Although I refer to them as "tactical" rifles, I have to laugh at some of the posters who get their panties all in a bunch because of the term "sniper" when applied to a particular type of rifle. It's just semantics. In any case, here's a few of mine.
My Tactical rifle made from a run-of-the-mill Izhevsk Mosin 91/30 dated 1942 (the year I was born). The bore cleaned up good, slugs .3105 from the muzzle end and it does sub-moa with the right handloads - Barrel has been re-crowned with a flat target crown, free floated for all but the last 2" at the muzzle end and tensioned with cork at that point.
The scope and mount each cost more than the rifle did in the first place, but it's definitely a "keeper"
I have an ARMS #18 for the M1A but it is still awaiting optics. It will probably have a 4.5-14 Nikon on it to get me through hunting season. Eventually I want to have it in either a bedded McMillan with a Leupold 3.5-10x40 M1 Tactical or a JAE Gen II with a 2.5-10 IOR Valdada. In the meantime, I've taken the rifle out to 600 yards with iron sights and ball ammo and it hasn't let me down.
The AR-50 is my bro's. He used about half of his sign on bonus to get it. The rifle has the Armalite 50 MOA canted base and Prince bipod. Optics are Nightforce--8-32x56 NP-R2 NXS, IIRC. Rings are SEI. He's pretty much settled on the 750 gr Barnes LRS at about 2700 fps. Recoil is extremely mild but blast in earth-shattering.
The other rifle is a custom .338 RUM my dad had built on a Rem M700LA. Barrel is a 30 Lilja #5. He's got a Leupold VX-III LR with B&C reticle in Talley rings on it. It's his long range target/elk rifle. He's chronoed 250 gr SMKs at over 3100 fps out of it but it currently working up loads with a 250 gr Nosler Accubond for hunting.
Here's mine. Its a Remington 700 SPS Tactical, .308, 20" heavy barrel, Nikon Pro-Staff 3-9x. My best group so far is one inch at 200 yards, with handloads. The pistol is my XD-40.
Negative, it's a CZ 750 Sniper <<---that's what CZ actually calls it
"With an effective range of 800 yards, the CZ 750 Sniper is ideal for use by the elite military and law enforcement snipers it was designed for. The synthetic thumbhole sniper style stock is adjustable for comb height as well as length of pull. The underside of the fore-end is fitted with a 220mm long rail that provides multiple attachment points for a bipod. "
So can I consider my rifle a "sniper" rifle since CZ says so??
IMHO, who cares what you call it. You can't live your life worrying about what the anti's think of us.
I don't own any "Sniper" rifles, but I have a few nice light target rifles, and some very accurate hunting rifles. Besides a shotgun is better suited for hunting snipe as wing shooting with a rifle is very hard.
Yes, it is deeply recessed crown done by a local gunsmith, a very talented young guy. I saw the deep crown on a CZ that he customized and asked him about it, he says that beyond the obvious protection it affords the crown it also projects the muzzle blast (such as it is with a .22) downrange and makes it quieter for the shooter. I just thought it was kind of cool and different and was going to recrown it anyway, so I had him do the deep style and also pillar bed and parkerize the rifle. It did change the sound of the gun, much less noise with high velocity ammo and subsonic sounds like it's suppressed, at least from behind the rifle.
Here's a better photo-
Here is my nighttime rig. as soon as I receive my Basset rail and find some way to mount the light to the bayonet lug, all the stuff is going on my M1A. Note the gigantic unidentified as of yet scope. There's a thread on it in the accy. forum.
prepare for edits to add photos. Hooray Palm Centro.
other pics including the reticle (I know what the crosshairs do... that's about it) with all kinds of stuff. Another view of the rig, plus one of just the scope.
Savage 10FP, .308 20" Heavy barrel, Choate stock, Swift 4.5-14x44 scope, Harris bipod. Consistant .5" at 100yrds, 1.100" at 200 3" at 1000yrds.......Oh wait, that was some other guy
