Having seen some fairly nice SKS stocks and kits. I am curious to see people's builds, from stock to bullpupped. Anyone run the Timbersmith thumbhole stock? Do any of the new stocks retain the bayonet?

Got it for $300 from Classic Firearms about a year and 1/2 ago. 1970s Yugo 59/66 in excellent, almost like new condition.

I don't plan on doing anything to it besides shooting it though.

I have shot the two with scopes.
I have not shot any of them in 15 years.

I paid $85 ea to AIM for the Yugos.
The Albanians were cheaper from AIM, but not as good.
I paid $150 for the Russian on a forum.
I was surprised that I own a Chinese.

First quarter of 1950 Tula, Russian SKS...

c7b9782b.jpg

It has the spring loaded firing pin which was discontinued in the 2nd quarter of 1950. So it was built in the first six months of SKS production.

here is my $125 Yugo. I stripped the stock and dyed it ebony and shot all the metal parts with wolf gray Duracoat. I actually love this SKS and am thinking about getting it a buddy.

A couple of Bubb'a along with a few not pictured yet

Here are a pair of "Bubba" SKS along with a few not pictured in this thread yet.

From the top:

Chinese "Paratrooper". Made for the US market, about 1/2" off the gas tube and 4" off the barrel.

Chinese SKS-M. Takes AK mags and has the ugly "thumbhole" stock, the regular stocked ones are worth more. Basically the "Paratrooper" factory modified to take AK mags.

Bubba's "Dragunov". None of the numbers match, I paid ~$100 which was about a $25 premium for the scope and mount (already installed). Works surprisingly well, its a Mosin PU style 4x20 scope with the same type bulky side mount. Other scope mounting systems I'd tried were junk. The original stock was really rough and I only used it to serve as a guide for inletting the plastic stock for the scope mount.

Bubba's "Tactical. Nice rifle with all numbers matching except for the stock which was pretty rough. The cheap red dot mounted on the Tapco gas tube handguard works well enough given I can barely hit the paper with the stock SKS irons and these old eyeballs.

SKS-D. Most valuable of the lot, All the numbers match, but the gas tube wood is a very poor color match to the stock. It's the only one I'd ever seen for sale and I jumped on it for the princely sum of $165 which was about double the typical SKS back then.

If you actually plan to do much shooting with them, for the average US sized guy the Bubba's are a lot more comfortable and have their charm.

I've never shot any but the Bubba's, the rest have been in the back of the safe for 20+ years, Thought I'd dig them out and refresh the oil wipe down after taking the photo.

This SKS belonged to be grandfather, who gave it to my father a few years ago. He was a civilian working for DARPA in South Vietnam during the war. Anyway, he was presented this SKS (captured off an NVA soldier sometime in the late 60s as he was told) along with a number of other things.

So, it looks like it spent time in a hole in a jungle probably because it did.

That's actually pretty snazzy, esque. Nice job!

The wood on mine is pretty ho-hum, so sadly I will not be posting any pics.

This Norinco SKS is the first rifle I ever bought myself back in 1993. I still have it.

The only mods it has is a refinished stock, butt stock extension, a slight amount of trigger work, and a Mojo rear sight. I'm highly likely going to remove the Mojo and reinstall the standard issue rear sight.

Ar180shooter:
That's superb shooting with the original iron sights.

Have you tried an SKS which has the fully-adjust. Tech Sights (TS 200)? This improved shooting with my standard Norinco is worth much more than the sight actually cost.

Do any of the new stocks retain the bayonet?

To try and answer one of the OP's questions, many of the aftermarket plastic stocks are cut for the spike bayonet. The Tapco "Tactical" stock is available for no bayonet, spike, or blade depending on the model ordered.

That can be part of its charm, post away!

My very fine 1958 Romanian:

Romanians seem to be rather uncommon, despite being some of the highest-quality. I think the main problem is it's hard to find them with good wood. This one's a beauty, and was someone's safe queen for quite some time.

Sorry that my pic has my Saiga in it, but it's an older shot.

From top to to bottom:
Saiga
1955-56 Ex DDR Russian (Refurb with all matching parts)
Factory 636 Chinese SKS with pinned barrel

Iffy pick of pops norinco sks , I scoped it for Christmas for him. I always thought it was a decent looking gun. With the scope she will hold a bit over an inch at 's 50 with almost any surplus ammo. At a hundred it gets ammo picky. With brown bear it'll hold down right at 2.5" off the bench, Not to shabby. The scoping job may look a bit iffy but she's been bumped around for 8 months now and has held it's zero for a few hundred rounds.

What kind of trigger pull you guys have on your sks's? I used my trusty fishing scale a while back and test it, not the most scientific method but hey it's what I got.
I was a bit shocked when it came in a smidge under 6lbs, once you got through the forever creep.
