Lee turret as a single stage question.

I use mine auto-index for .223, but not for .308, and I use it auto-index for all pistol rounds. The difference for me is I weigh each charge for my .308 rounds since I am trying to maximize for accuracy. If/when I had a semi in .308 platform I would probably auto-index, assuming I could get a large enough charge with my Lee Pro Auto Disk.

My question is, does the press function well as a single stage?

Mine certainly does! I have a turret plate set up with .44 magnum dies and another for .38spl/.357. I expect that pretty soon I'll have separate turret/die sets for the .38 and the .357.

I removed the indexer rod as soon as I unpacked it since my method of work is to do the separate operations in batches.

I have a Dillon 650 with case feeder, a Lyman, Lee Classic, and an old Rock Chucker.

You can really crank out ammo with the 650, but they are pricey and do take some tinkering (I have overhauled mine twice in 20 years). It's a good machine and Dillon stands behind their product even if you are not the first owner.

The Classic I use just like bogon48 describes and it works just fine that way. Will it last as long as the Dillon.......probably not, but it's not going to break the bank either and like someone else mentioned you're going to need other stuff........lots of other stuff.

Buy a good scale, I prefer a beam scale and a good powder dispenser (I like the Lyman #55).

For the record .......I still use the machine I learned on the most (that old 70's vintage Rock Chucker). - gene

I agree with all of the previous comments and would like to make one more point. A very often overlooked feature on presses is the Top-Dead-Center feature. It ensures that you'll be very consistent with the ram stroke. This will definitely show up on you Overall Cartridge Lengths. Even if the turret flexes, the Top-Dead-Center feature will ensure a very precise stopping point with each stroke of the press. It's why I use a REDDING single stage and why I bought a LEE Classic Turret. ;)
