I will soon have in hand an older 99 (early brass rotary mag) and a 116 ss without accutrigger for $630 total. Both are scoped, but cheaply. Mostly, its the 99 that will need a new 4x Weaver to pass muster.
I will hunt elk in AZ with both, but the 99 is primarily my nostalgia gun (copy of my dad's own savage)
My question is, anyone have a fave factory ammo choice for target and/or for hunting with either of these?
Anyone care to share hand load recipes for the 99 in .300 Savage?
I realize I'll have to tweak any recommendations to my specific rifles, but just looking for any known good performers.

I covered the 99 alright, but I sure did miss the 116 in .30-06.
Kinda important, eh? thanks ;)

My 99 is 308W. I would say reload up for it. Check the manuals 300 Savage data. post this question inthe relaoding section should get you better answers. My preference is loads of IMR 3031 and 150 gr Hornady spire points.
For 30-06 I like IMR 4350 and 180gr.

Great idea on posting up reloading questions in the reloading forum. Whoda thunk it? Thanks

They followed me home today, finally. I had them on layaway awaiting $$.

New question: Any online source avail. that details lightening the 116's existing non-Accutrigger trigger? I know I can drop in a new one, just looking to see if this is doable for the average gun butcherer. I'd like it down to no lower than 2.5 lbs, as it's gonna be my main meat-getter.

I have a Model 99R in .300 Savage. When it comes to factory loads for deer, I find that the 150 Grainers work best.

Here's some data for your 300 Savage.

300 Savage

150Gr-------------------------------IMR-4064

Start at 36.6 and work up. data for IB, SST, SP, and BTSP.

Max charge---------------------44.0 GR

Velocity--------------------------2800 FPS

Energy---------------------------2612 Ft LB

Barrel length--------------------22.0 Inch

COAL------------------------------2.600

This load was developed using Hornady bullets.
In terms of power, the developer considers this a MAXIMUM load.
The velocity measurement is by chronograph.
Remington cases and Federal 210 primers were used in development.

Wow, I just revisited this post...
Thanks for the continued help.
On the 116, I've already adjusted the non-accutrigger trigger to 2.75-3 lbs, sighted it for 1 1/2" high at 100 yds, and am looking for a good Pachmayr recoil pad to make range days more comfortable.
The 99 will just need a nice leather sling, Weaver scope, and some quality time with tung oil to be complete for me.
