We were at the favorite candy store and I saw for the first time the new Walther 1911 22LR semi. This gun looks very good, tight well made nice finish but has this goofy fake 5" silencer you can put on it. Thankfully Walther supplies a barrel extension to screw on so you don't see threads, when not using the fake silencer [ as if anyone would use it ] Waited the 3 days and just picked it up. He never had a 1911 and didn`t know how to break it down so I went over to show him, what to do. The only problem is you need 2 small allen wrenches [ supplied by Walther ] to remove the slide and barrel, I thought that was a pain but everything else worked like the 1911, He hasn`t shot it yet but I`m hoping to get a chance soon because I`m in the market for a 22. The Walther looks promising all black, nice beavertail and adjustable sight, trigger felt good. All in all it looks promising. I`m hoping it doesn`t have some of the problems the P22 has been reported as having, such as the feeding and use of selective 22 ammo. Has anyone else seen this gun or own one yet? By the way the gun shop had one and that`s the one my friend bought, so they reordered 3 and those all sold out in 2 days so looks like it may be something to look at.
Edit: The gun was priced at $450 which I thought was not bad, this was a small shop so who knows it might be less somewhere.

EDIT.........WE HAVE DETERMINED THAT THIS GUN IS A "GSG" AND NOT A WALTHER

I've been impatiently waiting for these to come out. Yours is the first sighting I've heard of. Hopefully more sightings and reports will start to come in.
How was the weight? Did it "feel" like a real, steel 1911? I really liked the GSG except for how light it was.

Hi guys. Sorry about not having pictures my wife dropped the camera, I may have to get a new one.

As far as the weight goes it did feel a bit lighter I would say it`s in the 34/36 oz area. Actually the gun felt very balanced and comfortable in the hand, it did not feel as bulky as the 1911`s , now I have not had my 1911`s for years but I think I still know how they felt.

The fit and finish is better than anything I`ve seen out so far when you take the $450 price into account. The slide is very smooth all the parts fit well and the finish is all black and nice.

I`m hoping to get to shoot it soon, when my friend gets time put aside, we`re looking to put 500/1000 rounds through it of different ammo, I`ll keep everyone up to date on the outcome ASAP

If the threads are standard size I imagine a lot of folks will put a real suppressor on that 1911 if it will cycle properly.

I tried looking for a pic on the walther website and google but came up dry. I'm dying to see what they look like.

Well I was having thoughts about this gun so I called the dealer and the gun does not say Walther on it. The mix up came when we were looking at Walther guns and the fellow said "let me go get a Walther we just got in" So like a fool I guess I assumed that was what it was. He did confirm that Walther made it in Germany. Sorry for the misunderstanding.:banghead:

Now the link that "danez71" has listed in this thread on the Colt, looks to be the exact gun that he purchased, if you look it the rail gun....The gun doesn`t say Colt I forgot to write down what it said. I remember that he said Germany shooting sports or something like that. I will contact my friend later this evening to get the exact info,,,Again sorry for the misinformation but as I have it, Walther does make it in Germany, for what it`s worth.

Wait- did it say "German Sporting Guns"? That would make the GSG imported by ATI and not the Colt/Walther/Umarex gun at all.

He did confirm that Walther made it in Germany

For those not in the know, there is Walther in Ulm Germany, which is the real Walther factory and has been all along, and then there is the parent company Umarex which bought Walther a while back and has been abusing the Walther name ever since.

For example, Umarex makes decent airsoft guns, and brands them "Walther". They also make the low-end real guns (P22, PK380, etc) in a non-Ulm plant and slap on the Walther name. They also make the colt wannabe M4 thng in .22lr, and some other stuff that I can't remember at the moment, all marketed with a real brand name on it through licensing agreements.

So ... if it isn't Ulm, don't blame the historical and legitimate Walther at the Ulm plant, they're victims of marketing. This is not to say that the P22/PK380 aren't decent guns, they're just not made by the Ulm plant or to Ulm standards, or from Ulm materials with Ulm QA. They do benefit from getting copied ergonomics from Ulm-made guns, which is a plus for those of us who equate Walther with good ergonomics (someone in the Ulm R&D department has hands identical to mine or something).

Now, to the UMAREX 1911, is it a clone of the GSG model, is it the GSG model with a Colt banner slapped on, is it something different, and is it compatible with other guns' magazines?
Because I might spring for it if it took a mag I already have (P22) or if someone would finally get their act together and make a compact (officer's size) 1911 in .22 cheaper than a conversion kit.

Now, to the UMAREX 1911, is it a clone of the GSG model, is it the GSG model with a Colt banner slapped on, is it something different...

That's really where my curiosity lies with this offering. I've got a Walther P99 URM and have absolutely no qualms about their quality. My initial impressions and hopes where that this was a newly engineered platform approved under Colt license.

