Is Che Guevara carrying an M1 Carbine here?

It is well to remember that the Batista regime was friendly to the U.S., and we armed them.
M-1 Carbines and M-1 rifles were the issue Cuban weapon then.

When Fidel (& Che) took over, he had mostly U.S. GI weapons at his disposal until later, when the communists rearmed them.

Even Fidel's trademark O.D. green uniform and blocked fatigue cap was standard U.S. GI issue of the time.

I only got the story from a former KGB officer over drinks, many many years afterward, so it could have been lore. But this particular person did not have a habit of making stuff up. No need to when the truth was far more entertaining and often less believable than fiction.

Some of the leading lights in my own profession are idiots. They just talk good and clean up nice. All those extra years of school give us a big bunker full of crap to throw out there when challeneged, and since we've heard it all before, we appear more intelligent than we sometimes actually are.

It is a conceit of the American middle classes (ooooh! -- sounding a little commie now!) that education and economic achievement bespeaks intelligence. The upper classes know too many wealthy (even successful) idiots to try and claim that without laughing, and the lower classes know too many geniuses working in blue collar jobs to buy into that malarky. Only the middle class strivers want to believe they are in middle management and professional jobs because of their intellect.

A guy with an 85 IQ certainly could make it through law school (a crappy one, at least), and I doubt medical school is that much harder. He'd have trouble passing any bar examination, but Che didn't complete his internship, right?

IIRC an IQ of 85 is borderline mentally retarded. (The dividing line having been arbitrarily place 1 standard deviation below norm, but I haven't bothered reading anything about IQ tests in the last 10 years.)

Well there's a movie -oops I mean film- coming out about Che....Friday! Who knew? I wonder if it will be a balanced representation?

And it won an award at Cannes...who would've guessed!

in Steven Soderbergh's two-part biopic Che on the revolutionary hero:barf:.
(emphasis mine)

Does it seem ironic that we still trash communists after the bank and auto bailouts? Didnt the bank bailout result in partial ownership by the government? Che would be proud! Communism is the new capitalism.
Not enough people understand the difference to even realize it. But you are correct. We are probably more communist than the communists were.

Actualy it is socialism, communism is simply a form of socialism. So I would call it socialism, but you are correct.
Much of Europe and even the US is becoming more socialist than many openly socialist places were half a century ago.
Socialism is becoming the new Western style of government.

When significant portions of the population are taxed, and those who make more are taxed at a much higher percentage, and those taxes then go to essentialy nationalize industries both financial and otherwise you have clear socialism.
Think of it this way, Americans are paying for those "bailouts" by essentialy being enslaved to work for free for _ _ _ number of days a year.
The government does not just have that money, it is created out of thin air in the fractional banking system, but then backed by the sweat of the American worker who is enslaved to pay those debts through taxes which will be taken at the point of a gun if necessary (It never is paid off, if it was there would be no dollar bills in society, which are "federal reserve notes" of debt. Money represents debt in fractional banking.) Taxes are not optional, and they will simply sieze all assets and throw you in prison if they are not paid.

If you understand fractional banking and how it works, combined with using tax dollars to "bail out" you will see it is more socialist than even most of communism.
The difference is there is even more to take from the people in our form of socialism than there ever was in communism. We are allowed to be just productive enough to keep capitalist motivation alive, even though the majority of the wealth created then goes to socialism.
The top 50% of society pays well over 50% of thier income in taxes, and 97% of all the taxes in society. A large percent in income tax, property tax, sales tax, and various "fees" which are also taxes. If a license or fee is required, it is a tax you must pay. People get used to just thinking of the big clear "taxes" at the end of the year, but there is many others you need to add to the total.
Those people also do not qualify for most of the programs those taxes then pay for.
So they are essentialy spending well over half thier lives just working for free!

So the end result is only marginaly different than the desired outcome of communism: From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
All while issuing new currency in fractional banking backed by future debt of the society they must then work off with tax revenue.
So we really just have a more successful form of socialism.

