DRT as in DeadRightThere;)

I recently started a thread about how I was really enjoying my Glock G20 10mm. Well, Friday I had a chance to put it to good use. I was teaching a sportingclay clinic @ WW Sportingclays right on the Ga/Fl line. After Friday's lessons, I went to visit a buddy who recently went to work on a large[ over 40,000 acre ] plantation in S. Georgia as the manager of the quail hunting operation on the property.

He wanted to show me around some of the property, so we headed for his work truck. He mentioned that he was having a tough time with wild hogs tearing up all of the woods roads and especially his food plots that they plant for the turkeys and quail. He told me to bring a gun with me, if I had one:rolleyes: , and we would work on the hog population if we saw any.

Well, all I had with me was a BERETTA O/U 12ga sporting gun with 32" barrels and #7.5 shoot[not exactly my first pic] and my G20 loaded with DoubleTap ammo's 180 gr. Gold Dots. As I got in the cab of the truck, my buddy, who is a great shotgun shot, but has little experience with pistols made a smart a$$ed comment about not being able to kill anything bigger than a piglet with that plastic pistol. I explained about the ballistics, and of course it fell on deaf ears.....

We hadn't been in the truck 10 minutes, and as we rounded a bend in the dirt woods road, we spotted 2 young boars tearing up a quail food plot about 50 yards off the road. Sometimes when pigs are feeding, with there heads down in the dirt, they can be fairly oblivious to the world around them. My buddy just took his foot off the gas and coasted around the bend behind a thicket of palmetto bushes on the side of the road. As the truck stopped, I slide out the passenger door and stepped back in the edge of the field. The closest pig was probably 10 yards closer than the one I shot, but the close one knew something was up and started trotting away, offering only a quartering away shot from the rear...not ideal. The further hog was not sure what was going on, and was offering a steady broadside shot as he raised his head and tested the wind.

Though the sun had just set behind the trees, it was still plenty light. The tritium in the HEINIE night sights was just barely glowing as I settled the front post on the back edge of the boar's shoulder. I remember taking a short second and steadying my sight picture before pressing the trigger to the rear. At the sound of the shot, the hog just slumped forward onto his chest, remaining upright for a few seconds.....finally starting to kick a bit and fell over on his side. DRT. When my host came running out of the truck, he couldn't believe that I hit the hog....much less killed it. He was sure that it would get up and run into the nearby swamp...so he kept hollering for me to shoot it again. I was pretty sure it was down for the count.....but even premium ammo is cheap, so I administered a finisher shot to the side of the head. I believe it was totally unnecessary. We later paced off the shot, and while it was 54 steps, I think it was closer to 45 yards.

The young boar was 185 lbs. The 180gr. 10mm Gold Dot load from DoubleTap ammo is listed as running 1300 fps from a G20's 4.6" barrel. The bullet entered on the back edge of the shoulder and exited[!] the front of the off side shoulder. This means the bullet passed through approx. 19" of hog.....thick hide on both sides, both shoulders[though it didn't center either shoulder] and the lungs between them. The exit wound was pretty small.....I could just stick my finger in it.....but you could tell that tissue UNDER the thick hide was heavily damaged. This is EXCELLENT penetration. I'm sure that there was expansion while the bullet traversed the body, but as the bullet shed the petals of the mushroom and lost velocity, it poked a small hole out of the far side. The second shot penetrated through the skull,......making a LARGE[1.5"] exit hole out the other side. Side to side, the hog's head was probably 10" of bone and gristle.

I normally would have been very intent on a postmortem as we skinned the hog. I like to learn about a given bullet's performance on living animals.....not just what we read about jello and ballistic charts. Unfortunately we had to get cleaned up to meet some eligible members of the fairer sex early that evening, so we gave the pig to some guys that work on the plantation. They were already planning a barbecue as they were getting out their skinning knives...

Overall, I'm very impressed with the G20 and with Double Tap's Gold Dot load. The G20 can be put to work as a defensive pistol for the car or castle, as a CCW piece, a hunting gun, or run and gun @ an IDPA match. It might not be my first pick for any of these activities, but it will hold up its end of the deal if you do your part.

Here is Double tap's website....

The only camera I could find was a disposable, and finding it took awhile!.....so these pics aren't great. Now lets see if I can post them.....

OK, now I officially give up on the 10mm Silvertip and will be ordering Doubletap.
Nice shooting at 45 yards!

Looking for something to criticize, here - - -

One single shot. Forty-five yards in failing light. Excellent bullet placement. Perfect bullet performance.

There must be SOMETHING wrong there, but darned if I can figure what it is.

Nice work, Will.

Johnny

That's a serious shot. 180 lbs pig downed at that range and the bullet traversed the whole animal.

Wouldn't the performance of that round qualify as overpenetration for self defense purposes against humans? I'm wondering which is better for self-defense, a G20 or a G21? Maybe I could use a lighter load with the G20 but overpenetration is a concern. What do you think?

Quartering away from the rear is actually just about the best shot you can take. It offers a chance to get into the rib cage without even having to break a rib. Aim for the offside front leg.

Nice job!

I am a little upset that you posted that picture though...it makes me want a G20 and I have no money!

Missed the BBQ!

McNett,
Unfortnately, I was teaching on the shotgun range when those guys had the BBQ party. I heard later that the pig was a hit! Thanks again for full power, high performance 10mm ammo,...just like its supposed to be!