The compatability with "other" magazines is of interest, but not my primary concern. To the OP- the construction of the mag(s) might steer us into figuring out what your buddy has.

What I want, and am hoping for, is a .22 1911 that closely approximates the "feel in hand" of a "real steel" 1911 (this is where the GSG fell short for me), including the coveted 1911 SA trigger feel. I can deal with some feeding issues, as this is obvoiusly not am SD pistol, but a jammomatic is a no-go. I want a good trainer pistol for my 1911s, and the option to screw on my suppressor for backyard action is the driving force behind this offering for me.

That Colt has some significant differences from the GSG. Different hammer, trigger, grips, sights, magazine. But I've never handled the Colt, so I can't say any more than that.

I love my GSG.. and I'll admit it's a smiggen lighter than most 1911s, it's got a good sturdy, "real 1911" feel to it (to me). Best .22 1911 that's come along in my opinion.

Here's the GSG (just looking for an excuse to share the pics ;))

Here's some other info from the Umarex USA site.
Umarex USA offers world-class products for multiple product categories including..... (edited - alot of stuff not pertanent to this thread) ..... and small bore firearms including Colt .22 Tactical Rimfire rifles and 1911 pistols, HK .22 rifles, and RWS premium .22 rimfire ammunition

And of course Umarex also makes the Walther P22 .22lr

Hopefully they stay away from the buckmark and Mk?. :(

Thanks guys for being so kind, I hate to give incorrect info and I hate to read it!!!!! I went over to my friends house last night and confirmed, he has a GSG. After reading bigfatdaves and Danez71 posts there sure seems to be issues going forward on many different guns coming from Germany

I guess the gun dealer was a bit loose with how he described the GSG but it didn`t take anything away from me feeling that it`s a good looking, good feeling gun. I found another forum [1911forum] that has a long thread on the GSG and they discuss some of the minor problems but all that own the GSG feel it is a great gun and one that will stay with them.

I have been busy looking for cheaper prices and at gunbroker.com I have found guns from $300 so it looks like my friend paid a bit to much for his, at anywhere close to $300 I`m a buyer for sure.

Well dang :(. I'm really anxious to see what Umarex/Colt comes out with. They were supposed to be available starting in November and I thought you'd found the first one I'd heard of.
Most folks seem to really like their GSGs, I'll bet your friend will too. Good that you found the 1911 forum. The ATI importer posts on that thread and seems to take care of folks.

Magoo......I have just realized that Umerax/Colt will have one also, so here I go again, like you, I would like to see it, hold it and take my glasses with so I know what it is haha. I have newly returned to guns, after selling off most of my guns 10 years ago. Outside of having a few shotguns and a SA XD and a Sig/ Hammerli 22lr Trailside [ of coarse the Sig is my wife's gun] the safe is bare.

My first new purchase is going to be a 22lr semi and a 1911 would be nice. Now again I`m a bit unsure because the Colt is not yet available. At first I was thinking of a 1911 with a 22 conversion but after seeing the GSG I decided to not go 1911 with a conversion mainly because I don`t want to shoot 45`s any more. So I too would like to see the Colt but I`m getting anxious to get something. The Buck Mark and Rugar`s are nice also.

We've talked about these things in a couple other threads, but I just want to point them out here for anyone considering buying the GSG 1911 (copied from my post on another forum).

Here's a few quirks about it:
- it's picky about ammo, but in my experience, all 22 semis are. But i've had great success with Federal bulk and CCI minimags.
- The pot metal barrel bushing is garbage. A lot of people have had them break (which, if you're at a public range, likely means you lose the recoil spring too). ATI and/or GSG are starting, or planning to start, putting steel barrel bushings on them. If you get one with the cheap pot metal, though, don't fret. You have two excellent choices: 1) Contact ATI and they'll send you a steel replacement. I got a replacement in a few days for free and with zero fuss (mine never broke, by the way, i just wanted to play it safe). Or 2) you can just put any ol' 1911 barrel bushing on there. It'll fit just fine.
- The recoil cachedisk thing (or whatever they're called) that comes with it will wear out after a few thousand rounds. But a rubber washer works fine as a replacement.
- To field strip it, you have to take out a hex screw. Also (not really a quirk, just FYI) the recoil spring has a tapered end, so make reassembling, be sure you put it back with the wider end toward the muzzle.

This may sound like a lot of complaining or something - but it's not. It's easy to see the positive aspects of it just by handling one at the store.. so to be fair I want to point out some of the annoyances you won't know until after you buy it.

I (knowingly) overpaid for mine, a little over $400, on an impulse buy at a local overpriced shop. But even at the higher cost, I've found it to be worth it. Feels solid in the hands, shoots straighter than I do, great stock sights, very few failures once you find some ammo it likes. Make no mistake though - this isn't your $1000 kimber. ;) But for a .22 range toy, it doesn't get much better.
