Pawn Shop Deals

If you have a machinist-oriented factory in town, keep an eye on the tools, etc... I picked up about $500 worth of high quality measuring equipment for under $50 a coupla years ago... Turned around, and made a few friends very happy, and got my $50 back in the process.

Pawn Shops

I live in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Here we have pawn shops everywhere because of all the military here. They have to compete with gun shops and with each other.
Usually the best deals i find are in the pawn shops.
Examples: Like new Ruger P95DC....$219.00.....Like new Remington 1100 Trap 12ga Shotgun....$300......Like new Winchester Model 1200 shotgun VR barrell...$25.00....Good condition Mossberg 500 12ga shotgun...$141.00....
Good condition Ruger 10/22....$98.00.
I love the pawn shops.
Yes they sometimes over price the merchandise. Simply tell them what you will pay.
Keep in mind you are not dealing with a reputable gun dealer. Best to know what to look for in a used firearm.

I find that pawnshops are my least productive sources of firearms deals. Have only bought one gun at one, a Iver Johnson M1 carbine at 300otd a few years ago. Gun sucked but was ammo related too. Oh and I got a Russian SKS around the same time at $179 missing bayonet. Wait I forgot about one that I my dad used to get guns at from around 1996-2000, stopped selling guns now.

He got a stainless Charter arms bullog 44spl for $110 and Mossberg 500's and Chinese SKS's from 100-125. We stupidly did not pick up Stevens 311 double barrels for the same price. They had Lee Enfield No4 Mk1 for $125. I offered $115, they said no. Gun said unsold for a year then was reduced to $110! I did not buy it out of spite eand the fact I had got one around the same time for $90.

i actually do my best work at gun shops, a lot of diligent searching will turn up deals althogh I've put many miles and spent alot on gas in the process but what else would I do with my free time, golf?

Many hobbies tend to be expensive. Only know of 2-3 pawnshops with all types of firearms and one or two that sell only long guns. One only sells handguns, go figure!

DSA reciever para style FAL with EO tech halo $355,bent piston-wouldn't cycle- about made me crap-I thought the price was for the sight-sold. Same shop remy 51 in .380, surface rust $125. Beretta A302 99% with international style chokes was $250 after 6 months of dickering with the pretty sales lady. Bersa all steel recoil 12ga $125~sweet!, Ruger stainless 90 & savage 270 with leupold vari-x 3 $450, sold the rifle to my mooching brother for $250. I frequent the shops worse than my woman frequents the mall.True story- pickup window smashed, flight bag of specialty aircraft tools stolen and later found pawned WITH MY ssn on the only item they had left, a 1/4" dial mac torque wrench, it was an inch pounds model so it is now crap. Anyhows, the guy who pawned the stuff used his actual name (what a dofus) and has a rap sheet 3 pages long. It sure helps that the honey carries a pistol on the job and can get me "in" with the local cops. That was jan 2004- found item june 2004- he was picked up for no tag/insurance/whatever else march 17 2005. He got 6 years based upon priors and has to repay me "restitution" :what: after he gets out + 3 months at the paltry sum of $25 per month to a total of $584. The stuff cost me $2100 to replace.BTW- that is the shop where I got the fal from.

I have often found that completely disregarding the price will sometimes help. The owner and I both know that MSRP means nothing in there. I'll go in, find a bin full of Craftsman sockets, pick out the ten or so that I need, and pitch them on the counter with the words "make me a price." The bin was marked 25 cents apiece, but he'll give me these dozen for two bucks. Those sockets came in to him at five bucks for the 50-piece set, so he's in 400% profit land and I just bought $20 worth of tools for $2.

I've never tried it with guns, but I suspect that it holds true. By the way, military towns are a great place to go pawn-shopping. Except Leavenworth, KS. I found a whopping one pawn shop there, and I watched the owner buy a DVD player from three guys who might as well have been wearing big day-glo orange nametags that said "BURGLAR." The thing still had part of the coax connector on it. I guess an almost complete lack of enlisted men makes for slow business at a pawn shop.

The last two posts were about stolen goods in pawnshops. Let me help to clarify some misconceptions.

All pawnbrokers are required to report everything they buy to local LE. There is usually some sort of form that asks for make, model, serial number, caliber etc. The person pawning/selling the stuff is required to show VALID ID, that info is also copied down. Records of the day's transactions are sent to local LE and they are run through NCIC databases. Items that turn out to be 'hot' are put on hold by local LE and the pawner/seller is usually investigated.

There are some exceptions to this, dishonest business owners, overworked cops, etc....but if you know all the serial numbers on all your stuff and can show them to the cops, then there is a good chance that you will get it back if it is pawned.

As far as the ssn on the torque wrench mentioned above, when I was in the business, I'd ask the guy what the number meant. If he didn't have a good answer, I'd reject the goods. Had a guy come in with some tools that had MK all over them. I asked if they were his initials, he said yes. When he gave me his Driver's License I saw that his name was something like John Smith. He INSISTED that MK were his initials. :what:

Pawn Shops

Informative thread. If I may add what my wife says is worth 1 cent. I run one of the largest pawn shops in the central Va. area. It is next to impossible to be an expert on every item brought into the shop. We try to do our best on the 100's of items we see and put into inventory but remember, were holding them for months and when they're forfeited thet then go into the display shelves. What we thought they might sell for 4 months ago might not hold true now. Specifically electronics and such. As for guns, well most pawn shop employees and owners are not gun people and sadly just don't know what to charge and the only price they see is a MSRP so thats what they go by even on a used gun.
Overhead is atrocious for a pawn shop. Everything from Jewelers Block Insurance, UL state of the art alarm systems, payroll for qualified employees, licences' from the state and city etc.. . When times are too good you have sales but no one is pawning so nothing new is going into inventory from forfeiture. If times are too bad, too many people pawning, money is going out and nobody is buying so no money is coming in. Also no one is paying interest on the loans so more is forfeited and you end up sitting on inventory you can't sell.
Also, prices fluctuate over time and we just can't keep going back and re-tag everything so the higher price gets left on it. You have to ask for the best price. Its built in to the system.

I love pawnshops- and the deals that go with them. My real complaint was against the "Victims compensation fund" administrators here in OKC.Anyone in OKC who has ever gotten a whatever HAS to pay a fee into the DA's office slush fund. I'm down about $750 in the last 15 years and have never -ever heard of any "victims" getting any $$ from this fund. I think it is going on second/third gen. spy satellites ;) corona or something like that

I made the mistake of wandering into a pawn shop nearby, I saw lorcins and hi point carbines at 350+ they didnt even let you look at the inventory, would only bring it out if you were "serious" about it. needless to say I left with my money in my pocket and a smirk on my face.

You have to be really lucky to find a deal in a Pawn shop today. They now have catlogues with price of about everything. Maybe a Mom and Pop Pawn shop but you'll have to look long and hard for good deals.

Well, after several years have passed since this thread started, I hope the original poster has found what he was looking for.
