I finally got to pick up my latest Black Powder pistol, okay to me it's a BP pistol and to Smith & Wesson in 1875 it was too. Even though I've got the Cap & Ball Colt bug bad, I figured that S&W deserved some equal time. She's a Uberti Model 3 Russian chambered in 44 Russian.

By the way, I had no idea how hard it was going to be to find 44 Russian brass. I finally found some at Dillon Precision in Scottsdale AZ (Top Brass). Unfortunately the head thickness is just a touch thicker than I would like. They drag just a little on the recoil shield doubler, but hopefully will fit perfect after the first firing.

The other problem I had with the Top Brass from Dillon was that they didn't finish the case edges very good. I had to knurl all of the brass so my compression die would work. We'll see how they last.

I'm gonna have to do something about the grips. Of course these pics are right out of the box, so there isn't any Ballistol on it yet.

That gun is beatiful!!!

I have been daydreaming about a schofield or russian for a long time. There's no way I can dish out $800 right now though.

With the smallish grip I'm thinking the trigger guard spur might just be useful. Besides, with it gone it wouldn't be a Russian.

By the way, does anybody know how to get the cylinder off of one of these?? My H&R just unscrews, but this one doesn't and it's going to be kind of important at bath time.

If you don't like the Russian model, get the Schofield model (no trigger guard spur)....

Oh you guys are killing me! I have coveted one of those for years. Foto Joe and junkman should be censured for not posting a "Drool Bucket Alert" before showing us those beauties! :) For penance you must post a range report w/pictures!

Indeed.

Already beaten to it, but S&W made several variants of the model (some w/o the spur).

A little research can save you time and money.

FotoJoe,

I only wish those Schofields were mine.

Here is a photo copy on how to remove your cyulinder on the Russian model....
