I'm trying to find out more about pawn shop laws as it pertains to guns.

So:

Q1) Which state is the most pawn shop friendly?

Q2) Which state is the most horrible? (I feel that DC, NJ, and CA jocking for first position here.. (yes I know, DC is not a state..))

Q3) Cash and carry, or do you have to do the whole filling out the forms deal also for pawn shops, or it varies by state?

I'd like to know more, but especially about Nevada pawnshop laws.

Thanks.

The pawn shops are pretty good here in Colorado.

"Cash and carry" is, for the most part, against FEDERAL law. The form 4473 is a BATFE thing.

Pawn shops are a lot like liquor stores and strip clubs.

The local laws tend to dictate how they operate more so than the state or federal laws.

For example: In the city I live in, a pawn shop may be an FFL licensed dealer, but may not deal in hand guns.

Pawn shops that deal in firearms observe the exact same BATF regulations as any other gun dealer in ANY state.

However pawn shops have a pile of local, county and state laws piled on top of them regulating their loan and pawn policies, police reports, etc.

Over the years, I have come to not expect to find much in pawn shops except overpriced junk. Most of the people that inhabit them are too sleazy for me to want to deal with them.

Exceptions come to mind in Arlington, Va and Fayetteville, NC, but I usually avoid them unless someone tips me off that something I am looking for is in a particular pawn shop.

From the New Jersey Code.

2C:39-11. Pawnbrokers; loaning on firearms
a. Any pawnbroker who sells, offers to sell or to lend or to give away any weapon, destructive device or explosive is guilty of a crime of the third degree.

b. Any person who loans money, the security for which is any handgun, rifle or shotgun is guilty of a disorderly persons offense.

I've had good experiences with firearms and pawn shops- usually because they didn't know what they had-

I ALMOST got a Sig 210 (two barrels) for $200! The tag on it said"Tangfolio TA-90"

I asked them to hold it so I could run home and grab money- but some other lucky person bought it!:banghead:

Also- I bought a Delta Elite marked "Colt 1991" on the tag for $350:D and a few deals(steals?)

Then again- just saw a beat up raven .25 "on sale" for $129.

Seems they either price way low or way high!

My 1st Son-in-Law is a district manager of one of the larger pawn shop
chains in the country (over 300 stores). His company stopped handling any
kind of firearm several years ago because of continually increasing BATF
"oversight" (aka, BS).

The company just decided it wasn't worth the headache to deal in guns anymore, so they sold off what they had, and turned in their FFL.

He (my S-I-L) seems to think that most pawn shops will be forced out of
the gun business in the next few years. Just too much government BS.
