Here's some pics of mine at todays range day. We had various firearms to sort out. All went well
This 99e has been in the making for 4~5 years. Bought as beat to death "behind the seat" ranch gun off a local dairy farmer, I set about making it more to my liking.
Did the wood refinish myself including gluing many hair line cracks with epoxy. Then many coats of True Oil. The metal was refinished by Arizona Response Systems in a finish called Metacol (a Beretta invention) - highly recommended.
The scope is a Nikon Pro-Staff 3x9 in vertically split "rings" on Weaver bases (came with the gun).
The first pic is Skyhorse shooting it during function testing. By that time we had a stiff wind quartering from R to L toward us. The second is me hunkered down for some scope adjusting "placement". The third is the last target of the day after final scope adjustments. The fourth is the range from the bench.
My is a 250/3000 take down from 1923, at least that is what came up when I ran the serial number. They are wonderful rifles, in you haven't got to shoot one, you need to. Some day I hope to have the 300 savage 99 that I shot my first deer with, it was given to my older sister who never liked hunting, so I ended up starting out with it before moving up to bolt guns.
Hi Gang
Newbe here with a 99 take down model. I think that would be a "B" model. I am interested in finding out its age can anyone help me do that. I saw a 99 take down on Gun Broker with a serial # of 355xxx and he said that was 1931. My serial # is 252xxx.
The gun has been refinished and is in .300 Savage. Plus someone put a recoil pad on it. I suppose its not a true collector gun but I am proud of it. Forgot to mention it has a Marble peep sight.
1917 Sav 99 250-3000 take down model. I got it 3 or 4 years ago for $175 at a gun show. The bore looks like it saw some corrosive primers.
I drilled and tapped holes in the same spots that Savage later put in 99s.
I put a $75 Shilen 6mmPPC stainless select match take off barrel from EBAY on it and reamed it out to 6mmBR. I shoot it single shot when that barrel is on it.
I have had a .308, '99C since I had my Dad pick one up for me while I was in 'Nam. Originally I had a Weaver 4X,the metal butt plate and was stocked for iron sights.'Kicked like a mule! I put a recoil pad on it and a raised leather cheek piece;which made a major difference.Later a friend made a nice wood butt stock with raised cheek piece and the 4X was replaced by a 3X Weaver Widefield after I had a buck get up to close!
In the ensuing years the rifle has accounted for Blacktail,Whitetail and Mule deer from 5 paces to 300 yds.Wild pig, elk, a Shiras moose, black bear and antelope have fallen to this rifle. I have used mostly 165grn.handloads with the Barnes X bullet being my favorite. Although I have other rifles ,this one would have been the only one I really "needed". It is very fast handling and consistently puts 3 shots under 1.5"@100yds.
Note: I've always thought one of these re-barreled to .260 Remington would be sweet.(Wish Savage would bring the '99 back and add this caliber to the line up.)
Don't give any gunsmithing tips, you might get completely roasted over the campfire.Even if the tip came from one of the most respected and best known gunsmiths known.
