I'm surrounded by liberals
Well I've wanted to get a good rifle for sometime and I've heard that the 10FP is supposed to be quite an accurate rifle right out of the box and it's quite affordable.

The model I got is the 10FP "Folding Choate". I like the folding stock and aside from it's compact size and for whatever it's worth- it just looks good in my book.

I have a few things that I'm interested in getting for it and I'd be very interested in suggestions or thoughts-

1.) The rifle doesn't have any sites or optics on it. I'd be interested in what others are running or recommending for base, rings, and a scope for a budget/mid-range setup.

2.) Midrange ammo to site in and get used to the rifle to it. I was thinking of some Federal American Eagle 150gr to get started on. It's cheap and it seems most are pretty happy with it. As a starter I figure it would be a waste to get match grade stuff just to site in.

3.) Bipod. At this point I don't think I'll be getting one right away but at some point I would be interested in having one installed. The Folding Choate has a track on the bottom of it that seems a bit peculiar. Is anyone familiar with this?

Thank-you very much for any suggestions on this!

I've had a Savage 10FP for a while with one of theseon it.

Leupold base and rings, Harris bipod, and Bell & Carlson Medalist stock. It shoots amazingly well, you'll love that rifle. Good shooting!

Click through each selection. Even though they have an "all 308" link, it doesn't show all they have.

Federal is pretty good stuff IMO. I use it in all my handguns and in my AR-15 and have never had a problem with any of it. No FTF that was the ammo's fault and no duds that I can recall.

Most of the other 308 ammo on AmmunitionToGo.com should be pretty good stuff as well, with the following exceptions:
Avoid the Bear or Wolf stuff
I'm not familiar with the "American Tactical Imports" ammo made in Turkey.
They have some Pakistani and German surplus...again, not familiar with it. And for some reason I'm hesitant to try the Pakistani stuff... :scrutiny:

Another soon to be satisfied owner....

Anax, welcome to the club!

1. Fairly inexpensive 4-12x lighted scope. Works fine, I like the lighting for dusk shooting.
2. Sorry, I reload everything. Nicest groups (I'd tell you how small but you wouldn't believe me!) were made with 168-grain HPBT match over H4895 and standard primers. Strangely enough, not a thumper of a load, in the bottom half of the powder range.
3. Harris is on mine...I've tried other, but always have run back to Harris.

My rifle (carbine, I guess) shoots better than I'll ever hope to. Wish I'd had it when my eyes were younger and hands steadier.

Happy 10FLP owner here!

IMHO don't waste your money on stuff in the 150gr range . . . .your rifle has a 1-10 twist and will like stuff in the 168gr+ range.

I've got a Burris FullField II 3-9 on mine right now in warn "Maxima" rings. Really good mid-lower price range setup. (I think I paid $220 for the scope) I'd love to switch to a 4-14 Leupold VX-III but that's quite a few paychecks away!

Good Luck!

Thanks for all the advice guys!

I'm hoping to keep my optics cost at around 250 or so for the scope rings and base. The bipod can always wait. The Burris Fullfield seems to be exactly in my pricerange. Did you get it at midway?

So the heavier bullets are better for this rifle? Interesting. What would you guys recommend for a good cheap ammo to start on in that weight?

Edit: This seems like a steal!

I've got the same folder as you, great shooters! The guy I bought it from said Hornady SST 150 gr ammo shot great out of it, Winchester 150gr Power Point Super-X didn't shoot good. Fed GMM 168gr shoots awesome, as do my reloads. As far as the scope rail thing, pitch it in the garbage as it will rock on you. I used a sling stud in place of one of the bolts, and spacer it out to get out of the rail, much sturdier that way. I sold my folding stock, and replaced it with a Choate Ultimate Varmint stock. For $299 you can get a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 at Midway;)

You won't be sorry !!! I have owned 3 of the 10FPs --- 2 in .308 and 1 in .223. They all were "scary accurate " and I had no trouble doing "head shots" at 600 yards with both .308s.

JDGray- can you elaborate on the scope rail comment. I'm not sure I follow...

I've heard of break-in procedures with the 10FP. Some say it is good to clean the inside of the barrel between the first few shots to make sure that no burr0/etcs are present from the first few shots. Is that at all accurate?

I did the standard Shoot 1 clean for the first 10 shots then shoot two clean for 10 more than shoot 3 clean for 10 more then shoot 5 clean. Takes a few hours but that's what I did. After shooting another 50 or so on top of all that and cleaning here and there I got home and inspected the bore. Looked like a copper mine and spent onther couple of days removing copper. The Savage's are accurate but the bores are rough from the factory and the only safe way to smooth them out is shooting and proper cleaning IMO.

I'll be sure to bring my cleaning kit with me then!

This is what I've decided on for my optics on it-

DNZ Base/Rings Combination.

Burris Fullfield 2 Scope and Spotting Scope Combination. Seems like a steal!

Prvi Partisan 168gr ammunition. I figure two boxes of this stuff would be a good start to get used to the rifle and get it sighted in at the range.

Sounds like a nice set up! Bring some copper solvent with your cleaning kit. I was using Sweets 7.62 and wishing I had KG-12.

Some would say I'm making a big deal about the copper and that you don't have to remove all of it. But I feel during break in it's the only way to get the barrel smoothed out. Copper filles in all the tiny holes your hoping to lap with the bullet. If it's already gotten filled up with copper the smoothing process will be slower.

Check this out. Take a bright flashlight, make sure your rifle is unloaded and remove the bolt. shine into the muzzle end of the barrel and look at the bore. You'll most likely see a bunch of chatter marks (rings) from the button getting pulled through the the barrel. See how rough that is...

Well... You don't follow because I don't make sense:neener:

What I meant to say is the BIPOD adapter sticks to far out from the stock, to get a good tight fit when you mount it.

Well it looks like I am having some bad luck with this Savage. It appears that the barrel may not be aligned with the reciever properly. What really bugs me is that Savage says it is going to take them 3 weeks to look at the issue and fix it. I would have figured that being that this rifle is brand-new and never fired, they might put forth a little effort to fix a DOA issue faster than 3 weeks. Maybe they will, but they are saying 3 weeks is the turnaround right now.

No more Savages for me. I think I am going to stick with Marlins, Remingtons, Mossbergs, S&W, and Rugers. I've yet to have a single issue with any of those products, much less a DOA...

It appears that the barrel may not be aligned with the reciever properly
Had the same problem with a heavy barrel Savage 223 I bought about 4 or 5 years ago. I have since found others who have also had the same problem. I took mine to a local gun smith he had also seen this more than a few times with Savage bolt guns. He had to square up the receiver where the barrel mounts.

Oh and BEFORE the barrel mounting problem. I had a mount problem Savage had just changed the receiver design so that it required a different style set of mounts. When I bought my Savage I did not know this. The new style mounts were not in production yet!! :fire::banghead: It took me about 7 mounts to get the stinking mounts at the time.

To top all this off the same day I bought the new Savage 223 I bought a new stainless steel Savage Mark II bolt action 22 LR it also had issues. My Savage experience was very annoying to say the least. I just about want to puke when someone recommends a Savage to someone else.
