and I don't know if anybody makes one like it, or I will have to build it. I am looking for a scoped 5.56 rifle to ride in the truck for coyotes and the like.

I want a collapsible stock lower, an A4 upper. On the upper, I think I want a full rifle length aluminum free float tube. I am not sure that the barrel that I want is available, but I figure somebody here might know. I would like a medium weight stainless barrel, preferrably with a flash suppressor. I know it would look odd with the free float tube basically running to the end of the barrel, but I would like it to cover the majority of the barrel, if a full length float tube is not too long to cover a shorty barrel.

While I have never built an AR, that may be what I have to do to get this configuration. Does anyone know of any similar pre-built rifles?

Something like this?

Thats the 6.8 I just built for a brush gun to hunt deer & hogs. If thats what you are looking for, I can send you a parts breakdown with vendors, and recommendation for a good barrel.

the barrel shrouds are relatively easy to change, so i would choose a gun based on the rest of your criteria. get one with a low profile gas block so the shroud can go over it. a carbine w/ at 14.5 barrel and pinned/welded flash hider would be your shortest barrel without a stamp. the midwest rail for a rifle length nearly covers the entire barrel of a carbine, as do others

MikeRussell, can you show the other side.
Heck, post the parts breakdown here anyway.
I like that setup and am looking to build a "tuber" with an ace stock and a full length tube like that, only I like an Ergo grip.

Front to back:
-.308/6.8 A2 style flash hider
-ARP 1:11 5R 16in midlength barrel
-Troy VTAC 13in FF handguard
-YHM LoPro gas block
-PSA upper & lower receivers
-Magpul MOE+ grip
-PSA LPK
-ARP "superbolt" on a M16 BCG
-Magpul CTR stock
-scope mount is a gunshow special, but it works well & returns to zero when unmounted & remounted on my wife's 6.8, so I figured I'd try it on mine

My wife's rifle (going to replace the tube with a rifle length soon)...

Hers is an Essential Arms lower receiver with a Stag LPK, Ergo grip, CAA stock (going to a CTR on hers too soon), and a Bushmaster 6.8 carbine upper with Troy lopro gas block and carbine length Model 1 ff tube.

I bet you could spec that out through Rock river... if you have a phone contact or a dealer with one. daniel defense makes a carbine with a rail that goes forward of the sight

Troy industries (and a few others) make 15" float rails.

For a precision truck gun (that is what you want?) The easy route is:
http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-SS410-16-Mid-Length-Upper-Receiver-Group-p/bcm-urg-mid16%20ss410%20vtrx13.htm

Or a built equivalent. Either the barrels on BCM's website or a barrel from Rainier Arms (they sell many 16" stainless barrels of great quality) will give you MOA accuracy with a good piece of glass and a good shooter behind the gun (and good ammo) all the way out the 500 yards, maybe even more if you do your part. Of course, for 'yotes and such, you don't even need that level of precision; your target is larger than the X-ring of a national match target.

If you build, you'll find you can get exactly what you want (barrel, float tube, upper receiver, muzzle device, gas system, BCG) but the tools required add up to about $150 total.

I'd advise an A5 stock system or a fixed (A1/A2 length) stock of some sort, I don't like the standard collapsible stock (love the A5 system though, such a great system).

Look at the Geissele trigger offerings, and many companies make different spring kits, coated triggers, etc. that will offer good performance.

I'd advise against a billet upper, I think that there is nothing wrong with standard forged upper receivers. But the billet ones may offer some increase in theoretical accuracy; can you shoot that well, is the question? A very personal question, you decide if the extra money will make a difference.

Billet makers claim they can cut billet receivers to more accurately as the flat side of the billet are easier to line up in their machine tools. However, they have to be heavier to achieve the same level of strength and stiffness as a forged receiver. Billets are often cut from 6061 while forgings are made of 7075 which is a stronger alloy.

You can buy an upper sans handguard, cut down the FSB and add any length free float type forearm you desire. Done and done.

Mine has a 20" barrel with a rifle length FF tube, but that's what I wanted

I dont know of any factory free floated dissipators with stainless barrels. I've built similar rifles with brownells AR15 builder tool and my DPMS sportical is almost exactly what you described minus the stainless barrel and would definitely recommend it as a coyote/deer rifle. I would say you probably have to build it but they are fun designs.

Mike, the rifle you show is pretty close, only I don't want a full rifle length, as the 16" is handier in a vehicle. I don't want any rails on it, though. The Rock River Coyote rifle is close too, but I want a shorter barrel with the long free float tube. This will help protect the barrel while in odd shooting positions. Thanks for all the help so far.

Bernie, both rifles I showed pics of are 16in bbls. The first has a rifle length (13in) free float, the second with a carbine length tube.

Sorry for the confusion on my part Mike, that is what I am looking for then! I guess the longer tube made the barrel look longer. Thanks.

Yes, it's a bit deceiving looking at it in pics with no size reference. In my 2nd post on this thread, I laid out the parts I used to build it.

If you are wanting a SS .223/5.56 barrel, I highly recommend Wilson Combat. Their barrels usually run about $250.

If you aren't dead set on a SS barrel, then I recommend ARP (AR15 Performance). Barrels from them are about $190.

Either one will custom build a complete upper for you as well.

Some different length FF tubes from Troy-
