1911 Recoil

My SW1911 has very little perceived recoil, to me anyways, when compared to plastic nines (yes, I have one), and even the BHP.
Frame weight does come into play, besides the ballistic props.

Look, I'm not trying to tick anyone off. We all have our opinions and tastes. I have trained in three different law enforcement agencies over the past 12 years and used a variety of pistols. I personally shoot best with a Beretta 9mm even though it's like carrying around a boat anchor (weight + size). It really comes down to what you are confident with and can shoot well. Any quality defensive handgun from a reputable maker will get the job done if the shooter does his part. Don't get me wrong I do like the 1911 they have a great feel to them. I just prefer the lighter weight and trigger system from glock. Plus if your glock gets beat up and scratched it doesn't really matter because it looked like crap to start with........Ain't America a great place where we can all own just about whatever kinda gun we won't and the rest of the world can stick it..............

Greetings,

I have a CZ75 SA in .40 and have owned a Glock 22 and Beretta Centurain in .40. Have also shot a SigPro 40, Sig 226, 229, & 239 in 40, Glock 23 & 24C. Also have a SA Loaded 1911 in .45. Out of all the pistols mentioned the Glock 23 recoiled the hardest, then the Glock 22. The Beretta was next, then the Sig 239. After that, the .40 out of medium to larger metal guns is not that bad to shoot from a recoil perspective. IMHO, the Sig 229, 226 and CZ have great recoil characteristics for the .40. Also should note that the Glock 24C was a pussycat to shoot. Would like to try a Glock 35 sometime. Compared to the 1911, I'd have to agree with the previous posters that out of a 1911, the .45 recoil feels less severe than the .40. As others have already said, the .40 definitely feels more snappy. Would be interesting to fire a Glock 21 to compare to the 1911. I also have an HK USPF in .45, and the recoil feels a little less compared to the 1911.

Hope this helps.

Ken

Recoil is to a certain extent subjective. A handgun is a purchase that your going to keep for years and may need to depend upon in the most dire of circumstances.

Go find a range that does rentals, or a friend in the area that has one, and shoot a 1911 side by side with your Glock. Make a road trip if needed.

Isn't it important enough to find out up front?

I have a G21 and four 1911's. The G21 has surprisingly light recoil. Its large grip and the polymer frame absorb much of the recoil. For a 45 so light in weight, its surprising. I'd say I feel less recoil with that gun than with any of my 1911's, though not by a huge margin.

Recently took a trip to the range w/ friends--shot a sig 232? .380 WAY more snappy and less comfortable than my full size Kimber .45 AND friend's sig 2340 .40.

I own many guns and have owned several more including 1911s, CZs/EAAs, Glocks and Sigs in 9mm, 40 and 45. I grew up shooting 1911s and being told how great the 1911 platform was and how the 45ACP was the only handgun cartridge (save 357, 41 and 44 Magnums) worth shooting at a bad guy. I now daily carry a little 9mm Kahr.

On recoil, as most here have said, the 1911s have a slower pushy type of recoil as opposed to the snappier recoil of the .40, esp. when firing the hottest loads and the lightest bullets from the smallest guns. Ergonomics go a long way. My small-framed wife can shoot a 1911 with 200 Gr +P Gold Dots just as well as a G23 with 165 Gr Gold Dots. Mas Ayoob's 7 year old (at the time) daughter out-shot almost all the other shooters in the under 15 YO category using a 1911 with 230 Gr ball ammo. I mean this in the least sexist manner possible but if a 7 year old girl can shoot a 1911 with ball ammo just fine, any self-respecting, healthy grown male should not have any reservations.

Between the platforms, I prefer shooting the 1911s for fun and admire their appearance more than Glocks, but I have nothing at all against Glocks other than a slight reservation of shooting .40 reloads. For 1911s, I've shot one Defender and probably five Officer models. I prefer the full size boys and would suggest something like that as a first 1911 preferably a blued new rollmark Colt. If buying a used Officer model, I'd do so under the very clearly-stated provision that if it fails more than three times in fifty rounds of shooting Winchester or S&B 230 Gr ball ammo, they'll take it back for a full refund.

Bottom line... get the

Glock with a better trigger system than a 1911? On what planet? The planet Numbfinger? Not to mention that the one thing the FBI managed to BREAK when testing the Glock was the trigger mechanism... :D

I have a Glock 30 and a full size Kimber - the little Glock definitely recoils more than the 1911 with the same reload (185gr Rem JHP, 5.7 grains W231). I don't know why this is and it certainly won't help clear up the question you've asked but that's the way it is here - good luck

Perception of recoil.

Heck I shoot 10mm out of Delta Elite, weak handed. Of course I also shoot the .454 Casull out of a 7.5" Ruger weak handed. I don't find it a problem. Running out of ammo or time - now that is a problem.

Serious Fun! :D

The officers size guns are MUCH snappier than the full size. After shooting my Springfiled Ultra Compact, my Colt 5" gun feels really slow, I can actually feel the slide returning to battery and the barrel relocking. There is a big difference in how the guns recoil. The officers is fast and snappy with a more flip to it. The govt is a slower more gentle rocking sensation.

Glad I went with a .40 now.....seems after shooting the .40 a while I should be prepared for my .45 here in the near future........even the ole lady loves shooting my .40.
