Took both of my P-64's out this morning. Wanted to try a variety of ammo through them and ensure they're ready for CC duties. One of them functioned flawlessly with everything, and didn't have the issue where 6+1 causes a jam. Sweet.

However, the other... I never even got to fire. Every time I tried to chamber a round, this bizarre 3 point jam happened. It's like the round on top jammed into the roof of the barrel, while the round below that has nosedived. It was very difficult to un-jam, as it basically requires the slide to be pulled all the way back while you pull the mag release. After the first time it happened, I thought it was a fluke, and that if I try again with another mag, it couldn't possible happen again. Nope. Jammed right up the same way again.

Here's a pic of it. Any ideas on what in the blue frak is causing this? What stinks is that it's my pretty p-64 that's doing this! The "worn" one from AIM that has like 30% of the original bluing intact is the one that functions flawlessly.

Only mods to these are the spring swaps (18lb hammer spring, max weight recoil spring).

Also ruining my day out was that my P-11 sucks. Man do I need a lot of practice with that trigger. Was going to use it as a car gun, but I don't see the point in spending hundreds on ammo just to get proficient with that gun, when I can instead use another relatively cheap gun that I can shoot just fine as is. Will probably sell.

Only thing good today was my EMP. But it's always good. It once again passed the "shoot what's been loaded in it for carry, changing or unloading nothing before shooting" test.

Should've stayed home. :(

p.s. DCR, go have intercourse with yourself

This might be too simple, but try inspecting and polishing the feed ramp. Look for nicks and dents. And try it with the first recoil spring, too. I had the same problem with a Makarov and refinishing the ramp fixed it. Good luck. The guy at the boxotruth site has a section where he polishes a ramp in a p-64.

What type of ammo were you using? My P64 doesn't like silver-bear hollow point. I'd get about jam a box with it and they looked like yours, however it is fine with ball ammo.

I'll take reliability over questionable expansion any day, so I shot off all the hollow point at the range and carry ball.

Have you function-fired this pistol before your modifications? At this point, I'd put my money on the heavier spring with this particular pistol.

I vaguely remember reading malfunctions with double feeds involving the extractor though for the life of me I can't see how. If all other attempts fail, maybe try swapping the slides as a last resort.

I'd also recommend checking the magazine to see if there are any bends or dings that shouldn't be there.

It was function tested before. The guys on the P-64 forum pointed to the recoil spring, saying that I need to sand the ends flat, as they are flat on the originals. One guy pointed out that he had the very same problem with his P-64 until he sanded the ends of the new recoil spring flat.

So, I shall try this and report back.

Wow, I read the springs had to be sanded/flatten just to get the pistol back together again. I guess you really had your hands full with that project.

Yes, let us know if this was the problem!

My guess is the ammo, when we shoot that cheap steel cased crap through ours it always has problems.

I had no problems getting either P-64 back together without sanding the springs, and as I said, one of them works 100% without having sanded them. The trigger of that one also feels a little different.

Go figure.

I've always used the bench grinder to flatten the Wolff springs to match the OEM look. Very easy to do just go easy, you'll need a little finesse. ;)

Let us know when you get things figured out.
