Problem with my P-64

So I got new recoil springs for my p-64's. Put them both together.

Now, one of them is kind of messed up. I cannot get the safety to disengage. I can get the safety to about halfway to fire before it simply stops and no amount of force with my thumb can get it to go further. I can move it back to safe. I can rack the slide although the hammer automatically decocks when I let the slide go back into battery.

Anyone have any idea what may be going on?? Not sure what I may have screwed up or how to fix it.

My other P-64 was reassembled the exact same way I believe and works just fine as it did when I got it.

OK, here are some pics that may help.

The good one is on the left, messed up one on the right.

From the pics, it looks like your firing pin is stuck forward.

I don't know the condition of your pistol, and can't tell if the FP is damaged at all.

When I got my P-64, I removed the FP and safety bolt for cleaning and inspection, it's kind of a pain, but if you can budge that FP, here's how to do it:

Remove the slide.

Press the FP all the way forward (I use a wooden skewer stick as a pusher).

Remove the safety block to the left by rotating back an forth, while levering it from underneath (I used a brass pick to help work it out to the left). There's a fairly stiff spring and plunger in the safety block that will come out when the safety is half way out. Remove these.

The Safety Block will now come out (keep FP depressed.

When the Safety block is out, the FP can be removed for inspection and cleaning.

I shortened the safety detent spring just a bit before re-assembly, as it was incredibly stiff beforehand. I only use very light lube in this area to avoid gooey build up from firing.

Good luck.

OK, I think I found out what was wrong... It took some "home gunsmithing" to get it to get off of safe. The right side of the safety appears to be cracked and broken. You might be able to just barely see it in one of the photos. I will need a replacement safety though now it would seem. Anyone know where I can get one?

That's a drag. You should try to return it from whoever you got it from; defective gun, bad safety. Changing out a recoil spring does not involve anything more than a basic field-strip. They sold you a broken gun. You can about forget getting that safety part.

Well, it's a surplus gun. It kind of goes with the territory... There has to be a place to get a replacement part from though.

There's a site called the unofficial p-64 resource or such that might be of help to you.

AS I have said many times, fooling around with gun springs can cause many problems. The loaded chamber indicator pin does not seem to be positioned correctly. There is a U shaped keeper for the spring under the safety de-cocker drum they may have jumped out of place.

Wolf replacement recoil springs have to be ground flat on both ends to fit in the very close tolerances. There is something out of alignment in that pistol that's all.

If your safety/firing pin was installed incorrectly, forcing it may have broken it.
Good thing is that there seems to be plenty of parts.

No, but installing parts wrong can, something as simple putting the cam pin BEHIND the link and managing fire a round will bugger a gun 3 ways from friday.

Rocky Mtn, you sure you can't return the gun? As useful as little-death's information was, and from personal experience I can tell you that getting gun parts out of Poland can be tricky, did you use a c.c, like amex, for the deal? If not, use it next time if you can. I hate all banks, ect, but those boys really do jump on bad deals. For the fifty or sixty bucks, including your new spring, you're into it now maybe youshould cop anotherpistol. You can never have too many, yes? The parts plus what you have now? And another holster and two mags? (almost 20.00 bucks each retail) Go for it. Money well spent.

527, the way many of these guns complicated safeties are broken, is in fact exactly like what I said, if it's put back together wrong, then forced the leg breaks off.