As soon as I get some cash I'm planning on getting a few more commie guns. I kinda got myself hooked on Mosins. Those things really ought to have a warning label of some sort, they really are addicting.
Actualy the Mosin is from Czarist Russian Empire times. It was used since 1891 and fought in many wars (including the large war with Japan) before the Communist Revolution which did not win until the early 1920s.
So Mosin Nagants are not really commie guns.

Duke of Doubt--

While I agree with you about idiots in high places, I'm still not convinced that a person with an 85 IQ could get through med school. Could it be that your KGB guy exaggerated by a point or ten?

Oh, it's more than possible. But the reason the subject came up in the first place was -- get this -- the former KGB officer, who holds two U.S. doctoral degrees, was dating another Russian expat of my acquaintance with a doctoral candidacy at the time from a leading American university and who was earning very high five figures while working part time as a financial consultant on the side -- all with a Russian tested IQ of 85. BTW, 85 IQ boyfriend is one of the most brilliant minds, loyal friends and dangerous men I've ever known. I don't think it was a bad test either, as his mother, a Soviet psychiatrist (scary) had him retested as she was mortified.

I don't know, maybe the Russians are smarter than we are, or their brains work different.

A yahoo search brought me to myself answering my own question.

That is awesome.

Looks like an M2 stock to me, but it's hard to tell and doesn't mean anything either way anyhow.

Without knowing what test he was given it's hard to judge the 85 score. 85 is in the borderline range on the Wechsler tests, but an 86 is considered low average, and the new WAIS-4 considers 85 low average IIRC. The tests (particularly the older ones like he would have encountered) are not exactly culture-neutral, and if they're administered to someone for whom the language requires translation or it's their 2nd language the scores will be artificially lowered.

Not that I think the guy was all that special, but the deck could easily have been stacked against him due to poor test administration procedures. IQ scores are just that, scores on a test. Depending on the test and procedures used they could either be applicable to the situation or junk-science garbage.

I still like the Che shirt that sez "Commies aren't cool." Seems I saw that one here, pre-schism...

From the picture it looks like this was a while before Castro took power, at this point they had something like 20 men and 14 rifles so I doubt they were picky.

As far as American made weapons in Cuban hands go, Fidel's favorite rifle when he was a guerilla in the mountains was a Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in .30-06.

Just my .02,

"W" got his MBA from Yale. What one idiot can do, another idiot can do!

"W" supposedly has an IQ of 124.

IQ is a number that has very little outcome on the capability of a person to perform a job or function and it really depends on scales, and tests taken.

When people start tossing around IQ scores like it means they're smarter or better than somebody, it's usually time to ignore them.

Also, I believe he received his MBA from Harvard.

Most those people earned thiers on the internet.

What people have to understand about Che is that he ascribed to the communist philosophy because he saw what dictators and economic inequality did to the Latin American people, and as a result saw capitalism as the result of this extreme poverty. This is why many Latin Americans see communism as a good thing, because many of them live in extreme economic hardship and have had their countries exploited by the United States, Spain, and England. Take the United Fruit Company for example, it majorly exploited Costa Rica's laborers and its lands. Great Brittain owned railroads, petroleum companies, etc in all parts of Latin America. There was a lot of imperialistic presence in Latin America, and this caused peoples thinkings to swing radically the other direction. Che is a product of his environment. However I have a great deal of respect for Che because he fought for the greater good of the people. Although many may take issue and identify Che with Castro's reign, both of them fought for what they thought would lead people out of poverty. I also have to give credit to them because Ernesto "Che" Guevarra, Camilo Cienfuegos, and Raúl and Fidel Castro along with a small army of followers threw over a pretty huge political machine in Cuba. Don't forget, people welcomed Castro and Che cheering and screaming.

"W" is not at all stupid. He's plenty smart enough to look stupid in order to have a great excuse. Now, as far as brain cells, I'm sure all the drugs and alcohol he did burned out lots of those.

Speaking of low IQs.

How did this thread go from "ID that rifle" to "W drinks a lot"?
