worth the price? i dunno nothing about 1911's other than internet stuff. Is it worth the extra money for the scandium frame? I do like light wieght stuff but are they that much lighter? anythoughts?

worth the price?

As far as I'm concerned Smith&Wesson makes one of the finest 1911s on the market. And I'm not just saying that because I got one. The scandium models are light as aluminum but extremely strong. So strong that scandium is capable of standing up to the operating pressure of magnum cartridges used in some of there revolvers. Yes ,worth the price.

I am wondering the same thing, the ones I have handled seemed pretty tight, and well made. I was looking at one of the 1911's with the adjustable target sights, for around 1100 or 1200 Washingtons. With some of the other hi quality 1911" around, are the Smiths a good value for the money spent?

have several colt's and a couple of RIA's

on the opposite side of the cost spectrum are Rock Islands. how do they compare? just good with out the pretty finish? or not even same ball park?

The S&W E series was really a step up for the S&W 1911s with the inclusion of the optimized extractor formerly used only on the Performance Center 1911s. I like the chemical inclusion of Scadium in their Aluminum alloy for the frames and understand it adds elasticity...but it wasn't a deal breaker when I brought my 1911Sc (model prior to the PD)...the weight difference is really noticeable at the end of a day of carrying.

They really aren't at opposite ends of the spectrum. The S&Ws inhabit the middle ground in production 1911 pricing, while the Rock Island guns are at the entry level

I've had this for about 3 months now and I like it a lot. This my only 1911 atm.

I have about 1200 rounds thru it now.
I have mostly been shooting 230g wwb FMJ with Golden Sabres JHP for an SD load but have used FMC , corbon, hornady, etc.
I have never had a fte, ftc or ftf, but I have had the grip safety give me a little trouble occasionally after I have shot 50 or so, I haven't figured out if it is me or the safety yet. My hands get pretty sweaty and I'm 58 with arthritis.
I have some VZ G10 grips coming to see if that helps.

When considering gun weight keep in mind the balance factor. Making the frame from a lightweight alloy makes the gun top heavy. A solid steel 1911 feels much different than an alloy frame 1911 when fired. And as you empty the magazine the gun becomes more and more unbalanced. For my money I prefer the heavier version, and yes, I have lugged them around all day for years. With a good belt and holster rig it is not really as much of a problem that some folks make it out to be. A gun that bounces empty cases off your head needs to be repaired. The cases need to go out to the side. If the slide port is knocking cases back in your face it's only a matter of time until a case won't make it out the port and will jam on you. That would be very bad. Grip safeties can be adjusted to release with very little movement or pressure. If you have to chicken choke it to make it release it's out of spec. The gun should fire when you need it to fire even with a less than perfect grip.

OK, I couldn't get a straight answer from the smith ( he quit last week) at the lgs where I bought it.
I'll send it in.

My only hang up with the "E" series is this:

I like the "round butt" but I also like the "rail" and they dont have a model with both features, or do they?
