The Hawk 982s are hard to find nowadays

Yeah, good luck with that! I've been looking for a couple weeks now and refuse to pay what some are fetching on the online auction sites. SOG is out but expecting more, though they wouldn't give me even an approximate on when they're due in. They did say they would still sell for $179 when they do make it in and to "keep calling". So I shall.

In the meantime, I purchased a different IAC/Norinco shotgun from them, an 1897. I'm still in the market for a 982 though.

whats the opinion on these? I like them from what I've seen. Max100, is there somewhere I can see your custom Norinco jobs?

i ve seen it first hand at a FT Worth gunroom weeks ago and it was superior nice compared to names like Maverick 88. The sights are not bad either. THe price was about $250 otd which is not bad but I passed it.

I don't have any 982 in stock right now and haven't for a while. I do have the NEF Protector.

Here is a picture of last years model Hawk 982 with one of my 7+1 tube extension installed.

Max100, do you work on other IAC/Norinco models as well? I'm expecting my M97W to have the typical stiff action when I receive it (it's in transit). If it's beyond acceptable, I'd like options as to where I can send it for a little work.

I had several of the IAC 97 shotguns in stock this year and they all look excellent for the price. The stocks had a "very nice" looking wood grain. The action on them felt like typical 97 action not real smooth but not rough either. If yours is like the ones I had you will be very pleased with it.

I don't do any work on the 97 shotguns. I have only worked on one to smooth the action. I find them a pain to work on. The main thing they need is to lighten the hammer.

Thanks for that info. I was told by the folks at SOG that these 97s they have in stock are the "latest generation", so I'm under the impression they will have the genuine walnut stock rather than a walnut-stained stock of questionable wood.

I hear what you're saying about these shotguns being a pain to work on. I took note of all the small parts in the exploded diagram of the 97. It's not something I would look forward to taking apart myself.

Interesting coincidences. I just got a used 981 for $100 after looking for one for literally years at that price point- every time I found a used Hawk, there was a used 870 as cheap or cheaper nearby.

And I ordered a new IAC '97 clone (the 'period correct' version) at my favorite FFL's shop. Must be something in the water... :D

The new IAC 97 shotguns out this year have model 97/93 on the box.

That's a heck of deal on a bead sight HAWK 981 shotgun. Someone on your end is looking after you. I paid about $120 for my new Hawk 982 six years ago. That was dealer cost then.

Let us know how you like them. With all of the 870 parts you have laying around you will be able to confirm what 870 parts will work on the Hawk.

What's higher regarded, the Hawk or the Pardner Protector?

They are the same & both are very good quality. Many like the 982 because it has an 870 style receiver and GRS. I own both & like both but the 982 is my favorite. The NEF Protector is little heavier because of the extra steel in the humpback style receiver.

Yep- that's part of what I had in mind for it.

I went to Dick's today and they have the Pardner 'on sale' for $220. Not sure why MAKster's store had a better price than mine!

I didn't see any Hawks, though. I plan on getting one of them eventually.

MAKster: I thought I was maybe just being stupid, but I did figure this out. Apparently, they don't have the same sales at every store. I looked at the online circular for my store, and they only had one viewable circular, good from June-Sept. I then viewed available circulars from other Dick's locations (Texas, wherever), and some locations showed 3 different circulars (mine plus 2 others, one being the hunting gear ad you mentioned). Some locations showed 'no circulars for this location' also. I did see the ad you are talking about, but apparently that price isn't for my store. :(

Wonder if they'd price match for me?

Dick's doesn't have universal pricing.
I got my Protector for $219 from the one nearest me, but the one closer to my work had it "on sale" for $249.

Buds gun shop has them in stock as I write this, I love my Hawk and just ordered a Pardner in a 28'' config as a general use shotty.