Johnny,
Perfect? This time.....what? Do you think I post a thread about all the MISSES?:p

Siggy,
Yeah, this load is a little "heavy" on the penetration. If I were picking a self defence only load.....I would look at bullets in the 135-165gr range. This pistol is a great "all around" sidearm for me.....hence the "Do all" 180 gr loading.

Wedge,
I feel your pain. I heard the CDNN [ www.cdnn.com ] had used G20's for CHEAP:what:

Here2learn,
I don't have kids....but Gaston Glock out-did himself with the G20.

Everybody, get a G20, buck up for a Hicap, load it with Doubletap, and feel the POWER.

:D

Excellent job. Looks like the gun, cartridge, ammo maker and shooter all did their job perfectly!

As for the 10mm and self defense/overpenetration, yes, the 180gr. loads at max. velocity off more penetration than would normally be needed against 2 legged critters. When downloaded about 100fps, the 180gr. pills are about perfect for self defense running right around 14" of penetration. At 1300+fps, they tend to exit 18" gelatin blocks. MarkCO over at Glock Talk cleany took an elk with a 180gr. Gold Dot handloaded to 1280fps from his 10mm 1911.

DTs 135 and 165gr. loads are what you would want for a self defense. I believe their 135gr. load does in the neighborhood of 10" and the 165gr. loads are in the 14" range. Again, 180gr. loads at around 1200fps also go in the 14" range (same with 155gr. loads at around 1350-1375fps according to AmmoLab). IMHO, DT's 165gr. Gold Dot at 1400fps is a great all-around self defense load if you don't find yourself in the woods too often.

has anyone tested the 165 corbon on a hog? their surppose to be traveling at 1250, how much would they penertrate?

Thats horrible for a 10mm. I would stick with double taps stuff for hunting hogs. a 165gr should mover ~1400fps in a 10mm. The velocity you posted is more like a 40S&W load.

thanks idholt1, but i use this load as my ccw carry ammo. would it be safe to carry the 165gr double tapp ammo, due to overpenertration? i always was told the dt ammo 165 and up is too much power, is that true? i'm new to the 10mm.

Great story, and excellent shooting. I picked up a G20 earlier this year and it really is the ultimate autoloading pistol IMO. It is very easy to shoot, but it packs a "magnum-grade" punch... 16 times in a row. I generally prefer the DoubleTap 200gr Controlled Expansion load for hunting game of that size. But it looks like the Gold Dot did the job nicely. The accuracy of the G20 is just amazing... I was out in the desert last week and somehow managed to hit a half-gallon milk quart full of water at 150 yards off hand. The bullet trajectory is so flat that I didn't really have to compensate for bullet drop at that range. The G20 is an amazing gun that is always with me when I venture in the outdoors.

I'm not sure that I would carry 10mm Auto in dense public places... even the 165g. Lots of people do carry 10mm, but I bet that pretty much any loading in 10mm would fully traverse the average human body. I use my G20 for home defense with 165g Golden Sabers, and for backcountry defense with 200g FMJ-FP and JHP's intermingled. For carry in public, I am content with the 9mm.

Here are some images of the G20 compared to the G26...

thanks kbintheslc, the 10mm is my only handgun to carry. i do have a G21sf on layaway. how about the 135gr 1600 from dt or the corbon 165 1250fps, hornady 155gr?

I'm betting the 135g would make a good carry load. Faster and lighter = faster expansion and less penetration = larger and more shallow wound channel. Double Tap tends to load most of their 10mm JHP's pretty hot, which can be good as long as I am sure of whats beyond my target. Besides that, I bet that two holes for the price of one bullet would be a good advantage in a gunfight.
Also, if reloading is an option, you can roll some "mild" carry loads for yourself. Have fun out there.

thanks again, but sorry dont reload. what about the corbon 165gr 1250fps or hornady 200gr 1050fps? these are the loads i have on hand.

thanks

That was a cool story! The pics were down though.. I'd like to see that boar! (Try photobucket.com)
Actually, I would have loved more to join that barbeque!!

I'm looking for a good hunting/outdoors handgun too. I'm thinking polymer and high-cap.

I was thinking about maybe getting a 10mm Glock, but I think I'd rather go with one of those new XDm .40s in OD green. I'm pretty sure the .40 is close in power to the 10mm anyways. I know a 10mm can be pretty wicked when hand-loaded, but the average factory loading probably isn't much better than a .40. Besides, I'm not too fond of those bigger Glocks like the 10mm, and .45s. But I do love my g19 more than any of my handguns!

I am thinking that the lighter and faster Corbon 165g would penetrate less than the heavier and slower round. The only way to know for sure is to do an unofficial test. I would soak 3 phone books in water and duct tape them together. Put one round of each cartridge through on the right and left side of the books and see which one goes deeper. Make sure you space your shots enough so the wound channels don't intersect. Then carry the load that penetrates less.

I'm pretty sure the .40 is close in power to the 10mm anyways. -CPshooter
I guess that depends on what you consider "close". Many 10mm factory loadings hit with over 700ft/lbs of energy. In contrast, most 40 S&W loadings are in the mid-to-upper 400's. Comparing the two is like comparing a 38 special with a 357 magnum. IMO, the 10mm auto has significantly more punch than the 40 S&W. On average, the 40 SW is only about 65-70% as potent as the 10mm auto. Now that may be enough for 2-legged predators, but if you want a pistol that will handle anything that walks in the lower 48, the 10mm is the way to go.
