AR-15 Advice needed

I would not get a piston set up until the problem of bolt tilt is addressed. Until then you should stick with the original design. Also I would look at BCM. They are the same quality as Colt with a much wider selection of upper configurations. You should look at a mid length system as they are becoming standard if you ask me. Really I cannot see a reason for a carbine gas system over a mid length.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't 3-gun require a "tactical-type" carbine and NRA Highpower require a full size fixed stock 20" barrel A2 or A4 rifle for participation? Seems to me you'd need two different ARs.

You could get a fixed stock 20" rifle, and a carbine upper. The carbine would be "old school" ;) with the fixed stock, but it would work.

I never seen any formal rules for any club level event. Any rifle will do for any 3 gun event I've seen. I've seen all types from hardcore Ar15's with all the trimmings to completely obsolete M1's. If you can hit the target at the end of the range then you can hit the target at the end of the range.

What's NRA highpower?:uhoh:

That was the other question that's on my mind. I don't ever envision myself doing any close quarter work. I only have experience with iron sights but I know on this new gun I will install some form of optic. It's hard to decide because everything must be mail ordered. It seems none of the gun stores in my area stock anything other than low grade hunting stuff. I understand that's what they sell but it makes it hard to choose an optic. I like the Acog and I like the EOtech. I know from my experience competition shooting to not buy a 1500 dollar rifle and put a 100 dollar scope on it. Most of my long rifles have scopes that equal or exceed the value of the gun itself. I do plan on putting the finest optic I can on the Colt in the 700-1000 dollar range. I think I'm leaning towards a 3x Acog but I would appreciate any first hand advice.

Also look into the 1-4x Nightforce or Trijicon Accupoint Larue mount combos. Glass as good as the ACOG but a bit more adaptable with both more and less magnification. I like finely adjustable stocks like the Magpul UBR when using scopes.

Or even 2.5-10x

3Gun doesn't require anything. There are usually 3 or more divisions based on the configuration of the AR. The most popular division is called "Tactical" and that just means you have one optical sight.
