavily used)
Carried maybe, used, not really. Even most of the older ones dont show much wear, and my newer (98) gun barely has a "smiley" on the barrel.

Leave the finish as it is. Nothing says "Character" like a well-used gun. Unscratched guns have no class.

I've seen some in NP3, with wood grips, and they're beautiful.

When mine come in, I'm leaving them with their rough finish. They're $250 carry guns, and will be treated as such. They are, however, being treated to a full disassembly and spring replacement, because they are carry guns and that's one less thing to worry about. I might get a third, forget it's in the safe, and refinish it in a few years when I have a lot more money.

I have refinish several Sig pistols with Norrell's baked on moly finish.
I use their flat black color and the finished product looks very similar to Sig's factory matte finish. In most cases people didn't know it was not the original finish. For about $30 worth of product you can refinish about a 8 pistols.

BTW. I refinish every metal part of the pistol except the barrel, firing mechnism and springs to make it weather proof.

I did just send my slide and barrel to get hard chromed.

Where did you send it to, and how much did it cost?

I'm contemplating sending in my barrel and magazines to be coated in something slick, but only if it's relatively cheap.

My well-carried 6-96 P239 with ten years of shooting on it looks worse than my 1-84 P6 does. Both shoot just as well, however. For a $259 beater, the P6 isn't going to get more than a full strip and detail and some new leather. Maybe a mainspring, maybe not.

And on inspection after getting it, I discovered mine had been armory overhauled: new springs, new roll pins, new grips- not long before it got surplused out.

As a chronic cruffler, I'd say get new springs but leave the finish alone unless it's rusting. Some people like to blue, brown, parkerize, paint, sand, stain, etc. their older guns. I prefer to leave them as-is unless there's a really good reason not to (cracked/dry wood, rusted metal).

do the Duracoat and smooth the action yourself. Resale value is for cars, not some gun a police department unloaded on the cheap.

That slide looks great!

I ordered a third P6 today, along with a half dozen magazines (from Sig USA).

The more I think about it, I will be refinishing at least one of them in some kind of hard chrome, then paying too much for wood grips. I'll keep one of them a beater and carry it, leave one alone and in the safe, and make one a beautiful keeper.

How much is too much for wood grips??? Marschal has them for $70 or less. A whole set of 4 mainsprings from Wolff is only about $10. A whole gunsmith's kit of sights with the single white dot(2 fronts, 3 rears) are $10 from CDNN. So, for $100 you have enough parts to tune the gun any way you want it with spare parts left over for the beater gun. Oh, and I got an in-stock notification from TopGun today that mags are back in stock...if you want to pay $39 for them. I really can't see how there won't be more of them available soon though...much cheaper.

I'll just use my P6 until the mags are empty, then drop it, and get my XD. Geez, a carry gun doesn't need 4 mags, unless the mob is after you.

I sent mine off to Todd at Customized Creationz to have it CeraKoted in Sig Black. Looks amazing, cost about $125 plus shipping.

Just about the only thing I'm thinking of doing with my P6s is to replace the sights with Sig bar-dot sights.

The finish is pretty worn, but not worse than the p229 or p226 I've owned and carried for years. So the P6s fit right in to the family without a lot of break-in ...

P6's are no longer being supported by Sig...that includes replacement parts and springs. When supplies in stock are gone, they are gone until an aftermarket manufacturer replaces them.

Ditto Todd at CUSTOMIZED CREATIONZ...
He's done several of my P6s and a couple other SIGs (Cerakote Black)...
And if needed, he'll do new sights, triggers, hammer-springs, etc.
Excellent work, quick turn-around and you're getting a 'new' gun. Highly recommend!!
