I would say get the VZ58. Its a milled receiver and is supposedly lighter than a stamped AK. Both have the same reliability.

However, the VZ58 won't take AK mags. It is a superior rifle IMO and the Czechs make some damn fine weapons.

Get both actually. I want a vz58 and 2 saigas (1 in 7.62 and another in 5.45, converted of course.)

the cz is so far better, and lighter than a regular ak, it is not even to be counted in the same class.
However, that darn mag problem...
get the ak.

Above dude is right, allthough a milled receiver, it has about 1/2 the parts of an ak, no protruding parts or edges, is light , handy, balanced, thin, everything you could want in a semi auto, and about 1.4 lbs less in weight.
But those dang mags! If cz could reconfig the mag well, there would be no ak's sold in america, unless they were just selling them out of the crate the way they used to do with sks's...rmember when you could buy an sks, and they would give you a tin of ammo as well?
that is how much better a cz is than a AK, but the mags are the problem.

I agree the Model 58’s the better weapon but at almost twice the price for the SGL21, I don’t know if it’s that much better.

Money no object the 58 for sure.

Kinda partial to CZ...and mags are readily avilable cheap from Czechpoint USA. :) And that's a EOTech on a vz58, yep, red dots fit.

You got to change the upper forearm from the issue wood

To a picatinny, but then no problema.

isher

All furniture is FAB/ZAHAL/Mako, (all the same stuff), quad rail forearm I never put the side rails on, folding foregrip and thier newest folding stock with cheek riser. Love it.

the mag thing does suck i would have bought one also if it took ak mags still might though they are suppose to be better than an AK

I had to vote for Vz. 58 as fsn-01 owner.

AK mags can be transformed into VZs if you dont mind losing the bold hold feature(common practise with 40rounders and 75rd. drums)..

Optic is rather hassle - side rail or some strange mount you put between reciever and stock.

I love th Vz 58. I studied both the Ak and Vz and decided on the latter. I also like the chrome barrel. I have actually shot a couple of magazines with the rifle not put together properly.. before getting a bad stove pipe and then failures to feed.

This is really interesting how close the voting is. I'm thinking most people against the VZ58 don't like that fact that mags and parts are not interchangeable with AK's. Thats really not an issue for me since I don't have either.

Good luck finding a VZ 58 for under $600 now though. Apparently when any magazines mentions that "Rifle 'X' is a great gun for the money!", dealers get the idea that this means people will buy it like hotcakes, for $200-$300 dollars more.

Used to find VZ 58's for a little over $500, at the RKShow in Overland park one dealer was asking $799.99. At those prices, the Saiga is the better buy. If for anything that they're just at $500, and they'll accept the $20 AKM magazines.

Both rifles are rated very highly among AK and Eastern-Bloc fans/collectors. But right now, your getting more bang for your buck by getting a SGL.

Hammerhead, betcha those are Century reworks. The CZ/Czechpoint one has always been much higher than $500, and worth every penny in my humble opinion. Some have had good luck with the Century rebuilds, but I have had horrible luck with anything they work on.
WASRs are out there cheap, no arguing that point, that's is the cheapest AK clone I have seen. I don't know what the price is on the SGL.

Thats what I thought too

there really isn't much argument about the Vz being the better rifle. most arguments center on the lack of interchangeability of it's mags with the AK.

but if you don't already have a stash of AK mags it becomes a moot point.

the Czechs purposely designed a different, but superior, rifle to the AK for national pride with:
1. milled receiver
2. lighter weight
3. superior accuracy
4. built-in stripper clip guide

it's like the difference between the Hyundai Excel and the Genesis

in CA legal rifle, i think the Vz 58 replaces the SKS as the Ultimate Urban Rifle

The VZ58 is a superior rifle, but you will find much more after-market support for the AK.
